🎥 Ripley’s Recall Journey! 🎥

Had a blast working with Ripley during today’s Day Train session, focusing on one of the trickiest skills—Recall! 🐕 Ripley’s been facing some challenges, especially when there are those oh-so-tempting distractions around. I call those higher value competing motivators.

So, what’s the deal with "higher-value competing motivators"? 🤔 These are the things that can make your dog’s ears stop working—like other dogs, squirrels, or that super interesting smell on the ground. How do you compete with that? 🤷‍♀️ Competing with higher-value motivators involves a mix of strategy, consistency, & making yourself the most rewarding option for your dog. Here are a few key techniques:

1. Start with Strong Foundations: Begin Recall training in a low-distraction environment where your dog is more likely to succeed. Gradually increase the difficulty as they improve.

2. Use High-Value Rewards: When your dog responds to a Recall, reward them with something they absolutely love—this could be a favorite treat, a fun toy, or lots of enthusiastic praise. The key is to make coming back to you more rewarding than whatever else they were interested in.

3. Incorporate Games: Turn Recall into a fun game! Practice “hide and seek” or play “tag” with your dog. This not only makes the process enjoyable but also strengthens their desire to return to you.

4. Practice in Various Environments: Dogs need to generalize their learning, so practice Recall in different settings—gradually increasing the level of distractions. This helps them learn that coming to you is always the best choice, no matter where they are or what’s happening around them.

5. Be Consistent & Patient: Training takes time, especially when competing with high-value distractions. Stay consistent, & don't get discouraged if progress is slow. Celebrate the small wins & keep building from there.

6. Manage Expectations: In particularly challenging situations, like a busy dog park or a wildlife-filled area, understand that your dog might struggle. In these cases, ALWAYS use a long line for safety & gradually build up their Recall reliability.

7. Set Your Dog Up For Success: Always make sure you are able to follow through or recover when your dog gets off track or gets distracted - using a long line can help you do that. I recommend about 15 feet to start. Never call your dog more than 2-3 times - after you've tried calling them 2 or 3 times, use that long line & reel your dog in, praise them, release, repeat.

By making yourself the ultimate reward and practicing regularly, you’ll help your dog overcome those tempting distractions!🌟

**Pro Tip:** Remember, when they come back, celebrate like they just won the lottery! 🎉

Check out Ripley’s progress in these clips—proof that with a little patience & consistency, your dog can master the art of coming when called!

Meet Mr. Riggins

Just wrapped up an assessment with Riggins, a Golden Retriever with a lot of heart but some challenges on the leash. He tends to get reactive as soon as it goes on, which, in this case, is a sign that he's lacking coping skills. We've crafted a plan to help him gain confidence & learn how to handle those situations better. I'm excited to see how the next few weeks unfold for this handsome boy!

🌳 The Healing Power of Nature Walks with Your Dog 🌿

There's something truly magical about walking through nature with your dog by your side. It's not just a walk—it's a shared journey that nourishes both body & soul. Here’s why these moments matter:

1. Mindful Connection 🤍: In the quiet of the woods or the open fields, distractions fade away, & you’re left with the pure joy of being together. Living in the moment. Every scent your dog discovers & every step you take becomes a memory woven into the fabric of your bond.

2. Emotional Balance 🌼: Nature has a way of calming our worries, & it does the same for our dogs. The rustle of leaves, the chirping of birds—these small wonders ground us, easing anxiety & filling our hearts with peace.

3. A Shared Adventure 🐾: Every trail is a new adventure, full of discoveries waiting to be made. Your dog’s excitement is contagious, reminding you to see the world through fresh eyes & to cherish the simple things.

4. Building Trust 💫: Walking side by side in nature fosters a deeper trust. It’s in these moments of shared silence & exploration that you truly become a team, understanding each other without the need for words.

5. Joyful Freedom 🌻: Out in nature, your dog can be free—free to sniff, explore, & revel in the joy of being a dog. Even if you need to have them on a long line 😉 & in that freedom, they find happiness that’s impossible to replicate indoors.

So next time you step outside, take a moment to breathe in the beauty around you & savor these walks. They’re more than exercise—they’re a gift to you & your dog’s heart ❤️

📣 TONIGHT! 📣

☆ What are Group Socials? ☆
Group Social Class is kinda like dog daycare, EXCEPT, you stay with your dog & learn all about dog behaviour, how to read your dog, & other dogs' body language. Your dog gets to learn impulse control & practice their social skills in a controlled environment.

HOW IT WORKS:
**Please keep in mind that this is the short explanation of how a Group Social Class typically goes. Everything we do & why we do it always has a reason. Safety is always our number one priority.**

1. To start, we bring the energy down by walking some laps.

2. Two professional dog trainers pick 2 dogs (dogs they have matched, its not random) to socialize in the middle of the group while the rest of the group continues to walk around. We keep the group moving so there is no stagnant energy.

3. After socializing some dogs, it's time for a water break.

4. We do a few laps to balance out the pack.

5. We socialize the dogs for a 2nd time in the middle of the group again. Group keeps walking.

6. Time for a water break.

7. We do a few "cool down" laps to bring the energy down.

⚠️ Keep in mind, not every dog is social & THAT'S OK. This will NOT be for every dog.

WHEN ARE THEY?
Every Monday, 7-8pm, cost is $20 & you must register as there are only 10 spots available per class.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions 🤗

♡ Take A Lesson From Your Dog ♡

We cherish our dogs & treasure their presence in our lives. While we often concentrate on teaching them to be well-behaved & trained, have you ever paused to consider what they can teach us?

Dogs are extraordinary beings. Beyond their physical capabilities, their perspective on life is remarkable. Each dog is unique, yet they all share a common trait – they live in the moment.

Humor me. Reflect for a moment – when was the last time you truly "lived in the moment"? Life keeps us busy, constantly moving from one task to another, always planning ahead. But have you ever stopped to fully appreciate what you’re doing right now?

Take a lesson from your dog – embrace the present moment. Whatever you’re doing, let it fully resonate with you. Whether it’s running errands, lounging with a book, tidying up, or enjoying nature, find joy in it.

Our dogs don’t stress about future plans. They live joyfully in the here & now. This mindset can bring immense joy & positivity to our lives.

Sometimes, simply being present is enough. Like in the picture below, where the dogs & I are sitting in the mountains, watching the sunset. We’re not worrying about what comes next or what others think. We’re just being.

Next time you feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath & immerse yourself in the present moment.

Be like your dog 🐕

🌟 Share Your Moments! 🌟
We’d love to hear how your dog has inspired you to live in the moment. Share your stories or pictures in the comments below. Let’s celebrate the joy our dogs bring into our lives together 💗

🚨STOP BUYING SUBPAR PRODUCTS🚨

I've had many conversations about e-collar training recently, and I want to ensure everyone has the correct information. NOT ALL E-COLLARS ARE CREATED EQUAL!

If you find an e-collar under $200, it’s likely a poor-quality product, and I would NEVER recommend using it on your dog! A CHEAP PRICE OFTEN MEANS CHEAP QUALITY, and when it comes to your dog, QUALITY AND SAFETY SHOULD BE YOUR TOP PRIORITIES! While price isn't always indicative of quality, the BRAND you choose DOES MATTER!

Here are some low-quality red flags:

🚩INCONSISTENCY: The intensity of stimulation can vary even if set to a specific level. If your dog's working level is an 8, the actual stimulation can vary from 3 to 15, risking overcorrection or no effect when needed.

🚩NO FLEXIBILITY: Brands with only LOW, MED, and HIGH settings lack the ability to gradually adjust intensity. This means your dog might not feel it at all or get over corrected—neither of which is fair to your dog.

🚩DELAY: Some brands have up to a 30-second delay between pressing the button and your dog feeling the stimulation. Even a 5-second delay can be critical in emergencies, making this feature unacceptable.

🚩SHORT LIFESPAN: Low-quality models may only last a year. In contrast, my mini educator from E-Collar Technologies has lasted over 5.5 years and is still going strong.

E-Collars themselves are NOT the issue! Proper knowledge about these communication tools and choosing the right brand is KEY! As a trainer, I continually educate myself on the best tools and techniques to help my clients. FULL STOP.

DO NOT BUY AN E-COLLAR ON SALE FOR $50 BECAUSE IT “SEEMS LIKE A GOOD DEAL.” You could harm your dog without proper knowledge and use.

Consult a responsible, ethical trainer to learn how these tools can enhance your training and relationship with your dog! I’m happy to help! Additionally, Marc Goldberg's book "The Art of Training Your Dog" offers excellent information on the safe and humane use of these devices, along with a step-by-step lesson plan. Bethany from Walking Dog Training also has fantastic YouTube videos about e-collar training.

For the record, I exclusively use E-Collar Technologies for Yama. They are the best, and we are a dealer for them!

Please share this post to spread awareness. Thank you!
