Say cheese!

Meet Molly, the 6-year-old Pug who loves to show off those pearly whites! Molly’s grin is a guaranteed mood booster (and it so happens that we're always smiling with her!)

So Molly has teeth for days, but she puts them to good use. This girl LOVES treats! if there was a treat-catching championship Molly would undoubtedly be a top contender. When she hears the crinkle of a snack bag, she's front and center, ready to chow down!

However, if there's one thing Molly prioritizes over everything else, it's playtime! She was born to play! Whether she's darting after her toys or engaging in games of tug-of-war, Molly's takes playtime seriously and gives it her all.

If you're ready for Molly, Molly is ready for you! Visit www.toronto.ca/adoptapet for more information about her or call our East Region shelter at 416-338-PAWS (7297)

Please meet Mister Ned!
Ned is a 4-year-old Domestic Shorthair who is very ready for his forever family!

Ned's day revolves around a trifecta of delights. First on his agenda: head pats. Ned knows exactly how to steal affection from even the most stoic of humans. Bonus points if you can find that magical spot behind his ears that makes Ned doze right off to sleep!

Next up: play time. Ned’s a ninja in fur. He’s mastered the art of toy ambush, pouncing on feather wands and jingling balls. He’s currently working on his toy mouse catching, but it won’t be long before he masters that too. Don't be surprised if you find yourself mesmerized by his lively and playful personality!

Last but certainly not least: TREATS!! Ned has a sophisticated palate when it comes to snacks, preferring gourmet bites that intrigue his taste buds and keep him purring for more! Don’t be fooled by his puppy eyes; Ned will use his cuteness to lure in more treats than he can handle! For Ned, though, we’d give him all the treats his heart desires and more.

If you’re interested in giving Ned the home he deserves, please visit www.toronto.ca/adoptapet for more information about him or call the North Region shelter at 416-338-PAWS (7287)

Introducing our toast troupe!

These American Bulldog littermates are just 14 weeks old and are absolute cutie pies. Each pup is unique, but it's hard to keep track of who's who when they're all smothering you with kisses. So we've given them some "toast aliases" to help keep track of which puppy is which!

Sophie and Matilda are our pair of white bread slices that accidentally got a few tan spots from the toaster—spotty but still VERY cute! They are social butterflies who are always up to meet new people and play outside with company! When they’re not out chasing after all the toys their little mouths can get ahold of, they are leaping about, looking for any attention they can get!

Ronnie's warm-brown coat looks like perfectly toasted whole wheat - just out of a breakfast commercial! Ronnie has a gentle soul and loves all attention! He’s a lap dog at heart; sit down, and he’ll come running right to you to snuggle in your lap!

Together, this breakfast club brings its own toasty, spotty, or slightly burnt charm to the morning chaos! If you’re interested in adopting a pup visit www.toronto.ca/adoptapet or call our North Region shelter at 416-338-PAWS (7287) to start the adoption process.

Going up?

Elevator etiquette is a matter of politeness for us, but with our dogs, it can be a matter of safety. When using elevators with your dog, it's important to pay attention and follow proper etiquette to ensure an easy and respectful experience for everyone involved! Here are a few tips to keep in mind when riding an elevator with your dog:

• Give some space! If the elevator is busy, it may be best to wait for the next one. This makes the elevator ride less stressful for your dog and in turn, makes it more comfortable for all riders.

• Avoid other dogs. If there's already a dog in the elevator, wait for the next one. The dogs may react to one another and there's little room to separate them in an elevator.

• Keep your dog close! If your dog is small enough, it's good practice to pick them up when entering an elevator. Otherwise, standing in front of your dog and blocking the path between them and other riders can help keep them calm.

• Shorten the leash. Keeping the leash short ensures that your dog stays close to you, minimizing the risk of them wandering or getting tangled. Remember to keep your dog by your side when waiting and boarding the elevator!

• Keep them focused! Keeping your dogs attention encourages calm behavior. A treat or favorite toy can keep their focus on you, and help reduce anxiety or excitement.

• Give room for people to exit. When waiting for an elevator, keep your dog away from the doors so there is space for everyone to exit. When all is clear, keep your dog close when boarding the elevator.

Help keep all shared spaces safe and respectful for the well-being of both humans and our furry companions!

Today, we bring you the BEST boy ever!!

Meet Oliver, a 4-year-old German Shepherd dog who loves people, dogs, and many cuddles!

This good boy does doggy training like no other! With manners so refined, he sips his water from a crystal bowl and insists on pinkies out for treat time! Oliver’s impeccable training includes speaking a little English; he’s able to understand many commands, including “no” and “leave it,” with impressive clarity!

To back up how amazing we think Oliver is, his foster has also had many great things to say about him! From the wise words of his foster, “sweet and loving Oliver, although an energetic boy who gets the zoomies, has been very good when needing to calm down!” Staff have even described Oliver as the CUTEST snuggler who loves to cuddle up to anyone (how is this boy not adopted?!?!)

If you’re interested in our Oli boy, visit www.toronto.ca/adoptapet to learn more about Oliver, or call our West Region shelter at 416-338-PAWS (7287) to start the adoption process!

18/06/2024

This week is forecast to be very hot in Toronto. When thinking of ways to beat the heat, don’t forget about your pets! Cats and dogs do not regulate body temperature the same way people do, and keeping cool in high temperatures can be challenging – especially young, old, overweight or short-muzzled pets, who are at the highest risk of overheating.

We have some tips on keeping your pets safe and cool (including some you’ve probably didn’t know!)

1) Limit exercise on hot days. Just like you, your pets don’t want to go jogging in the scorching heat! Adjust the intensity and duration of walks depending on the temperature, and try to limit exercise to early mornings or evening hours when the sunshine is not as direct. Avoid walking on asphalt on hot days, as it can become superheated and easily burn your pet's paws. If it’s too hot to hold the back of your hand on the asphalt for more than 10 seconds, it’s too hot for your pets! If you must walk on asphalt, consider putting "booties" on your pet for protection.

2) Don't forget to take breaks. When outside, sit in a cool, shaded area. Tree shade is ideal, as it does not obstruct airflow. Indoors, ensure your pet can relax away from the heat. Cats and dogs regulate heat different than humans, and fans alone do not cool them effectively.

3) Hydration is key! Staying hydrated helps combat overheating, so ensure your pets can access lots of cold, fresh water. Add ice cubes or change their water regularly to keep their water bowl cool. When going outside, bring a water bowl with you so your pet can have a drink!

4) NEVER leave your pets in a parked car. It doesn't matter if the windows are cracked or if it's only for a short period of time. The temperature inside a vehicle can quickly rise to deadly levels. Shade offers little protection on a hot day and will not keep your car cool. If you're going somewhere where you'd need to lock your pet in the car, leave them at home instead!

If you see a dog unattended in a parked car, call 311 and stand by the car until help arrives. If a dog appears to be in distress, call 911.

Pet licensing is part of being a responsible pet owner and is required annually in Toronto.
Here’s why it’s important:
🐾 It helps your pet and many others make it home safely.
🐾 100% of the funds support local animal shelters.
🐾 Local animals in need get the care (and hope for a furever home) they deserve when shelter space is opened up due to more identifiable and licensed pets.

Helloooooo Dolly!

Meet Dolly, the 2-year-1-month old German Shepherd/Lab mix! Being the queen of charm, it’s not hard for Dolly to impress everyone that comes across her. With her heart on her sleeve and SO much joy and sweetness to share, Dolly is no stranger to the endless rubs and attention she gets from humans (hopefully the fame doesn’t get to her head!)

Dolly LOVES the outdoors and is practically powered by pure enthusiasm, making her the ultimate buddy for outdoor adventures and games. She’s a sun lover who will pounce on every opportunity to go outside and play on the grass. If you’re active like Dolly, then she's the perfect companion for outdoor adventures, big and small!

Dolly’s obedience skills are still trying to find their rhythm.... She approaches leash walking like a kid in a candy store, and her understanding of “no jumping” may need some work! But with a little patience, a dash of consistency, and enough treats to make her think she's hit the jackpot, we're confident she'll have the best manners and be an even more amazing friend!

Dolly can’t wait to find her forever home, where she'll be adored for her sweet and lively personality. Visit www.toronto.ca/adoptapet to learn more about Dolly, or call our North Region shelter at 416-338-PAWS (7287) to start the adoption process!

One of the great things about Toronto is that so many of us call it home. Not just people, but our wild neighbours too!

Toronto is teeming with fascinating urban wildlife species. When you spot one of these creatures in the wild, our first thought is often to pull out our phone or camera and capture the moment with a photo. However, doing so can come at a cost to the animals and there is no time better than now to discuss this since there are so many wild babies being reared in dens and ecosystems we can’t even see. It's important to ask ourselves: How can I take these photos respectfully?

If you'd like to take a photo of some of Toronto's amazing animals, we have some suggestions on how to do so responsibly:

• Do not bait, feed or lure wild animals with sounds or scents. Feeding wildlife can change their natural behaviour, and sounds and scents can distract them from feeding or threats.

• Stay on designated trails to protect animals' homes and the natural environment.

• Stay at least 30 meters away from wildlife to give them the space they need to live safely. Never chase, surprise or crowd wild animals.

• Never approach animals that are feeding, at a den or nest, or with their mate or offspring. They may become defensive or abandon their young.

• Do not use a flash as it may cause stress to the animals.

• Use discretion when sharing the location of wildlife. It can lead to an overwhelming number of visitors.

These tips can keep our wildlife safe and allow you to get the best shot without disrupting their environment! For more information on ethical wildlife photography, visit our page at toronto.ca/ethical-wildlife-photography/

Happy Pride Month!! 🏳️‍🌈

Just in time for June, meet Caesar and Robert: a bonded pair of male cats who may just be love purrsonified! These guys have a bond that's one for the books. They do just about everything together, including their favorite activity... holding paws!! 🥹

Caesar (the 8-month-old Black cat) and Robert (the 5-month-old) live their life as a lovely couple; from chasing toys, exploring the world around them, or meeting new friends, it's all done as a pair! These two have that youthful kitten energy and an adventurous spirit that gets them into all kinds of antics. BUT no matter how crazy their day gets, it always ends the same; Caesar and Robert curled-up together, sleeping side by side, and dreaming (obviously about each other!).

These two obviously have love for each other in spades, but their affection doesn't end there! Caesar and Robert ADORE people - including you! These guys want nothing more than to entrance you with a flash of their sparkling eyes, a rub against your leg, and then... hop in your lap for a cozy cuddle session. What's better than one snuggly kitty? TWO snuggly kitties!

Are you looking to fill your home with double the love? Then visit www.toronto.ca/adoptapet to learn more about Caesar and Robert, or call our East Region shelter at 416-338-PAWS (7287) to start the adoption process!

You know the drill! It's Friday and it's time to relax. Let's kick back, chill out and unwind with a feel-good adoption success story!

Today's adoption story features Jelly Roll - one of the pups from our "Good Dogs, Bad Names" adoption campaign! We reached out to Jelly Roll's family to see how she's settling in. Here's what they had to say!

"Jelly Roll is the best dog we could have ever imagined. She was in the window the day we walked into the shelter and we wholeheartedly believe that she chose us.

Jelly loves meeting new people and pups, has been so confident on her walks around downtown, and enjoys a nice sunny stroll on the boardwalk. She also loves her naps and cuddles! Every day since we’ve had her, she welcomes us home with a tail wag so enthusiastic, that her butt wobbles usually make her fall on the floor and roll over! And of course, because of that, we decided to keep her name. She suits it so well!!

She is now a known favourite in our neighbourhood, and everyone who knows her leaves with a smile. Her joy is infectious! We couldn’t imagine our life without Jelly Roll."

Thank you so much to Jelly Roll's family for giving her a loving home and sharing such a great update! Of course, if YOU want to give a pet a home and create your own success story, you can! Head to www.toronto.ca/adoptapet to see what adoptables we have on offer!

HE'S SOOO DREAMY!

We welcome to the stage: Chad Michael Murray! Don't get him confused with the handsome "bad boy" of "One Tree Hill" and "Gilmore Girls". While our 7-year-old Jack Russell Terrier mix is just as handsome, THIS Chad is exclusively a good boy.

Not to brag, but Chad is THE golden boy.
Looking for a dog who's chill? That's Chad!
Affectionate? That's Chad!
Friendly, sweet, and just so darn cute? Yep, that's Chad!
Chad Michael Murray is your go-to guy if you want someone whose idea of a wild Friday night is snuggling on the couch with a bowl of snacks and dog belly to pet.

However... try as we may, Chad hasn't been a big fan of the shelter. Despite his best efforts to act like a “tough” guy (he isn't fooling anyone) Chad has been a bit anxious during his stay. That said, with a cozy home and a loving family to give him belly rubs (and reassure him that the vacuum cleaner isn't out to get him) he'll settle right in!

So, if you are interested bringing home a STAR, visit www.toronto.ca/adoptapet to learn more about him or call our East Region shelter at (416) 338-PAWS (7297) to start the adoption process!

This warm weather calls for celebration! Here’s an early summer treat – it’s Georgia Peach!

Georgia Peach is a 5-year-old American Bulldog who’s an absolute basket full of sunshine. Just like the fruit itself, Georgia Peach is chalk-full of natural sweetness that just MELTS everyone around her. This princess Peach is gentle, friendly, and affectionate - making her a fan favorite here at the shelter!

To Georgia, nothing in this world tops a good game of fetch! Throw a ball and she takes off like a rocket - you'd think she was spring-loaded! Fetch is a lifestyle for Georgia; rain or shine, she's ready for you to toss a ball or two. While fetch may be her first love, those post-game belly rubs really do come close second. Georgia tumbles over to invite anyone to give her tummy some pets! What can we say? She's a girl who knows what she wants!

If you're peachy-keen on Georgia Peach, visit toronto.ca/adoptapet to learn more or call our North Region shelter at 416-338-PAWS (7287) to book a time to see her!

Here's a treat - it's Pistachio Delight!

Meet Miss Pistachio Delight, an 11-month-old German Shepard who's as sweet as her namesake! A big fan of other pups, Pistachio's social skills are second to none. She's a social butterfly through and through, making her a favorite with her canine peers at our shelter! She's a firm believer in the "more the merrier" when it comes to dogs (we can relate) so she's always up for a play-date or a park stroll where she can greet new friends!

When it comes to people, she's a bit more shy. BUT! Although she may need a little time to fully settle in new situations, it won't be long before she transforms from a hesitant house guest to the reigning queen of the castle! Once she's opened up and her confidence shines through, she'll show you how much excitement she can be!

So, if you're ready for a pup who will fill your days with love and adventure —Pistachio is your girl! Visit www.toronto.ca/adoptapet to learn more or call our North region shelter at 416-338-PAWS (7287) to book a time to come meet her!

Ready for adventure??

Everyday is an adventure with Nico! Nico is our spirited 5-month-old black Labrador Retriever puppy, and a super adventurous soul!
As our resident explorer, Nico is on the daring mission to soak up every bit of the world around him! His youthful energy and natural curiosity make him a busy little pup - he's always on the go and ready for the next big thing.

Nico likes to approach everything with an enthusiastic wag of his tail and a smile! His friendly nature means he never meets a stranger, only new friends waiting to play. In fact, he's so friendly that other dogs who are past their puppy days don't always have patience for him! However, that does not stop Nico - any new opportunity to play, he'll take tenfold!

Nico can also be a busy bee. With his energy and excitement, you'll never know what he’s thinking about or what his next move will be! One moment he's on a quest to fetch his favorite toy, and the next he’s off chasing a falling leaf. He’s a big lover of the outside and loves all the grass and toys he can play on and with! It’s all part of his charm, we assure you.

Like any other puppy, Nico likes to use his teeth and chew on things, but that will go away as he gets older with proper guidance! This shark is getting better but still has some time to go before he fully learns that his teeth are only needed for food!

If you are interested in this lively little guy, visit www.toronto.ca/adoptapet to learn more or contact our East Shelter at (416) 338-PAWS (7297) to book a meet and greet!

Meet the dynamic duo Hella and Thor!

There’s no other love like sibling love! Hella and Thor are white and brown tabby Domestic Shorthairs and are almost three years old! Like a package deal, Hella and Thor are set in place on staying together.

Our overly sweet Hella is a gentle and sensitive girl. She loves to purr and knead with her paws when given attention. When it comes to playtime, Hella approaches it with all the grace and finesse of a ballerina. While other cats might pounce and leap with wildness, Hella’s version of play is more akin to a refined tea party. She’s our princess.

On the other hand, Thor is slightly braver than his sister. When it comes to attention, Thor’s motto is “all eyes on me.” He’s not afraid to flaunt his affectionate side, shamelessly asking for pets and chin scratches whenever they’re up for grabs. When it’s playtime, Thor kicks it up a notch with his energy. He loves his toy mice and balls, which could keep him busy for a while. But don’t mistake his outgoing nature for a lack of gentleness; Thor’s got a heart of gold buried beneath that tough older brother act. Just like his sister, he’s a master of the gentle touch, with a knack for melting hearts faster than anything.

Hella’s finesse and Thor’s bravery complement each other perfectly, creating a purrfect balance of yin and yang. This brother and sister duo will for sure give you a taste of different worlds and personalities. So, if you’re lucky enough to have these two in your life, you’ve hit the jackpot—two for one feline charm and companionship that’s guaranteed to make your day just a bit brighter.

Interested? Check them out at toronto.ca/adoptapet or call our East shelter at 416-338-PAWS!

Back for another feature is our big friendly giant Danny DeVito!

Danny is a little over a year old and is a white Great Dane mix!
Unlike his human counterpart, this Danny DeVito doesn’t seek fame or fortune. Instead of strutting around on the Hollywood red carpet, his riches lie in the freedom to roam, the companionship of his loved ones, and the endless treats that he can attempt to get ahold of. He’s a humble guy with a heart almost as big as himself.

Danny is a VERY loving dog. He loves to interact and be around people but isn’t really a fan of other dogs. Let’s just say Danny’s social circle is about as exclusive as a VIP gathering at a movie premiere. Danny’s big on gratitude and appreciation. He loves to soak up the affection while giving his thanks by leaning on you calmly. Instead of showing off and being nuts, he’ll just sit there quietly and look at you with love and admiration.

One of Danny’s favorite things is going for walks. He’s not one for fancy events, but he loves to dress up and wear his leash proudly while on strolls. Just a simple leisurely adventure would make him happy. Danny is also a fan of naps. One of his favorite pastimes is curling up in a sunny spot while dreaming about humans and cuddles. Despite his love for naps, he always wakes up just in time for dinner, ready to eat wherever and whenever!

If you’re interested in this down to earth loving guy, visit our website toronto.ca/adoptapet to read all about Danny or reach out to our North Region shelter at (416) 338-PAWS (7297) to start the adoption process!

Meet our blue-eyed baby, Fozzy!
Fozzy is a unique rex-coated male rabbit with the cutest nose ever! This little furball may start off shy, but give him a minute, and he’ll be sleeping in your lap faster than you can say, ‘Carrots please!’ Fozzy is still getting accustomed to being handled but is slowly but surely warming up to it. And while he’s still trying to perfect his litter box skills, Fozzy’s got petting sessions down to an art form.

Fozzy may be a dog at heart. He loves ear and nose rubs and sometimes even drools when you rub the right spot. During play time, Fozzy loves to explore and play around with his toys; he also likes large areas to roam around. Fozzy also LOVES to sniff. He’s a curious soul with a nose for adventure, so he will, once accustomed, leap up to you and sniff around.

May we add that he’s also a health enthusiast? Fozzy has taken a keen liking to fresh greens like lettuce and parsley, as well as hay wrapped up in toilet paper tubes. (Save your toilet paper tubes!!). And for a sweet treat, in very small portions, he likes to dabble in the tiniest amount of banana, blueberry, or strawberry — just a dash to satisfy his sophisticated palette!

Visit toronto.ca/adoptapet to read all about Fozzy or call our North Region shelter at (416) 338-PAWS (7297) to start the adoption process!

Meet Duke, our wise and wonderful senior dog!

Duke is a 7-year-old black Labrador Retriever/German Shepherd dog with the cutest face ever!

Duke is the ultimate companion in waiting. Despite his past as a stray, this dog continuously proves his loyalty like no other. As the saying goes, ‘A dog is a man’s best friend,’ and Duke is here to prove it true! With very little concern for other dogs or strangers, Duke would rather take ALL the scratches and lovin’ for himself.

Duke LOVES toys, especially the chewy kind. If chew toys had only one fan in the world, it would be Duke. With a playful spirit, this dog can entertain himself with chew toys for days. From balls to rubber bones, every chew toy in sight is Dukes. He does get a little territorial and grumbly when it comes to sharing his toys, but will eventually trade you for a better one. Loyalty to his chew toys too!?! I think so. That said, a home without kids would suit Duke best.

Did someone say walk? Duke will never say no to a trip outside. Whether it be the park, a trail, or just around the block, Duke will happily take in the sun and breeze with no complaints.

Visit toronto.ca/adoptapet to read all about the amazing Duke, or call our West shelter at (416) 338-PAWS (7297) to meet Duke today and discover the joy of sharing in his world of love and loyalty.

YOU know and WE know there's only one way to kick off a long weekend... with a feel-good adoption story!

Meet Bert aka Bertie, a 10-year-old Beagle and former resident of our North shelter. Bertie was a staff favorite with his gentle and friendly demeanor, and while we loved seeing his smiling face, we wanted him to find a forever home where he could relax and retire. Thankfully, it wasn't long before he found it! Bertie's been with his new family for about 6-months-now, and they sent us a lovely update that we just had to share:

"Just wanted to share an update on our little Bertie boy :) He’s been with my sister and I for 6 months now and we absolutely adore him. He has the sweetest, purest and most loving soul. He is the happiest dog I have ever met, and his little bum never stops wiggling. He is an early riser, and loves to wake us up with a gentle paw slap to the face and a lick directly on the mouth.

Bertie LOVES to walk! He has tons of energy and could walk and play all day long. We take him for lots of long walks every day, and we visit the dog park a lot. He plays really well with other dogs. He also loves snuggles and peanut butter, so he gets both of those as well. He has learned how to sit, stay and high five. Bertie’s love helped us heal while we were mourning the loss of our childhood dog Timmy.

We are really grateful for him❤️"

Thanks to Bertie's family for the beautiful update! We're so happy that Bertie has found a wonderful home. If you'd like to make your own adoption success story, head to www.toronto.ca/adoptapet to see all of the animals looking for their new families!
