So, I'm going to start this with 'you might need a tissue' and it's a long one.

For anyone who doesn't know, over the past couple years jess and I have lost our 2 foundation Golden's, Otis and Wilma. They were absolutely everything for us, Riverbend wouldn't even be a thing without them.

The generations of amazing dogs that came from them brings a tear to my eye, and the amazing families who's lives have been touched by Riverbend is amazing. You don't hear alot from me, but know that I love you all and thank you so much for raising amazing dogs, I really do feel blessed.

One year, when Otis was just a young stud, we decided to drive down to Florida (cuz, why not?!) We used a TomTom GPS and a 'Dog friendly Florida' book to travel most of the state. Well, we ended up in Venice, FL and amazing dog beaches. There we met Kimberley Blandina Corby , an AMAZING dog momma who might've loved Golden's more than us (maybe). Over the years, Kim acquired 4 Riverbend Golden's (oldest being Fansee who is 13 now I believe) and they love the LIFE.

So when Wilma passed last summer, I wanted to do something special for her and Otis. I decided to take a trip back to Venice FL and spread some of both their ashes at that same beach we first met our Florida Family. I wanted a part of them to be there and able to play with all the dogs there for the rest of eternity.

I just got back and I am sooo happy that I did.
Oh yeah, and i got a tattoo portrait of a Wilma on my left calf, to match the Otis portrait on my right calf (shout out to ms. London who did both tattoos 12 years apart)

Happy 2 weeks to our Reindeer Gang & St.Nick 🦌🎅❤️ - puppies are thriving. They will be starting litter training this week and will start their transition to kibble very soon.

Better late than never - right?
Finally I would like to introduce you to our St Nick & his Reindeer litter 🦌🎅❤️.... Howie & Maryjane are the proud parents, born in the early morning of November 24th. Unfortunately my scale is still yet to arrive, but all are gaining for sure! Chunky monkeys.

To spay or not to spay? Part 6: Other (non-mammary) cancer risks. A few papers published around 2013 began demonstrating an unexpected finding that neutered/spayed dogs had a higher risk of some cancers compared to intact dogs, suggesting that reproductive hormones lowered the chance of getting some cancers. One paper found an increased risk in neutered/spayed Viszlas for hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, and mast cell tumors. Another paper found those same cancers in spayed Golden Retriever females were 2-3x more likely than in intact females, regardless of the age of spay. That study also found the risk in males was high regardless of neutering status. Studies looking at those same cancers in GSDs and Labrador Retrievers did not find any correlation between cancer incidence and spay/neuter status (incidence was low in both groups). A study currently under review reports data showing that Boxers spayed/neutered before 2 years old have a much higher chance of getting those same cancers. This same study did NOT find a difference in Rottweilers, but separate studies show an increased risk of a different cancer, osteosarcoma, with neutering/spaying in this and other large or giant breeds. These studies found a low incidence of these cancers in most small breeds, regardless of neuter/spay status. Most breeds have not been studied sufficiently.
So, with regard to cancers alone, we have established (see Part 5 of this series) that the benefit of early spay on reducing mammary cancer has been grossly exaggerated and probably is very low in most breeds. The risk of contracting some very serious cancers (hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, mast cell tumor, and osteosarcoma) rises significantly with spaying/neutering in some breeds, and sometimes is age-specific. If you have one of those breeds, you also have to ask yourself which cancer would be worse to get: mammary or any of the others mentioned. The answer is hands down that mammary cancer would be the better cancer to get. While it can also be life-threatening, it is much easier to detect in the early stages, whereas the other cancers, being internal, are nearly always detected only in late stages. More considerations to come…
