Did you know only 5 to 10% of dogs show symptoms of lyme disease? But they can still have systemic issues from it!

Lyme disease is carried and transmitted by the black legged tick (the deer tick). As many people know, our area is endemic for ticks and they can be found everywhere - not just near lakes or trails. This is why our team highly recommends testing every year, and it's included in our heartworm test so it's easy.

A symptomatic dog can show signs of lameness, joint swelling, fever, loss of appetite or lethargy. An asymptomatic dog won't show symptoms, but it could still have an effect on their kidneys. The disease can impact the filtration of the kidneys and, if left untreated, can escalate into kidney disease/failure. In extreme cases, neurological and cardiac issues can arise.

An important reminder - if your dog can get lyme, you can too. Lyme disease is treatable in dogs, but it's more difficult to manage it in humans. Keep your whole family safe by doing tick checks and putting any furry family members on prevention.

We're always here to help if you have any questions or concerns! You can contact our team at 519-426-0111 or [email protected]

Heartworm season starts June 1st!

Do you know what transmits heartworm disease? It's the common mosquito! One feeding from a mosquito carrying heartworm disease can pass it on to your pet.

Prevention against heartworm disease is as easy as a monthly chew/tablet or a topical (liquid) application. Many of our heartworm preventions also include tick and flea prevention - making it even easier to protect your pet.
