We are looking to borrow an RV, trailer, or camper, for the summer. If you have one to loan please let us know! It would be for a couple more volunteers coming in for summer, will be well looked after, not going anywhere on the road, will just be parked in our yard. We are by Sundre, Alberta, so anywhere around Calgary or Red Deer for pick up would be great. Thank you if you can help!

Orion arrived in Feb, 2024, along with Andromeda and Lyra. He is a bay roan c**t born in 2023 and was completely wild when he arrived. He was underweight and infested with ticks. He's now doing very well and will start learning haltering, etc, soon. He has an indent on one side of his face below his eye, so he must have suffered some trauma as a foal. It doesn't affect him in any way and gives him character! He may be from some old bucking stock line but that has no bearing on his future.
Orion is available for sponsorship please see our website for more details- https://www.bearvalleyab.org/sponsor-one-of-our-residents.html

We're back to hoof trimming again, like clockwork every 2 months (except tipping table which is twice a year). We did 42 horse yesterday and the day before, and have another 30 or so to do tomorrow and the day after. We're taking a well earned break today, which is just as well because, after 2 days of beautiful weather, it is cold out!
Bliss, the little unhandled filly that came in 2 weeks ago, had her first trim too! She really needed it!

We opened up another pasture for the one herd yesterday as the grass it still coming up and a bit short where they were. I gave them a yell and they came running!
Biscuit (in the front) limps because he sustained a serious foot injury last year. He recovered well after months of intense care but still favours it a bit. Obviously it doesn't slow him down much as he's in the lead!
The big black horse bringing up the rear is Elmo the wildie. He came in as a 2 year old from a cull, was adopted out and then came back in 2014. He's now 17 years old!

What does being a good horse-person mean to you? ❤️🐎

What does being a good horse-person mean to you? ❤️🐎

We read the books… take the lessons… enter the shows… build up our hopes and dreams… sometimes winning, sometimes crying all the way home. We watch the videos… go to the clinics… saddle up in all weather… in search of higher horsemanship. This is fine, this is what we human beings do when we want so badly to improve.

But to me, all these notions about learning more and doing the right thing, about holding ourselves to higher standards, are just so much stuff.

To me, being a good horse(wo)man is in knowing when it is time to lay down our swords. We vet... we treat... we maintain... we do due diligence... all the while knowing that one day, we will have done all that we can.

There will be only one thing left to do, if we are to live in love and kindness.

Horsemanship comes in many guises but much of it is smoke and mirrors. The real thing is knowing and having the courage to say, “Enough.” Being a good horse(wo)man is holding ourselves to bravery.

These hard days are ahead of all of us who love and care for old campaigners... and tragically, sometimes, those who are still young or in the prime of life. These horses remind us of the times we were more than we ever imagined we could be. We look in their eyes and are humbled by all the days we’ve let them down. Still, they’ve held fast to our secrets.

We put our hands on their necks and wish like heck we were more worthy.

Horsemanship, real horsemanship, is stepping up and embracing everything about that last day. It is the one final act of loving our horses with all the fierceness that they deserve.

Moving horses came to an unexpected halt today - thank goodness no one was hurt and we weren't on the road when the studs sheared off on both left tires of the trailer! We are diligent in maintaining the equipment but, sometimes, sh*t happens!
We hope repairs will be made by end of the week as we still have about 22 horses to move to pasture.

Duncan Macleod is feeling better and was well enough to get his teeth done and a second trim on his feet.
He is eating well, slowly putting weight on and was treated for lice.
In spite of his poor condition when he arrived and his front teeth being terrible, he’s not missing any molars but they were very sharp.

Our Story

We can’t do everything, but we can all do something. We make choices every day that have an effect on the world around us. Be kind. Be compassionate. Be gentle.

Everyone at Bear Valley Rescue is committed to caring for the animals here and providing them with the best life possible. It’s not always easy and sometimes there is sadness or anger, but we do what we do because we care. Join us by doing good and making the world a better place.

Bear Valley Rescue was started in 2003 by Mike and Kathy Bartley. Since then, so many wonderful animals and people have passed through our gates. We continue to do what we can to alleviate suffering and to provide a home for unwanted or abandoned horses and other animals. Please go to our website - bearvalleyab.org - to see the current residents of the Rescue.
