Yesterday we had the cow farrier out to trim. Yes, cows need regular farrier care as well! Unfortunately both Norman and Bear, the Holstein steers, are too big to fit in the chute, but everyone else got done. Thank you to Black's Cattle Hoof Trimming for coming out!
Here is Little Charlotte on the video 🐮

**URGENT PETITION closing NOVEMBER 10TH**
Animals in Canada are currently classed as property, which leaves them with very few rights and protections. By coming out in large numbers, we can show the Federal Government that Canadians want them to pass legislation that recognizes animals as the sentient beings they are. This would be a game-changer that would have a positive impact for animals in our country in so many ways. Scan the QR code in the image or click on/visit the link. Please ensure that you confirm your signature in the e-mail they send to complete the process and have your "vote" counted.”

‼️ RF Community. Here is where sharing is key. As Patti Dylan, a strong supporter in our RF community noted, there are less than 10,000 signatures and we have very little time. This is an INCREDIBLY TIME SENSITIvE opportunity to make change - sign, share, and encourage others to share. Thank you to everyone who is sharing already‼️

Calgary Humane Society is accepting applications for their free clinic in November.

We are now accepting applications for our upcoming Wellness & Vaccine Clinic! 💉

Now more than ever, offering no-cost vaccination clinics to vulnerable individuals with pets is essential to addressing a growing and urgent issue. In a time when the need for shelter space is rising, offering preventive care through vaccination is one of the most effective ways to keep pets out of shelters and with the people who love them 🏘️💕.

The clinic will take place on November 27th, from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM, at Westland Veterinary Hospital. Services will include wellness exams, vaccinations, deworming, and essential treatments. Applications are open until November 15th and can be found on our website: https://www.calgaryhumane.ca/community-clinic-application/

We had another Vet day yesterday:
Girly had her teeth done and, poor thing, she had a huge tooth at the bottom front, as the opposing tooth was missing. It’s all fixed now and she’s much more comfortable.

Dally got his teeth checked and everything was fine so he probably came in underweight because he was being sick or from not being fed properly. We thought he might be a cryptorchid but it turns out he was just very lonely, which gives him the green light to be in a herd to make friends and build some muscle with exercise. He’s very happy about that!
Dally also got his BVR freeze brand and is now part of the BVR alumni. The previous owner had been told that Dally is ‘bomb-proof’ and safe for children, but that’s definitely NOT the case. He is not broke to ride, or maybe just very, very green.

Teaka was checked as she’s had a snotty nose. It’s not in her chest or lungs so we’ll monitor her and start her on antibiotics if it doesn’t clear up on its own.
Sadly, we also had to euthanize one of our rabbits. He was the last of the ‘forestry’ rabbits. Someone had dumped 18 rabbits, including adults and babies, in the forestry reserve west of Sundre in 2018. A kind person found them and brought them to us. They were all spayed/neutered, a couple were adopted to new homes, and the rest stayed with us. This bunny had developed arthritis (not uncommon in older rabbits) and had been on meloxicam for a number on months, which kept him very comfortable and happy, but it was not a cure of course and we had to make the decision that was best for him in the end.

Girlfriend « Girly » is a pretty, chestnut mare who was surrendered this Sunday.
A month prior, she’d been taken in by a couple, who we have worked with before, from a neglect situation where an elderly person had a number of horses but was unable to care for them properly. The family contacted the couple who took in Girly and started her rehab.
She was extremely underweight and her hooves were in bad shape. After a month and some weight gain they transferred Girly into our care. We’ll get her teeth done and continue her refeeding. She is halterbroke and good for the farrier but we don’t know if she’s had any other training. We estimate Girly to be well into her 20’s.

We've added a new item to our amazon wish list - the large fortex rubber feed tubs. We use these for the senior horses for their mash, and we have a LOT of senior horses on mash! These tubs are durable but we do have quite a few that need replacing now.

Dally , a little Arab gelding, came to us in October, 2024. He was born about 2018 and was underweight and quite sick when we got him. He was abandoned at someone’s farm under questionable circumstances and that person contacted us asking if we could take him in. They had already treated him for a bad case of ringworm, and he had a very snotty nose and was coughing. Our vet diagnosed pleurisy (inflammation of the lining of the lungs behind the chest wall). After a month of antibiotics Dally has recovered and is gaining weight. His hooves are a bit deformed from neglect but should improve with proper farrier care.
He is supposed to be broke to ride but how much training he’s actually had is unclear. He can be difficult to catch and nervous, but is getting much better.
Now that he’s over his illness we will check his teeth, as he does seem to have some chewing issues, and we suspect he may be a cryptorchid, so we’ll check that out too.
Thank you to everyone who supports the work we do so that we can help horses like Dally!
Donations can be made through links on our website (Canada Helps and Paypal) or directly be email to [email protected]
Dally is not yet available for adoption.

Our Story

We can’t do everything, but we can all do something. We make choices every day that have an effect on the world around us. Be kind. Be compassionate. Be gentle.

Everyone at Bear Valley Rescue is committed to caring for the animals here and providing them with the best life possible. It’s not always easy and sometimes there is sadness or anger, but we do what we do because we care. Join us by doing good and making the world a better place.

Bear Valley Rescue was started in 2003 by Mike and Kathy Bartley. Since then, so many wonderful animals and people have passed through our gates. We continue to do what we can to alleviate suffering and to provide a home for unwanted or abandoned horses and other animals. Please go to our website - bearvalleyab.org - to see the current residents of the Rescue.
