Did you know that you can train your dog to take medication, or participate in handling such as grooming or veterinary exams or procedures?
This can benefit the owner/dog relationship, and be particularly helpful if your dog is afraid, or reacts strongly if this type of handling is attempted.
Here's Recess Day Trainer Leroy training with Malli, they're working towards taking oral medication from a syringe.

⚠️ It's that time of year again!⚠️
🌿Two plants to watch out for:
⭐Grass Awns/Speargrass
⭐Poison Hemlock (discernable by the purple coloring on the stem)

-Speargrass can wedge or poke into skin and eyes
-Poison Hemlock can be fatal if ingested by dogs or people and can cause severe skin irritation as well

If you ask your dog to sit or lie down, do they do it on the spot, or do they walk over to you? Most dogs would walk over, that's pretty standard as dogs tend to be very context specific!

With the warmer weather, the Recess Day Training dogs have been wanting less play and more training. I try to keep the training physically active, so here's Ella distance work. Her default previously has been to walk over and sit or lie down right at feet.

Sunny days are great for grooming outdoors!
Here's day trainer Leroy and Trainer Malli getting some loose floof out (and using Cooperative Care to do it!) on a recent Recess visit.

What a great graphic!

Okay, so I'm not an artist. But here I just a couple of the reasons that your dog may be displaying reactivity or factors that are having an input. Do you notice what isn't on there.... "because you're a bad dog owner".

A little perspective and encouragement from Trick Woofs

A little goes a long way when it comes to training. And if we want to make something sustainable, we need to start small.

One minute is enough, it’s achievable.

Use it for whatever is useful for your dog. A find it game, a 1 minute pause and cuddle. A one minute training session.

Make one minute just for you and your dog because that one minute of you focused on them, will make more of a difference than you might think.

And then anything more is a bonus.

To those tricky dogs 💜

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, the challenges we face with the ones we love.

Sometimes I think they are meant for us, the journey we are on. They help us grow patience, compassion, empathy. They make us look at ourselves more deeply.

Or maybe they are showing us a path we are destined to go down.
When we look this way at situations that challenge us it can sometimes help us make more sense of them.

Training Tip Tuesday, brought to you by this excellent graphic and words from Dogs Disclosed

ARE YOU WORTH COMING BACK TO?

There are many reasons why dogs don’t come back when you want them to. A dog’s genetics play a big role in this when an environment is far more stimulating and exciting and listening and coming back to you disappear into the background as genetic instinct takes over.

An exciting scent or seeing something to chase can all override a response to you.

Genetics aside, a common reason why dogs don’t come back when called is because it’s not a positive experience for them.

I often cringe when I watch owners trying to get their dogs to come to them when they call.
They call and call and get increasingly angry and frustrated as their dog keeps ignoring them.

When their dog eventually does come back, or has been chased and "captured” by their owner, they get screamed at, yanked about, smacked or punished in some way for taking so long and not listening. Why would a dog want to return to someone who does this to them!

Make coming back to you worth it by always making it a rewarding experience.

Have a little patience if it takes longer than you would like, let your dog finish what they’re doing before calling them, practice in different locations and environments and never reprimand or punish them for coming back.

There is never a guarantee of a perfect recall each and every time, but making it rewarding will greatly improve the rate of success.

Fact Friday!
The Clever Hans effect
It is used in psychology to describe when an animal or a person senses what someone wants them to do, even though they are not deliberately being given signals.
