What a great dog training tip!

The next time your dog barks at the window or the door do yourself a favor and don’t “bark”back. 😉

Instead try this!

Step one. Dog barks at window. Go close to the dog. Say the dogs name, when the dog turns to look, drop a tasty snack at your feet (cheese please!) and then walk away. Praise and move on with your day. Repeat this step until the dog is a pro and turns as soon as you approach.

Step two. Dog barks. Say the dogs name. Add in a no bark word (quiet, thank you, enough, shut up. Whatever you want.). Dog will turn because it’s been reinforced so much- yes! Great work. Drop the cheese.

Now you have a dog who can leave the window! The next step is getting the dog calm about seeing the trigger so there’s no barking in the first place! You can probably guess, but it involves cheese and a chair!

Sit in a chair. Watch out the window with the dog. Notice something- mention it! Look at that! Dog looks, drop the cheese. Dog looks at you for more cheese, drop the cheese. Look at that again! Drop more cheese. Multiple reps per day until the dog is spinning to look at you when the dog or person goes by. More cheese!

It sounds simple. Because it is. Reward what we want. Show the dog what we want. Don’t allow them to practice the bad stuff (super hard!) and be patient. Practice the good stuff a lot!

And then you won’t need to “bark” at your dog so much. 🙂
