It’s been a long heat wave in Edmonton and we’ve been receiving reports of cats being inactive puddles or even eating less. Here’s some tips to help your cats beat the heat:

- Fill a 750ml to 1L bottle mostly full with water and freeze. When frozen, place inside a sock and put it where the cats like to sleep.
- wet and wring out a tea towel or hand towel and place it in the freezer. If possible, drape it over something else in your freezer to make it freeze in a U shape. When frozen, take out and place over your cat's back. It will warm very quickly so have extra towels ready to go
- Playing with ice cubes: place a couple of ice cubes in the bath tub, a Rubbermaid tote or a cookie sheet (to contain the watery mess). The ice cubes can have tuna water or chicken bouillon in them for extra excitement. Let the cats bat and lick the ice cubes. You can put ice cubes in a water dish but it should be separate from their regular water - some cats are repelled by strange objects in their water bowl.

As always, if your cat is eating less than 1/2 of their normal amount or they stop eating, please contact your veterinarian.

Cats are better at home

In 2015, Dr Gayle McDonald and RVT Cathy Silver began a new chapter in veterinary medicine in the Edmonton area - a cat exclusive, mobile veterinary practice.

Cats receive less veterinary care than dogs: A 2017 study demonstrated that 58% of cat owners think their cat hates going to the veterinary clinic and 38% of cat owners felt stress about just thinking of taking their cat to a veterinary clinic.

Cats are less stressed at home and recover more quickly if there is any stress. Our cat friendly approach is to take more time with each cat and household, taking a thorough history, performing the examination at a pace, and in a place, the cat feels comfortable, and ensuring you have detailed information on how to care for your feline friend by the time we leave.

Gayle McDonald has been a veterinarian for 22 years. She graduated from WCVM in Saskatoon in 1998. She worked with a variety of species until devoting her focus to cats in 2007 when she purchased the Glenora Cat Clinic. She has two cats (Tang and Derp) at home who are spoiled rotten.
