🌟 Meet Susan: The Heart & Soul of STaRS! 🌟

Susan is our incredible Volunteer Coordinator at Southlands Therapeutic Riding Society (STaRS). She’s not only the backbone of our volunteer program—training, scheduling, and supporting all our amazing volunteers—but she also has an in-depth knowledge of each horse that helps make our program so special. 🐴

In addition to her day-to-day role, Susan has been the driving force behind her annual Christmas fundraiser for many years. Along with her friends, she handcrafts beautiful Christmas cards, bakes delicious shortbread, and even has former volunteers make cake pops—all of which are sold to raise funds. 100% of the proceeds go directly to our Bursary Fund, ensuring that riders in need can still participate in our programs. 🎄🍪🍰

Susan’s dedication and hard work have made a lasting impact on STaRS, and we are so grateful for everything she does! Without her passion and expertise, we simply couldn’t operate as we do today. Thank you, Susan, for being such an essential part of the STaRS family! 💙👏

Meet Marcia!
I have been volunteering with STaRS since the spring of 2013. My favourite horse is definitely Sprite! I am a retired recovery room nurse. Besides working with STaRS I like to swim, cross-country ski, and play my clarinet in various musical groups.

✨ VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT ✨

Meet June!
I’ve been volunteering with STARS for about 5 years. My favourite horse is a tough one but I’d have to say Sprite as he’s such a sweet boy. I love his little nickers when he sees me, as he knows I bring him treats. I also love how he wants to watch all the barn activity when grooming him.

As for me, half of the fun of being a volunteer is building relationships with the horses and seeing them learn to trust you. Seeing the riders learn to love their mounts is so gratifying!

Meet Mary!

“My name is Mary and I have always loved horses. When I retired from nursing I knew I wanted a volunteer job with people and horses. STARS fit the bill perfectly and 10 years later I still love meeting the clients and leading the horses. Austin is my favourite although I love them all! He is very steady and reliable, although he can be stubborn at times! I also help train Assistance Dogs for PADS (Pacific Assistance Dogs Society).
In my spare time, I sing in 2 choirs, ride as much as possible and travel. I love meeting other volunteers at Southlands Heritage Farm, it’s a very friendly and welcoming centre.”
