The Tarot/Flynt breeding is officially approved!

This breeding will happen Spring 2025 and the wait list is currently open!

Tarot is my foundation girl from Guardian Kennels 2020 Eleiko/Django litter, and Flynt is an F1 Tervuren cross from Wilderness Kennels' 2022 Mixal/Fortune litter, owned by Fyrefly Kennels.

Overall, we’re expecting strong, athletic puppies with more drive than your average Shiloh Shepherd. These puppies should be structurally correct with ample size, as both Flynt and Tarot have sizeable dogs behind them. Additionally, both dogs have good angulation, correct toplines and croups, as well as heads and ear size/placements. Temperament wise, the hope is that Tarot will stamp these puppies with her social butterfly personality and bring them more towards the ideal temperament of the Shiloh. However, with these pups being only 2 generations removed from a purebred Tervuren there is a probability that we may see persisting Terv-like traits such as aloofness and higher energy/drive/intensity, as well as higher prey drives.

All plush coats are expected and likely medium to dark shades of brown due to the dominance of Flynt’s genetics. Shaded sable (ay) and wolf sable (aw) will be the prevailing patterns with dual (at) and recessive black (a) as recessive traits. Tarot’s recessive white may be passed on to some puppies, however, no white puppies will be possible.

These puppies will be best suited for active households that are interested in advanced and continuing training and/or sports. This litter will be evaluated by an ISSA certified evaluator using our standard LER testing, as well as being evaluated by one or more Belgian Shepherd experts between 7.5 and 8 weeks of age. Due to the potential for retained Tervuren temperament traits, experience with herding and/or working dogs is preferred, and priority will be given to breeding and sports homes.

As this litter is a crucial part of the ISSA’s genetic diversity project, every puppy will need to complete full health and temperament testing and we are prioritizing homes that will keep their dog intact for breeding purposes. While all puppies will be listed as 25% Tervuren by pedigree, they will all be Embark tested to determine breed percentage through DNA prior to their placements. Because DNA inheritance isn’t as evenly distributed as pedigree, we are anticipating seeing variable percentages of Tervuren markers. These puppies will not be listed as purebred Shiloh Shepherds but they will be fully registered with the ISSA just the same as any purebred Shiloh Shepherd. As of today’s date, they will be able to compete in conformational events under Shiloh Shepherd breed clubs like the ISSA, with IABCA (all breed shows,) and are eligible to earn championships through the ISSA and IABCA.

This is an approved breeding, estimated for Spring 2025 and will be raised in Victoria, BC, Canada. If you’re interested in applying for this litter, please contact [email protected] directly.

Thank you to EHA Graphics for Breeders - design for breeders & stud owners for the litter ad!

We're finally home and (slightly) caught up from ISSA Nationals!

Tarot and I drove down to Washington this past weekend to participate in the 8th Annual ISSA Nationals, along with bonus dog Marley (Tarot/Arkan 2024.) Due to some late pulls, Marley wound up being the only puppy entered, which meant he had loads of space for his giant puppy antics!

Tarot didn't earn any points but was awarded Award of Merit in three shows. Sweet Cara (Tarot/Trooper 2023) also joined us in Washington and experienced her first time in a show ring. The Island girls also received a Versatility Award each for our ongoing participation in disc and scentwork.

As always, its such a joy spending time with like minded and passionate people. A big thank you to the organizers, judges, Greys Harbor staff, and all the participants and their friends/family who came out to support our little show! Until next year!

Last weekend Tarot, Tala, and I did our first SDDA trial of the year!

Tarot was entered into Advanced and passed her Interior and Containers with a 3rd place in each for Amatuer Stream! Sadly, we timed out in Exterior which was partly due to the temperature and partly my tall self unconsciously avoiding some low hanging stuff which discouraged Tarot from going into one area. We also need to work on Tarot's need to visit with people during searches 🤦‍♀️

Tala was entered into Games in the afternoon. We partnered with Border Terrier Ken Adams for a super search (we falsed on a distractor,) and then Q'd in both Aerials and Distance. Speed is not Tala's forte especially when she's getting too hot 😅

Overall I'm super proud of my girls and how they did! June trials are a bit iffy on whether it's too hot for them, so we'll for sure be taking the summer off of scent trials and pick up in the Fall. Big thanks to Meriadoc Dog Sports/Nosy Dogz for the great trial, thanks to judge Danielle Getzie for the fun searches, and all the volunteers and competitors who make trials run so smoothly and fun!

Tarot and I had a great weekend competing in the Updog Challenge Crossover Crown and Victoria Disc Dog Club's Sugar Rush Trial.

Tarot played very well despite me messing up in several games. I'm starting to see some lightbulb moments involving the cross over games and now we need to start doubling down on patterning with increased distance. I also need to remember to stick to our training and not try out brand new strategies at trials 😅

Saturday was the Crossover Crown, consisting of 7Up, Frizgility, and Funkey. Tarot placed 1st in Funkey, and lost a tie breaker so ended up with 3rd in 7up (the tie breaker was rock-paper-scissors, so that was 100% me 😅.) She took 3rd overall for the Novice division and won a coveted giant banana toy! She also placed 1st in Greedy despite us missing the sweet spot bonus, and 3rd in Freestyle Criteria.

Sunday was Sugar Rush and another 6 games. We got to play 4 Way Play Pairs with Kelsi for the first time and it was so nice seeing how well Tarot took to playing with a new person! Tarot managed to place 2nd in Boom (I still dislike this game) and had a PB in Frizgility!

A huge thank you to the Victoria Disc Dog Club, the organizers, volunteers, and competitors for yet another fun weekend flinging plastic for our dogs!

Our first disc trial of 2024 is complete!

Tarot and I headed up to Nanaimo for the Nanaimo Disc Dogs' 3rd Annual Quidditch Cup - a 3 day Harry Potter themed Updog Challenge event! Probably doing our first ever 3 day trail as our first trial of the year was a bit of a miscalculation, but we survived and my sprained ankle is (hopefully) no worse for wear!

Tarot and I also got bumped up to the Intermediate division this year, which means we are up against much more competitive teams. I am super happy with how T handled the weekend between the heat, the flying tents (including the one she was under at the time of flight,) our very obvious rusty skills, and the number of dogs in attendance. Nanaimo is always a super competitive venue and my girlie still (miraculously) managed to pull off two 3rd places in Freestyle Performance and Greedy (we do love Greedy.) We also had a comical mix of "interesting" runs and PBs or near to.

Looking forward to more disc this year (likely not July or August since we will both melt.) A big thank you to Nanaimo Disc Dogs for putting on another awesome event, and to all the judges, volunteers, and competitors for making a very long, very tiring weekend so positive. Oh, and to James for making the apparently tasty placement awards 🤷‍♀️

A couple of Tala's photos from the Nosework Nerds ' May 5th CWAGS trial. Tala wasn't eligible for any titles, however, she passed 3/4 Lvl 3 runs which means she only needs 3 more Qs to get her Lvl 3 ACE! We also did 2 runs of Dasher 4 as FEO, which we were a touch too slow to pass (and I can't entirely blame my sprained ankle.)

A couple of Tarot's photos from the Nosework Nerds ' May 5th CWAGS trial. While Tarot wasn't eligible for any titles, she passed all 8 of her runs between Lvl 1 and Lvl 2, which has her very close to a pair of ACE titles in each level.

This weekend is Nanaimo Disc Dogs' Quidditch Cup: 3 days of Updog Challenge. Day 1 had no love for us for placements as a freshly promoted Intermediate team, but Tarot and I (and my new sunburn) will be heading back tomorrow and Monday to give it another shot!

Its not about size, its about quantity (and value.)
-Dog

When training with puppies and young dogs, or just training new behaviours, the best method is to make it rewarding for them. Food is a fantastic (but not the only) thing dogs feel rewarded by, and in order to get them to really buy into doing a behaviour we need to reward them heavily and frequently. However, too much food is not a good thing especially for growing bodies, so what's the solution? Smaller treat sizes!

Dogs don't have the same concept of size as we humans do. The reward centers of their brains will ping so long as they get some flavour on their tongues. By using smaller sized treats, we can "jackpot" new behaviours, thus making the dog more inclined to offer the behaviour.

Smaller treat sizes also means you can introduce variable value rewards. Variable value rewards are important when the behaviour foundation has been laid and now you're working on proofing or reinforcing the behaviour. So you can have some high value treats (like cheese or hotdogs,) some medium value treats, and then low value treats (kibble, air dried food, low calorie foods) in your treat pouch and your dog will keep working in the hopes that you'll pull out one of those high value items he can smell. Another benefit of this is you actually end up going through treats slower if they're broken down into smaller training sizes, which means less money out of your pocket (aka its rewarding for humans!)

Here is a bit of my training treat prep with some medium and higher value treats. Tilted Barn single protein jerky style treats and The Butcher's Companion Sausage Bites (that I coincidentally discovered the label can be peeled off and applied to a ziploc baggie.) Everything thats been precut will usually go into the fridge or freezer to keep it from spoiling.

09/05/2024

The CDC has announced new rules regarding cross border transport of dogs (see below) which will cause changes with future litter plans and placements. As a Canadian based breeder, I do hope that the CDC will reconsider some of these stipulations and the negative effects they will have on ethical breeders and future owners, as well as rare breed populations and genetic diversity.

In the mean time and in anticipation these changes will be permanent, I will be updating my website and application form in the next few weeks to reflect these new regulations. Thank you for your understanding.

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

Use CDC’s Q&A tool (the CDC “DogBot”) to determine what rules apply to your dog: https://bit.ly/2rww2bq

Pacific Wild Kennels, with Wilderness Kennels, is pleased to announce the proposed breeding between Tarot and Flynt! This breeding is pending breed warden approval.

A brief summary of the Tervuren cross:
The ISSA chose the Belgian Tervuren due to the breed being one of the most distantly related shepherding breeds from the Shiloh Shepherd, which means the progeny of this cross will have much greater genetic diversity than breeds more closely related to Shilohs (such as the German Shepherd Dog or Berger Blanc Suisse aka White Swiss Shepherd.) Phenotypically, Tervurens share a lot of the ideal physical traits we like to see in Shilohs, including body proportions slightly longer than tall (9:10 ratio), strong front and rear quarters, and small high set ears. Tervurens are smaller than Shilohs, and generally have narrower muzzles, heads, and builds. They are also considered to be more intense and drivey than we like to see in our Shilohs, due to their close relation to Malinois, Laekenois, and Groendals(1). Likewise, the Tervuren helps maintain the herding instincts and traits that many value in the Shiloh Shepherd. All four of the subsequent F1 puppies showed an increase in genetic diversity from their purebred counterparts when sampled through BetterBred, while still maintaining or improving on desired physical Shiloh traits. As anticipated, we also saw much more Belgian temperament traits and mannerisms such as aloofness, higher intensity, and higher drives.

About Flynt:
Flynt is an F1 Tervuren from Wilderness Kennels’ Mixal/Fortune 2022 litter, bred as part of the ISSA’s genetic diversity and outcrossing project. Flynt exhibits traits more in line with his Tervuren ancestry than Shiloh ancestry – he is an aloof dog, preferring his family (human and dog) over being social. Flynt also exhibits more Tervuren style drives and intensity, which means he is performing well in multiple sports including racing (AOK9) and disc, but also has a stronger prey drive. In addition to being titled in sports, Flynt has also earned his breed Championship with the ISSA and has competed against and placed above purebred Shilohs in both ISSA and non-ISSA events. Structurally, the Terv brought a lot of much needed physical traits to the table with small, high set ears, good angulation front and back, and nice slightly longer than tall body proportions. Flynt’s dam (also from Guardian lines) added height, width, and density of structure and Flynt has this in spades.

About Tarot:
Tarot is a big, solid girl from Guardian Kennel’s Eleiko/Django 2020 litter. She is a social, outgoing dog with a wonderfully weird, quirky personality. She’s a medium drive dog and actively competes in scent detection and disc based sports, boasting titles and placements in both, as well as multiple conformation championships. Structurally, she has nice body proportions with being slightly longer than tall, heavy bone, broad muzzle and head, good ear set, and nicely assembled front and rear (though she could use more length in the foreleg.) She has successfully raised 9 puppies across two litters and has routinely produced nicely structured, playful, and confident puppies, and we will continue to collect health data on these puppies as they reach the appropriate ages.

What We’re Expecting:

Due to the potential for retained Tervuren temperament traits, these puppies will not be suitable for first time owners or as service dog prospects. Experience with herding and/or working dogs is preferred.

As this litter is a crucial part of the ISSA’s genetic diversity project, every puppy will be placed with the assumption that they will be bred and will need to complete full health and temperament testing. As of today’s date, they will be able to compete in conformational events organized by Shiloh Shepherd clubs such as the ISSA, and are eligible to earn championships through the ISSA.

This breeding is still pending ISSA breed warden approval. If approved, this breeding is estimated to happen Winter 2025 and will be raised in Victoria, BC, Canada. If you’re interested in applying for this litter, please contact [email protected] directly.

(1) In most of the world, Tervurens are considered a variety of Belgian Shepherd along with Malinois, Laekenois, and Groendal. It's very common to see litters of Belgian Shepherds that have a Malinois parent crossed with a Tervuren parent, and the puppies are registered according to their coat type and colour. In the United States, the AKC has required the four varieties to be separated into different breeds and it is less likely to see approved crossbreeding of varieties. However, DNA testing can still show ancestral variety mixing of the four varieties of Belgian Shepherd.
