Are you wilderness ready? Are you prepared for the unexpected when going out on a hike with your dog?

Knowing your environment, your skills and limitations (as well as your dog’s) and having the right first aid and safety equipment with you could mean the difference between being able to help yourself and having to call in search and rescue or worse, leaving your dog behind. And while search and rescue will come to your aid, they will not put people in danger to rescue a dog.

Do you know what to do if your dog is injured out on a hike? Are you confident that you could manage an injury and get your dog to safety in a timely manner? Do you have the right tools and knowledge?

Knowing how to avoid wildlife encounters, deal with injuries and keep your pet safe while out enjoying nature is an important responsibility to consider. Because for the most part, if something happens to your dog, you’re on your own until you can get them to a vet. This means that even when you’re at a park relatively close to a town, you may still have to deal with a pet emergency entirely on your own.

Keeping your dog safe on frozen water bodies is crucial during winter activities. Here are some important tips:

Check Ice Thickness: Ensure that the ice is thick enough to support both your dog and yourself. A minimum thickness of 4 inches is generally considered safe for walking, but thicker ice is better.

Avoid Unfamiliar Areas: Stick to known safe paths and avoid areas with running water beneath the ice, thin spots, or cracks.

Keep Your Dog on a Leash: This prevents them from running onto thin ice or moving too far away from you, especially if they try to chase after something.

Watch for Signs of Weakness: If your dog appears hesitant or nervous, do not force them onto the ice.

Keep an Eye on the Weather: Rising temperatures can weaken ice quickly. Be cautious and monitor conditions.

Have a Plan: Before heading out, familiarize yourself with what to do if your dog falls through the ice. Being prepared with rescue tools (like a sturdy rope) can be helpful.

Dry and Warm Your Dog After Exposure: If your dog does get wet, dry them off immediately and keep them warm to prevent hypothermia.

Avoid Eating Ice: Be cautious if your dog tries to eat snow or ice, as it could lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Watch for Signs of Cold Stress: Be alert for shivering, lethargy, or any signs of discomfort, and bring your dog indoors if they show these symptoms.

By taking these precautions, you can help ensure your dog enjoys the winter while staying safe around frozen water bodies! 🐶❄️

Worried about over vaccinating? Know your options

Does my dog need a titer test?

What is it? A titer test is a laboratory test used to measure the concentration of antibodies in the blood. It helps to determine the immune response to a specific pathogen, such as a virus or bacteria, by assessing how well the immune system has produced antibodies against it. Whether your dog should have a titer test depends on several factors, including their vaccination history, health status, and lifestyle. Here are some reasons why you might consider a titer test for your dog:

Vaccination Confirmation: If your dog is due for vaccinations and you want to check if they still have adequate levels of protection from past vaccinations.

Health Issues: If your dog has health concerns or a compromised immune system, a titer test can help determine if they need additional vaccinations.

Avoiding Over-Vaccination: Some pet owners prefer to avoid unnecessary vaccinations. A titer test can help ensure that your dog is only vaccinated if they truly need it.

Travel Requirements: If you plan to travel or board your dog, some places may require proof of immunity, which can be provided through a titer test.

Always consult your veterinarian to determine if a titer test is appropriate for your dog's specific situation and health needs.

If your dog was going to make a new years resolution what would it be? One of these or something else? Comment below!

Stop Barking at My Own Reflection: Seriously, that dog in the mirror needs to back off; it’s getting embarrassing!

Master the Art of Stealth: This year, I resolve to sneak treats without getting caught... although the wagging tail might give me away!

Become a Professional Napper: I will perfect my napping technique and elevate it to a fine art—right in the middle of the living room!

Less Zoomies in the House: I’ll try to limit my high-speed chases indoors… but no promises when the squirrel brigade shows up outside!

Only Steal Food Off the Counter When You’re Not Looking: I'll work on my stealth skills to avoid the “bad dog” look from you!

Attend Bark-tastic Comedy Shows: I’ll find the dog version of Netflix and binge-watch all the howlingly funny shows!

Practice My Pout: I’ll hone the sad puppy eyes technique to perfection for when treats are not forthcoming!

Learn a New Trick: Like how to retrieve my ball without making you throw it for the 100th time!

Negotiation Skills: I will work on my negotiation skills for longer belly rub sessions and more treats!

Canine Culinary Expert: I will sniff out the best leftovers (and maybe “accidentally” spill the trash can to check)!

Cheers to a pawsome New Year filled with more mischief and laughter! 🎉🐕
