Another to celebrate! Olive did AMAZING in Fluffy to Fit Bootcamp! In just 5 weeks she achieved 3.7% weight loss, wow! Olive made a change of diet to a weight loss diet right before doing Bootcamp, adjusted her caloric intake, and increased the amount of exercise she was doing. For Bootcamp, Olive came twice a week for a month, and participated in 3 workouts per day including land exercises, outdoor play, and time in the underwater treadmill!

If you feel your pet could use some help with weight loss, our rehab team at Laurelwood would LOVE to help! If you are not a regular client at Laurelwood, talk to your veterinarian about sending us a referral form for your pet to come to the rehab department here!

Thanks Jenna for the beautiful testimonial! We truly appreciate such kind words from our clients. Each patient is unique; there's never two dog with the same personality, it's the same way with a condition we are treating. We aim to fit every patient with a tailored rehab protocol according to the condition we are seeing them for, past history, personality, and how they react to the treatments and exercises.

Cats can be big secret keepers, especially when it comes to them being in pain! They do NOT like to show any obvious signs of pain. Knowing what to look out for when it comes to signs of pain in your cat can help you find the problem early and give them relief and back to normal sooner!

When it comes to muscle and joint pain in your cat common changes owners tend to see first is the hesitation to jump, decreased activity, and hiding more frequently. Although these things may not seem like a big deal, it could be the first signs that your cat is experiencing discomfort.

If you think your cat is experiencing pain or discomfort, let your veterinarian know. If they determine it's muscle or joint pain, rehab can help with that; specifically, laser therapy can be a huge relief for your pet!

We got another week day theme: ! This is Kato, many of you may have seen him on our instagram page, and he has been in our Fluffy to Fit program for a while now. He had a tough time losing weight since he is on a specialty diet that is high in calories and cannot change the diet due to allergies. With extra exercise time with us, and proper and safe adjustments of calorie intake, he's been doing great on his weight loss journey!

Since pets don't speak our language, we have to learn a bit of theirs. Sometimes dogs show very obvious signs of pain like vocalization when they injure themselves, experiencing an obvious limp, or not weight bearing on a leg. However, they can also show more discrete signs of pain such as bad posture to compensate for the pain, no longer going onto furniture or up stairs, even guarding themselves from being touched.
If you're noticing your dog may be exhibiting signs of pain, have them seen by your veterinarian. If the problem is muscle or joint pain, rehab can help with that; specifically, laser therapy is our secret weapon when it comes to muscle and joint pain.

Proper vs. sloppy sit. Many dogs (especially our short legged pups) fall into the sloppy sit category, mostly just from a bad habit of always doing it. This can cause back problems, and uneven muscle condition of the hind legs. Take our tips and evaluate your pets posture at home!

Here are the main points we look for in the stand position. With bad posture it is easy to think "that's the way they have always been," but it is never too late to work on good posture. Just like with us, bad posture can lead to problems throughout the body due to the compensation of other muscles and joints.

Did you know your pet could have bad posture? This could be the result of trauma or surgery, genetic or musculoskeletal issues, poor muscle condition, or bad habits. In rehab this is one of the many things we check for while doing an assessment of our patients, and it is constantly worked on during sessions.

Age is not a disease! We love our senior pets and patients here at Laurelwood! In rehab in particular, we love to see our senior patients come in for their rehab sessions! Yes, they may have a touch of arthritis, but in most cases our senior patients are some of the more advanced patients when it comes to difficulties of the exercises.
As they age, senior pets tend to lose muscle mass; this is where a lot of weakness comes from. Coming regularly to rehab, our senior patients are treated with laser therapy to aid the inflammation in any of their arthritic joints, and partake in activities that help to build and maintain muscle.
Our rehab teams wants to help your pet live as long and as comfortably as possible!

What are luxating patellas? What is a patella?
A patella is the kneecap! A luxating patella is when the patella (kneecap) moves out of the normal position. There are several grades for luxating patellas that depend on the severity of the luxation. Sometimes surgery is recommended for the condition, especially when it becomes severe.
Rehab can help your pet with a luxating patella at any time, whether it is before or after surgery, or if surgery is not yet advised for your pet.

Unfortunately there are several health conditions that are associated with obesity in pets. To prevent your pet from developing these conditions, talk to your vet about a diet change and/or caloric requirements for your pets. Increasing exercise will also help your pet lose weight. Your rehab team can be apart of your pets weight loss journey as well (some more specific information coming tomorrow).

Obesity is very common in our canine and feline companions. Since they are not out and about as much as we are, sometimes the amount of calories they intake is beyond what they exert in exercise a day, creating a buildup of fat. This can be a slow progression, and often owners don't notice because they see their pet every day. Veterinarians often diagnose obesity at an exam by comparing the pets weight to their previous history, as well as assessing their Body Condition Scores (BCS). BCS are a great tool the pet owner can use at home to do evaluations of their pet on a more regular basis to help prevent their cat or dog from becoming overweight.

We are always honoured to be chosen by our clients to aid in the care of their pets. In rehab we see patients regularly, and are always so happy to see progress week to week. This progress wouldn't be possible without their owners putting in the continued effort with their home exercises. We love to be apart of our patients journey to recovery, but is really is a team effort. We work with our clients to get to the best result for their furry family members. Thank you to our lovely clients, and all your kind words.

Maggie has shown great improvement in her gait after just 5 weeks of rehab. Maggie has been doing rehab sessions to work on strengthening and maintaining muscle, and keeping her as comfortable as possible in her senior years.

In the comparison pictures you can see that after 5 weeks, Maggie has improved her stride length, core and back muscles, and overall looks more comfortable in her movement.
