Keeps changing

Well, well, well, the CDC have modified the rules to bring your dog into the US. 👏👏👏!!! It has been simplified!!!!!

1. Fill out the new CDC form;
https://cdc-786687.workflowcloud.com/forms/090dc543-7b2f-4538-b2c7-2919d12ecc73

2. A photo is no longer needed.
3. It is good for 6 months.
4. The dog must have a microchip detected with a universal scanner. (You have seen our scanner at work)
5. It must be over 6 months of age and healthy.
6. There is no longer proof of rabies vaccination needed. HOWEVER, you will need to show a rabies certificate when coming back into Canada.

If you have questions with the new form, please ask. We are more than happy to help you.

Dr. Weese, our fabulous helper, has written with the new info.

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

Use CDC’s Q&A tool (the CDC “DogBot”) to determine what rules apply to your dog: https://bit.ly/2rww2bq

DID YOU KNOW?

- While ticks themselves cause only mild irritation, they can carry diseases that pose a serious threat to animals and humans.

- Ticks can be prevented by regular use of tick control products.
Just pulling off a tick can leave body parts attached to your dog. Ask your veterinarian about proper tick removal and tick control.

- Illnesses transmitted by ticks can case fever, anemia, paralysis, lameness, and other symptoms.

- People can not catch Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever from infected dogs, but the same ticks that bite dogs can cause these illnesses and others if they bite humans.

- Adult ticks can live up to 3 years without blood meal.

- Ticks live on three different animals during their life.

- Most ticks spend most of their life OFF the host (animal) in the environment.

- Ticks can't jump and don't "fall from trees" as most people think, but transfer onto hosts when animals or humans walk through long grass, bushes and brush.

For veterinary professionals, more detailed information on ticks can be found at https://www.capcvet.org/guidelines/ticks/.

We have prevention!

CAPC Recommendations for Fleas:

- All dogs should be treated year-round and throughout their life with flea control products to limit infestations on the pet and prevent establishment of flea populations in the home

- Recognize that flea infestations, once established, may take several months to bring under control and that to achieve control, every pet in the home must be treated

- Address flea infestations on pets as a public health concern; people in infested environments are often bitten by newly emerging fleas, inciting an allergic response, and fleas transmit a number of zoonotic agents

📬 A throwback case from Lauren Stray: "Chemical burn to OTC flea prevention sold in grocery stores (won’t share the name but I think we all know what). This shows the progression of healing. Dog is doing great and acting like nothing ever happened. Patient is now on oral flea prevention."

Although common tick habitats include wooded areas, tall grasses and leaf litter, you can find a tick just about anywhere - even your own backyard. Since they can latch onto a host quite easily, it's important to always thoroughly tick check yourself and your pets, and use parasite prevention for your pets. Speak to your veterinarian to learn more about pets and tick safety.
