The boys!

First three are our yearlings, quickly reaching their expiration date or preferably, their new breeding homes. These guys are very nice looking 👌🏼

And the last pic, is of our current, 3 year old, breeding ram! Also available for purchase if we find a suitable replacement ram 😊

This week we had to do something we’ve never thought we would have to do 💔

We surrendered this black streaky kitty to Second Chance Animal Rescue Society - Alberta 😢

I know what some of you are thinking. How could we? Rescues are full. Should’ve spayed/neutered. Should’ve just sucked it up….I see the comments on “rescued” animal posts.

Here’s little Athena’s story:
She was one day short of being 8 weeks old. Ready to move on to a new home. However, that morning there was an accident of some sort, that I didn’t see. And I found little Athena under the deck while the rest of the litter was on the deck , she was meowing and she wouldn’t come to me. When she did move, it looked off.
So there I go, crawling under the deck to retrieve our little kitty and see what was wrong. What was wrong was her leg, it was not right. So off to the vet for an emergency visit we go.
The vet could see her pretty quickly and it was determined that she very likely had broken her leg, just above the knee. Amputation was $800 (and not really recommended) but she could very likely be mended. That would be a visit to a specialist, because she was so young, and a much more hefty bill.
That kind of bill would be hard to swallow for many many people. And either option was a cost we would opt out of. And I personally did not feel that this momma could handle the extra time her care required. As much as I hated to have to put her down, I felt this was what was going to happen.
Until our vet suggestion surrendering her to SCARS! They would take care of her and see she got the treatment and care she needed! In her best interest; I agreed! I’m willing to face the judgement by those who do not know me, as I, and the people who do know me, know I love my animals and it’s hard to say goodbye to each kitten I rehome.
She has now been taken in by SCARS to receive the care she needs and we’ve made a donation in gratitude ❤️
I know there is one very special person out there that you needed SCARS to help you find 💜

Operation new pony’s meet old pony’s is not moving along very quickly…..

This paint thinks she’s the boss….Casey, our gelding, thinks he’s the boss. Been over a week and they still do this through the panels….

Usually they figure things out through the fence, safely. My thoughts are to put halters on both and introduce? Anyone with much more horse experience, have suggestions?

One more purebred lambed 😃

This ewe had a single ram lamb 💙

This year we are trying out the oral vitamins and selenium. One little sq**rt in their mouth and they’re set. It’s cheaper than injectable and no needles are necessary, which I really love!

The downside is you have to do it between 1&3 days, waiting until they’re at least 24 hours old. Which means catching a bit more energetic lamb!

Has anyone been using this? Or do you prefer the injectable? And why?

Sparrow had her annual litter of kittens 🥰

She’s the only cat who is left intact so I have someone that can carry on the Captain Blacktail line. These cats have a healthy sense of survival and are very affectionate with their person. I’ve lost only 2 cats from this line over the years!

If you’d a kitty, let me know! They’ll be ready in 2 weeks as they’re only 6 weeks old come Wednesday.

Any of them not rehomed will be spayed and neutered, like everyone else from my cat pack 😉

An update on our little boy, Mickey 😃

He’s gaining weight, running around and super affectionate! Just wants pets ALL THE TIME 😂

For anyone who’s familiar with the weaning process, there is typically a drop in weight as baby goes through the stress of being separated from momma.

Here at the ranch, we fence line wean to reduce this stress. It allows baby and momma to still see and talk to each other but prevents baby from being able to nurse. As far as I can tell, that’s what Mickeys prior owner did as well.

I’m interested to know how everyone else weans their equines!

Additionally, I’d like to know if anyone in Alberta and BC has had a farrier “rescue” their equine and subsequently kept it? Let’s say, due to “free” services later coming with a massive bill?

This is a bonded mother and daughter pair; 11 and 7 years old. The man was willing to sell them separately but that just didn’t feel right to me.

The paint (daughter) is newly trained under saddle and to drive and does really well. The black (mother) has had a saddle on her twice; so she will be my project and it’ll be a learning experience for us both!

Both have awesome temperaments and will make great kids horses.

Now that’s three ponies…going to need one more to make a four horse team 😉😄

Not a great picture because this momma is super leery of us 🙁 and we forgot to get a picture of the lambs when we were tagging them 🙈

This however, is one of our our purebred mommas and her ewe and ram lambs 😊 the ram is just tiny and his front legs aren’t quite straight yet so we will keep an eye on that. It’s not abnormal and typically resolves once they build full strength 😊

Baabaa’s milk production has seemed to catch up so we’ve let her out of the small pen and into the big pen with the rest of the sheep. And no more bottle feeding! 🤞🏼😃

We’ll keep an eye on her and her lambs to make sure they’re doing well but, hopefully we won’t have to catch them and bottle them again. We have no shortage of work to do here!

Secondly, we attended the Westlock auction yesterday and brought home this mini jenny that we have named Rosie!

A sweet, red roan, 2 year old who looks like she might be bred and coming due soon! At two years old…. 🥺

She’s currently in isolation with our super friendly wether, Dodge, to keep her company. Hopefully he will help her relax when we are not with her as she’s rubbed an area raw from rubbing on the fence (now replaced with panels).

I’d also like to add..Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there (biological or not) and an extra shout out to the Folk part of IndiFolk Ranch! Thank you so much for always helping out and being (reasonably) open to all my animal adventures 😂😘❤️

It’s been a few very busy days!

First, Picasso had her twin lambs yesterday! A ram and a ewe 🩷🩵

Things started off fine but by the end of the day there was a “lost” lamb and confusion about who momma was.

So we rigged up our temp pen in the shelter, as a sort of jug, to keep them in a small space and get them all on the same page as to who they all belong with.

That shelter and pen are still being occupied by Baabaa and her lambs while we gauge the need for a bottle situation going on there.

Baabaa did not like sharing that space with Picasso and her two lambs so our makeshift jug within the shelter was also necessary to ensure no lambs got hurt.

It seems as though our ol’ girl Baabaa can’t keep up the milk production for her two twins. The ewe lamb seems to get mo...

It seems as though our ol’ girl Baabaa can’t keep up the milk production for her two twins. The ewe lamb seems to get most of it and the ram the leftovers 😕 so we are supplementing them to help them along.

The ram will more readily take the bottle and the ewe kinda just plays with it with half hearted sucks. Which is fine! As long as they’re getting nourishment, that’s all that matters.

As soon as they recognize me as the bottle momma, we’ll let them all out of the small pen they are in. BaaBaa is taking care of them and they do better on momma than just pulling one off and bottle feeding it.

I should’ve taken before photos because Mickeys feet are a huge improvement over what they looked like before our new farrier came Friday. Fronts are nice and stacked and backs are almost there! See if you can tell the difference from the pics of his feet from Friday and what they looked like before in the trailer.

Their findings - a very large abscess in his front right hoof. Been there a long time to be that big 😢….lots of extra growth on all four feet that could’ve been taken off long ago.

So our farrier trimmed off all the excess and got him balanced on his hooves. Trimming back to where they should be stops the overgrowth and formation problems there instead of prolonging the issue. Farrier also cleaned out the abscess and treated it with iodine to prevent infection.

Farrier will come back and trim him in a month (no need to trim twice a week as we were told by our former farrier). With time, as the hoof grows out, the formation issues (commonly found in minis) will be resolved! 🙌🏼

This has been a learning experience for us, for sure! 1. NEVER ignore your gut feelings, you’ll pay for it. 2. Minis,
ideally, should be trimmed at 2 then 4 months to stop the hoof from naturally wanting to grow cylindrical. I’m sure there’ll be more to come as life, and therefore animals, is a never ending learning experience! 😃

Magnum with his boys….im really torn on what to do with these ram lambs from last July. Their horns are starting to turn out really nice and the largest one there looks like a really nice ram. To butcher now or not. What are your thoughts?

They’ve been eating last years second cut since fall and keeping their large pen pretty mowed down, grass wise.

Mary is one of the two first sheep I started out with 😃

She is the mother to Sweet Pea who lambed yesterday and is 75% blackbelly and 25% katahdin. As this lamb is sired by a purebred he will be considered a purebred (85-90%) but will not be able to be registered.

Say hi to Mickey! Our purchased jenny foal who turned out to be a HE! 🙈😂

He had his vet visit today after an unhappy (ex)farrier claimed he’s been mistreated and neglected by us. This came up after I agreed for said farrier to keep him for a couple of months as he apparently needed to be trimmed twice weekly and it was easier to do so this way.

Vet findings are:
f***l test is clean.
donkey body condition is a 2.5/5 or 4/10 and is expected for a 6 month foal, any lower and additional feed in the form of oats or high energy feed would be recommended.
feet aren’t great (expected of a mini)
frost bite on edges of ears (from that last really bad cold snap we had)
Little bit of a rasp of the lungs but no health issues such as pneumonia, etc to be concerned about.

Recommendations are:
Continue feeding second cut alfalfa
Continue free choice salt and mineral
Continue with farrier care (which will now be done by a new farrier who is also experienced with donkey rehab)

Comments: seems to be a pretty happy little donkey.

Pics of our little Mickey waiting for our vet and the invoice from the man/rescue society who shall remain nameless at this point.

We are just really relieved and happy to have our little guy back in our care 🥹💜💙

The first spring coop clean!

During the winter it can be hard to get the coop as clean as I’d like. Sometimes old straw and waste are frozen to the floor.

This was the 1st spring clean so everything got a scrape and clean out! Once it is warmer, it’ll get a good pressure wash so we can get all the waste off the walls, dirt out of any crannies and just make it nice and super fresh!

Happy chickens lay the eggs! 🤍🥚

Yep. It’s a steaming pile of **p 😅

It’s that time of year! We collect p**p and take it in to our (super awesome) local vet so they can check worm and counts and prescribe the appropriate medication.

Doing this reduces the chances of drug resistant parasites (it’s a thing!) and ensures the right medication is being used to treat the appropriate parasite.

And bonus! It’s a super cheap test to do 👌🏼

When you are building and figuring out the best places for everything.

These are quite heavy so the husband doesn’t like to move them very much. But; the price was right! 😄

Once we know where we want everything; these will be useful to create more permanent little pens ☺️
