🐾🦷 February is Veterinary Dental Health Month! 🦷🐾

Attention all pet parents! Did you know that dental health is just as important for your furry friends as it is for you? This February, let's shine a spotlight on the importance of good dental care for our beloved pets.

🔍 Did you know that dental disease is one of the most common health problems in pets, affecting up to 80% of dogs and 70% of cats by the age of three? Ignoring your pet's dental health can lead to serious issues like gum disease, tooth decay, and even organ damage.

✨ Here are some tips to keep your pet's smile shining bright:

1️⃣ Schedule regular dental check-ups with your veterinarian. Prevention is key!
2️⃣ Brush your pet's teeth regularly using a pet-specific toothbrush and toothpaste. Start slow and be patient.
3️⃣ Provide dental chews and toys designed to promote oral health.
4️⃣ Watch out for signs of dental problems such as bad breath, drooling, pawing at the mouth, or reluctance to eat.

🎉 To encourage better dental care, we're offering a special treat! Enjoy a 20% discount on all dental services throughout the month of February. Let's celebrate Veterinary Dental Health Month by committing to better dental care for our furry family members! Together, we can ensure they enjoy a lifetime of happy smiles and wagging tails.

How is Lyme Disease transmitted?
Lyme disease is primarily transmitted by deer ticks, known as blacklegged ticks.

How can my dog be infected with Lyme Disease?
The deer tick can transmit bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme Disease. Your dog is at a higher risk of contracting the disease if the tick has been feeding on your dog for more than 24 hours.

What are signs of Lyme Disease?
-lameness
-lethargy
-swollen lymph nodes

Signs of Lyme disease may appear as late as 5 months after your dog as been bitten by an infected tick.

How do we test for Lyme Disease?
The majority of dogs will not show clinical signs that’s why when your pet gets a heartworm test at LaSalle Animal Hospital – we do a combination test - Accuplex 4, it tests for current and past antigens/antibodies for heartworm, Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis. A small amount of blood is all that is needed.

Measure your dog’s risk:
Have you seen or heard of ticks on people or pets in your area?

Is your dog likely to go into tall grass, woodsy areas, camping, or travel to areas where Lyme disease is present?

Do you live in an area with deer ticks and/or where there are cases of Lyme disease in animals or humans?

If you answered Yes, your pet may be at high risk of Lyme Disease, Lyme vaccination for your dog may be recommended.

Are you falling for a common heartworm misconception? Read on and get the facts.

Myth: Monthly preventive medication is a hassle.

Fact: The best way to deal with heartworm is to prevent it in the first place, and that’s not hard to do.

Heartworm prevention comes in both oral and topical formulas, so you and your veterinarian can decide which method is most convenient for you and your pet.

Myth: Why bother with prevention? I can just treat heartworm if my dog gets it.

Fact: Treating a heartworm infection, especially a severe one, isn’t as easy as you might think. Treatment can be very costly and can be quite taxing on your pets’ lungs and other organs.

Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes - so warm, muggy areas are hotbeds. If a mosquito carrying heartworm larvae bites your dog – one bite is all it takes!

Myth: If my dog is on heartworm prevention, they don’t need to be tested.

Fact: Preventive treatments are incredibly effective, but no preventive is 100% effective, and since dogs with early infection can be asymptomatic, annual testing is always recommended.

Testing is very easy; your vet just needs to take a small sample of your dog’s blood which is sent to a lab for testing.
