Starting off posts can sometimes be a daunting task, but this one is simple - We need help. In fact, we're desperate, and there are many tears as I write this.
We currently have approx. 60 animals in our care. We have a waiting list of over 50 animals waiting to come into care - some who have been waiting for a very long time. We get almost daily messages and emails about dumped domestic rabbits, and we're only 3-4 weeks away from "Easter Bunny Dump Season" - when all of the rabbits adopted as Easter gifts will have had their novelty wear off and they are abandoned outside to fend for themselves. This past weekend, I saw a post where a dog had discovered a deceased domestic rabbit under melted snow, and I ask myself if that was one of the rabbits we had to say "no" to because we didn't have any room :(
We have recently posted seeking foster homes - and while that will take a portion of the burden off of us, the fact for us remains that we need somewhere larger to even put a dent in the problem that we're facing as one of the only rescues in the area that takes in the animals that we do. Our current foster homes are bursting at the seams, and "HQ" is overflowing.
Simply put - we need a facility to help ease the emotional and spacial burden on not only our foster homes, but our directors too. We don't need anything fancy, and we don't need somewhere that would have to be open to the public. What do we need? Lots of open space for x-pens, with running water and temperature control, and perhaps a washroom. Area of the city is mostly unimportant to us right now. Cost is also a factor, In a perfect world, if we had a space that was even in part donated, it could be a game changer for us.
We understand that this is a bit of a big and unusual ask, but if each of our over 4,000 followers just shared this post, it might just reach the right person/people that can help us make this happen.
If we can find such a place, we will need some pretty big fundraisers to help with start up costs, as well as sustaining us on an ongoing basis. We have a savings account with money set aside solely for the purpose of opening and operating a physical facility.
