Found this on another page, really good read! As this is a US post, Beginner Novice is Pre Novice in Canada.

For the Novice A and Beginning Novice handlers out there, you might find this helpful:
- Just because a judge works fast, doesn't mean you have to. You paid for your time. Relax. Settle your dog. Take as much time between exercises as needed. Go at YOUR pace, not the judges
- Ring entry is everything. Get your dogs attention before going into the ring and as you enter the ring and set up. Don't break that attention. If you and your dog are not paying attention to each other when you start, you may not ever get that attention back
- Tell your dog how good they are between exercises. Clap. Scratch their head. Make them happy and reconnect. Every exercise is a new opportunity to show how brilliant you are as a team
- In beginner novice, you are allowed one extra command or word of praise while heeling. Use it, but use it strategically. This last weekend there was something stinky in a corner that foweled a lot of advanced dogs on the about turns. I cautioned a fellow competitor with a terrier about this smell and suggested we use our extra command as we started the about turn. It worked and both of us had nice about turns
- On the stand for exam, stand your dog, settle them, take a pause and ENSURE YOU ARE STANDING IN HEEL POSITION, then say stay and walk away. Many handlers got dinged for not ensuring they were in heel position before leaving. Again, this isn't timed. Pause and get it right
- Did your dog blow off the front and go straight to finish? Did the judge give you the finish command anyway? Is your dog straight? No? Then give them the finish command or their "get in place" command. The judge is giving you an opportunity to fix a crooked sit. It could make the difference between losing 3 pts and 5 pts.
- Novice group down stays: The judges commands are: "Prepare Your Dog for the Long Down"; "Are you ready?"; "Down Your Dog", "Leave Your Dog" Waite to down your dog until the judge tells you to down your dog. The prepare your dog part is to make sure you are in position and ready for the exercise.
Mostly, just have fun. Enjoy the journey. In the end, people remember the dog, not the titles, not the scores. Long ago I had "Mr Perfect". He was such a talented dog and very consistent. He left me 13 years ago. Recently I read the journal I kept while showing him. It documented one training issue after another and a whole host of issues that we had. I had forgotten all of it and only remembered the love and joy that I had showing that dog. He truly was "Mr Perfect" to me.
