Created by Britney Fache from Fache Florals in collaboration with world-renowned hoop dancer Buffy Handel and @folklorama.
“The hoop dance, rooted in Indigenous cultures of North America, originated among Native American tribes, particularly the Plains and Southwestern tribes. Used for storytelling, celebration, and spiritual expression, it incorporates multiple hoops and symbolizes elements of life and nature. Through intertribal trading, the dance reached Canada and was performed by medicine men, featuring shapes that held deep significance related to their visions. The philosophical meanings behind the dance can take years to grasp, and typically, permission to learn is granted by a mentor. Among the many shapes I create with my hoops, one holds special significance: a tribute to my mother, who attended a residential school. In my dance, I form a rose that represents my mother‘s natural essence, a flower that only flourishes in the northern regions,” - Buffy Handel, award-winning entrepreneur, and global ambassador of the hoop dance.
You can see this mannequin and 14 others at Fleurs de Villes ARTISTE at The Leaf until January 26. We encourage you to purchase your tickets ahead of time at assiniboinepark.ca, as time slots are sure to sell out.

Star gets a variety of enrichment daily! Enrichment is an essential part of care as it encourages animals to elicit natural behaviours, such as foraging, exploration, and play.
However, due to Star’s size and her love for playing, these toys can be damaged pretty quickly.
This Giving Tuesday we’re asking for your help to replace and replenish our supply of enrichment items – like balls and barrels for the bears!
Give the gift of enrichment at assiniboinepark.ca/givingtuesday

We have an Agee update! 🐻❄️
Agee is our 29-year old polar bear who is currently enjoying her golden years at the Zoo. Thanks to the Animal Care team and help from a local contractor, we recently installed wooden stairs in her habitat so she can continue to enjoy moving around her space.
Now in her retirement, she is behind the scenes and not visible to the public. She continues to enjoy her private area and strengthening her relationships with our Animal Care team.

Sampson and Salju Singing
WOOP WOOP!
Come by the Animals of Asia area of the Zoo in the mornings and you can hear the white-handed gibbons creating their songs all throughout the area! This “singing” is done for a variety of reasons, including to let each other know that other gibbons are around and to strengthen their social bonding.
Fun fact: Males and females have their own specific part of the song to sing with tempo and pitch. Here, Sampson and Salju are singing together!
