Our animal care team is looking after a LOT of animals right now - so much so we've run out of litter boxes for our cats.
If you have supplies you're not using, or are able to purchase to donate (the ones pictured are from Dollarama on Instacart 😉) we would greatly appreciate it. The preferred litter would be clay or pellet, but any form would be graciously accepted (including open containers your cat decided they didn't like 👼).

Hot tip, if you're wanting to purchase litter you can get it from WHS Pet Shop and all proceeds from the sale go back to WHS. Just mark in the order notes you're donating it to the shelter🥰.

Thank you so much to our community for your constant support 💜🧡.

Say hello to Cashew! He's a curious but sensitive boy who enjoys some hands-off interaction with toys or treats. He likes being around people, but is not always a fan of touch, and prefers a considerate approach allowing him to choose the level of cuddles.
Cashew is almost 2, and has been waiting for his forever home for a few months - we know it's out there! If you have room for this kinda shy ginger, call our adoptions line at 204-982-2035.

"There are too many dogs in Manitoba. There are too many cats, too.

There are even too many smaller companion animals, like hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs. There are too many pets without homes. Shelters are overflowing and rescue groups are desperately seeking foster homes and adopters.

Yet, so many Manitobans continue to buy companion animals, whether online, from breeders or from stores. If you’re one of them, you’re part of the problem.

In early August, 137 dogs were removed from a property just north of Winnipeg. This came after the Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) already took in nearly 70 dogs removed from a Fort Richmond home in May. At one point this month, the WHS had over 600 animals in care.

“We are pleading with the public to put a hard stop on purchasing animals — online or in person from puppy mills, backyard breeders, or supporting any form of sale that can hinder the progress of managing overpopulation in this province,” said WHS CEO Jessica Miller.

She added that she has “never seen hordes of animals in such inhumane conditions, resulting in medical issues and long-term care, as I have in the last few months.” She said she has also never seen the shelter’s staff and volunteers so tired.

This plight has been well publicized. Yet, if you go on to popular online sales site Kijiji Canada — which claims to only facilitate the “rehoming” of pets — the ads for puppies for purchase are seemingly endless. “Purebred Golden Retriever puppies. Only 3 left! $500,” reads one ad. “Yorkie puppy, $1,000,” reads another. “Ready to go! Cute and beautiful maltipoo,” says another.

At the time of looking, there were over 330 ads for puppies, many selling more than one. In total for all pets, there were over 750 ads.

Where will all these animals go? And who is allowing this to all go so unchecked?

“For more than 12 years, the province has turned its back on dogs and rescue groups across the province and ignored the law when it comes to licensing breeders,” said Kaitlyn Mitchell, a lawyer with Animal Justice. She said allowing irresponsible breeders and puppy mills to operate without oversight “not only jeopardizes the health and well-being of dogs used at these facilities — many of whom endure miserable lives breeding litter after litter in filthy conditions — but also clogs up our shelter system, leaving stray dogs and puppies across the province with nowhere to go.” Currently, Animal Justice is exploring legal options “to force the province to comply with the Animal Care Act and resume breeder licensing as soon as possible,” Mitchell added. “Enough is enough.”

But it’s not only dogs that animal advocates are concerned about when it comes to pet overpopulation in Manitoba. In July, local small animal rescue group, Popcorn & Binkies Rescue Haven, called on Winnipeg city council to ban the sale of small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters in city pet stores. Major retailers like Petland stopped selling commercially bred dogs or cats over a decade ago, but small animals continue to be for sale.

“Small animals require highly specialized care and, as prey animals who hide illness and injuries, owners have to be vigilant in monitoring for any changes,” said the group in a statement. “Inevitably, weeks after their purchase, they are dumped outside when families realize that these living creatures need continuous care. This puts a tremendous strain on rescue organizations, who are already over capacity.”

Cindy Hildebrand, director and founder of Popcorn & Binkies Rescue Haven added that breeders and “hamster mills” are “pumping out these animals like crazy,” which are then sold in stores and online, adding to the pressure put on rescue groups like hers.

Because, for every pet purchased from a breeder (whether “reputable” or not), there is a perfectly adoptable animal — yes, even those desirable “designer” types — left sitting in a kennel or cage, or taking up precious space in a foster home. There are only so many homes for all the companion animals in our province. Buying animals increases the demand for more, adding to the cycle and putting greater strain on limited resources.

Ultimately, there is just no such thing as a responsible breeder in regions experiencing pet overpopulation. And if you’re handing over your money to keep these people in business, you are just as irresponsible as they are.

“Adopt, don’t shop,” said Miller. “Our shelter animals have so much love to give and they cannot be left behind. Every companion animal purchased externally of the shelter from backyard breeders leaves our animals in the dust. This must end.”

Jessica Scott-Reid is a journalist and animal advocate. She also sits on the board of directors at The Winnipeg Humane Society.

Happy Friday! Remember Dove, our 2-legged cutie? She's living her best life:

"Before seeing Dove on Instagram, I'd had every intention of waiting a few months after the passing of my previous cat before adopting. I'd had enough time to at least allow myself to LOOK at some of the cats needing homes, but I hadn't felt that desperate tug until I saw Dove's video at the beginning of May.

I called the next morning and that afternoon she was coming home with me.

Almost four months in now and Dove has fully integrated herself into the household, and her missing limbs hasn't slowed her down in the slightest.

She's made friends with the resident orange cat Archie (who spent her first month here meowing outside her room) and tolerates the others.

She almost always moves FAST before flopping down into a sprawl. She loves to be where the people are, and in true cat fashion she can be found in anything that looks like a rectangle on the floor. Book, blanket, pillow, paper. If it's a rectangle, she's there. Another well loved location is the center of the kitchen floor, where she will move out of your way only if she MUST.

Another favorite location is the highest perch of the cat tree, which she reaches without issue in record time, where she can watch all the urban wildlife and swat at bugs.

Bedtime brings my personal favorite moments, which involve a solid minimum five minutes of me scratching "the good spots" she can't reach with her missing leg and which revs her purring right up. Then she settles herself down against my legs or in her bed at my feet for the rest of the night (only very occasionally picking a fight with my toes beneath the blankets).

All in all, I'm head over heels for this sparky girl and look forward to spoiling her for her whole life."

Our Fabulous Foster for August goes out to ALL those who have helped with our bottle kittens! As we’re approaching the end of busy season (🤞), we want to recognize everyone who went above and beyond to take care of our tiniest foster animals. This year we had a record-breaking 150 since the beginning of May - with 70 last year, we’ve more than doubled the number of kittens we were able to help. Without you, these kittens would not have survived. Amazing work, each and every single one of you.

Squirrels are highly intelligent and athletic animals who can get themselves into trouble when they engage in their natural instincts and gnaw on our decks and wood furniture. Contrary to popular belief, relocating squirrels is not a humane method of pest management as the majority of relocated animals die because they can't find food, water, or shelter in unfamiliar territory.

Instead aim to co-exist with squirrels: spray your deck with a mixture of 4 cups of warm water and 2 tablespoons of an organic hot sauce, or rub wood surfaces with chemical-free bar soap.

We heard you loud and clear - you want more alumni updates. On let's start with Kiwi - read about her new life and PLEASE tell your dog we said 🙋.

"Kiwi is an amazing new addition to our family. From day one she had my heart. She is loving, affectionate, spunky and has her own personality. A major cuddler, some may say she doesn’t understand personal bubbles lol.

Since day 1 Kiwi has made herself at home. She sleeps at my side every night. At home she has her own window seat that she loves to sleep in and watch all the goings on outside on those really hot summer days. And when she is tired of that, she tucks herself in for a nice peaceful nap. When at grandma & grandpa’s house, she likes to be around her people and play with her older, bigger cousin Cocoa. Or steal her bed and claim it as her own lol.

Kiwi has her favourite stuffy at both houses (ours and grandparents). She HAS to take it outside every time she goes out and loves to just carry it around. Even when on walks it has to come with. She gets “cookies” (milk bones) as a treat and chooses to hide them instead of eat them which is entertaining to watch. I don’t think she gets that next to the couch isn’t really a hiding spot lol. We have also learned that she LOVES herself some ice cream occasionally after playing, running and splashing at the dog park.

Recently I did some concrete work and she cemented her place in this family furever (pic 4).

Thank you for bringing this sweet girl into my life. We found each other right when I needed it most."

Almuni appreciation 🙌:

"I adopted Ruby (formerly known as Kaela) back at the end of April of this year. I was very anxious bringing her home as I was not sure if Emerald (also adopted from the WHS) would get along with another cat or not. After weeks of training, slowly welcoming, and LOTS of patience…they are now best friends.

Your team gave me the best thing in life, and those are my cats!!!! Thank you all again."
