We love hearing about our alumni 🥹. Send your updates to [email protected] and read below for a pretty good case on why EVERYONE should have a black cat (we have a few at the shelter right now if you're looking 👀).

"We've had Cou (short for Acoustic, his WHS name) with us for almost 7 months, and he's grown from a tiny little fuzz ball to a distinguished young man. He's a total chatterbox, and shows his affection by bashing anyone and everything with his fluffy tail.

He loves paper bags, especially chewing on the handles, and will pounce on any fabric that dares wiggle even slightly. He's keeping our other cat young with his need to play and by smothering her with kisses and cuddles. She's slowly starting to tolerate him, but we just adore this long floof.

Thanks again to everyone at WHS that helped us bring him home."

Gingerbread was with us through the holidays, and is still waiting for his forever family. He's made some cat friends while here (all have since been adopted), and will fit into a quiet home perfectly.
This 2-year-old loves his chill time, and after sussing you out for a couple minutes, will confidently request some scritches and cuddles.

Come give this handsome good luck charm his best life.

A new e-petition, sponsored by MP Mel Arnold, has been put forth calling on the Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature to step in and protect long-tailed macaques being shipped from Cambodia to Canada.

This petition follows the government’s response to the Animal Protection Party of Canada’s previous e-petition on this issue. While a reply was provided, it did not sufficiently engage with the urgency of the matter or the serious ethical and environmental concerns surrounding the continued use of an endangered species as disposable "research tools". Instead, the response largely reaffirmed existing, outdated policy, leaving these critical issues unaddressed.

This new e-petition sets out clear, concrete actions within the Minister's authority to end Canada's role in this trade and protect long-tailed macaques before further harm is done.

📣 Please sign the petition today and share it with your network: https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-7020

Farmers in Ohio spent more than a decade preparing for the transition away from gestation crates. They invested in new facilities, infrastructure, and housing systems suited for group living - these changes are NOT expected to increase pork prices.

While other countries have passed legislation banning or limiting the use of gestation crates, Canada continues to rely on industry to implement change. With their deadline to eliminate the use of gestation crates having come and gone, only around 50% of Cdn pork producers are in compliance.

The WHS is urging the Government of Manitoba to be a leader in implementing a legislative ban on gestation crates, with a mandatory and enforceable deadline. Make your voice heard by writing to the Minister of Agriculture: https://winnipeghumanesociety.ca/animal-issues/take-action-2/

Our first foster family feature of 2026! 🌟
Caron and her husband began fostering with us in 2016, after the loss of their beloved senior cat. Recently retired and eager to travel, they found fostering was the perfect fit for their lifestyle, allowing them to open their home to cats in need of recovery time before adoption.

Since her start, Caron has welcomed 165+ cats and kittens. Whether just needing a safe place to gain weight, or healing from varying medical conditions, Caron and her husband consistently open their hearts and their home for our felines.

For Caron, fostering has been a true win-win. She can welcome a single cat or an entire litter of kittens whenever she’s home, giving them a safe and loving place to rest. Caron happily admits that life just doesn’t feel complete without at least one (or several) cats around.

Caron has lovingly kept a journal filled with photos and little tidbits about every foster they’ve cared for as a testament to the deep connection and joy fostering has brought into their lives.
Their dedication, compassion, and love have helped countless cats and kittens prepare for their forever homes, and we are incredibly grateful to have people like Caron and her husband as part of the WHS foster community.

Send these tips to your outdoor-loving pals and help keep all your favourite pets safe this winter.

❄️Jackets, vests, and booties aren't just for style - protective gear is great at helping keep the core and extremities warm.

❄️Monitor your pets when they’re outside - pet’s ears and paws are especially susceptible to frostbite in the winter.

❄️Take shorter walks, or exercise inside if possible.

❄️Wipe pets paws after outside time (DYK certain ice-melts can irritate the skin?).

❄️Don’t leave your pets alone in a vehicle in the cold.

❄️Ice can stick in-between your dog’s pads - trim any long fur around the paws.
