An update from Tetra (now Laila), who came in with her new babies early in 2025, and spent time in our foster care. She's been with her family for a year now and is proving that the right fit is out there for everyone ๐ฅน.
"We adopted Laila nearly a year ago, only a few months after we had to say goodbye to our first dog. I wasn't sure I was ready for a new pup in our lives, but I'm so glad we did.
To say she's filled a hole in our hearts and lives would be an understatement. She loves her routine and spending time with her humans, whether it's sniffing everything around the neighbourhood or snuggling on the bed. Laila is the sweetest girl who just wants to hang out, eat food, and go for as many walks as possible.
It wasn't an easy road. Laila was (and honestly still is) a very timid girl. She refused to get into the car with us when we adopted her, opting to lie down on the ground in defiance despite it being -30C outside. She was stressed out from shelter life and being separated from her puppies.
The following weeks and months were about building trust, relationships, and a new routine. It helped that we worked from home, so she had plenty of time to get to know us.
She took to my wife immediately as her favourite human. It would be MONTHS before I would get similar treatment ๐
(100% worth the effort though).
Laila is also slowly learning to trust other dogs. Over the early months, she would cower away from even the smallest and friendliest of dogs. Fast forward to just the other day, a random dog that escaped from their owner came to introduce themselves and Laila confidently stood her ground.
Her biggest test was camping over the summer. She initially wasn't a fan, preferring to hangout (hide) in the tent whenever she could. By the last trip of the year, she didn't want to leave.
We try to cherish every day we have with this precious girl. We hope every animal that comes through your shelter has the opportunity to create as much joy in someone's life as Laila has done for us."
