Tyron is one of our handsome sphynx cat patients! 🐈
Here are a few fun facts about sphynx cats:
1. Sphynx cats are very social and have a friendly nature.
2. Sphynx cats don’t like to be alone. They enjoy the company of their owners, and are generally good with other cats and dogs.
3. Understandably, sphynx cats don’t like the cold, as they have no fur to protect them from the elements and keep them warm!
4. Sphynx cats are closer to hypoallergenic than other cats. Many pet allergies are caused by pet dander, and since sphynx cats do not have fur to shed, the risks of allergenic contact with humans is greatly reduced.
5. They can get a sunburn! Due to a lack of coat to protect them from the sun’s rays, their skin is more sensitive, and therefore sphynx cats should be kept as indoor cats and their time in the sun should be monitored.
6. Sphynx cats need frequent baths. Their skin produces a lot of oil, which forms a greasy film on their bodies. Sphynx owners are recommended to bathe their cat at least once a week to keep them clean and healthy.
This pesky guy was an unwelcome hitch-hiker on one of our patients recently! 😬
Just a reminder that even as summer is starting to draw to a close, ticks continue to stay out and active as long as temperatures remain above 0°C.
If you are in need of preventative tick medications for your pet, feel free to reach out and we will be happy to assist you!

How cute are these two brothers?? ❤️
Cooper and Teddy paid us a visit last week, under the suspicion that they may have inhaled or ingested foxtails.
Foxtails are spiked seed heads found on some plants and grasses, and despite how pretty they can appear in nature or in a floral bouquet, foxtails are actually very dangerous for our furry friends.
Foxtails enter the body through ingestion or being inhaled, and then can migrate into tissues, causing abscesses and infections. Foxtails are especially dangerous to pets in the summer months when they have dried out and hardened.
If you suspect that your pet may have inhaled or ingested foxtails, we recommend visiting your local vet clinic as soon as possible.
Stay safe out there! 🌾

Fireworks can be a fun and exciting way to celebrate holidays and festivities! However, for our pets, fireworks can be scary, with their loud noise and flashes of light. Many animals experience anxiety during events such as thunderstorms or fireworks, which can lead to barking, howling, shivering in fear, or hiding away.
However, the good news is that there are steps you can take to help your pets remain calm during these stressful events.
1) Keep your pet inside. If possible, try to be home with them during fireworks, or leave them with a trusted pet-sitter who is known by your pet.
2) Try setting up an area in a quiet space away from windows, such as a basement or a larger closet so that they can't hear or see the fireworks. Use a crate if that's where your pet feels safe, and make sure to provide them with familiar toys and treats.
3) Make sure your pets have identification, such as a collar with a tag, or a microchip or tattoo, so that if your pet happens to get loose during fireworks, they have a better chance of being found and returned to you.
4) If you have your pet with you at a fireworks show, make sure to keep them on a leash or in a crate and pay attention to how they are reacting during the show.
5) If your pet experiences fear and anxiety during fireworks and thunderstorms, we recommend reaching out to your pet’s veterinarian as there are supplements and medications that can assist with helping your pet feel more comfortable and less fearful when these loud noises occur.
Hopefully these tips and tricks are helpful for providing a safe space for your pets this weekend!
Happy Canada Day!

Did you know that heartworm disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito? As many as 30 species of mosquitoes can transmit heartworms.
Heartworm season runs in Manitoba from June 1st - November 1st, and we recommend protecting your pets during that time by using monthly heartworm preventative medications, which can be purchased from your local veterinary clinic.

Our Story
Drs. Bronwyn and Leigh Chisholm met in 2008 while attending vet school in Saskatoon. They were married soon after graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012, and immediately struck off on veterinary adventures that took them from the Peace River region of Alberta, through Saskatchewan, to where you will find them now: in Winnipeg MB with their young children. Bronwyn and Leigh have always dreamed of owning their own vet clinic, where they can practice high quality medicine, while doing what they love: building relationships of trust and camaraderie with their clients, so together they can work towards the best and longest life for the animals they care for.
