Great information on nails 🐾
Let's talk nails!
Proper nail care of your dog is so incredibly important for a number of reasons:
🐾 long nails can be slippery on hard surfaces which cause injury as well as frustration for your dog
🐾 long nails actually change the way a dog stands, walks, and runs as they put pressure on their feet and legs, causing pain and discomfort
🐾 long term, long nails can even cause damage to bones, ligaments, and muscles
🐾 long nails can break or split easily, as they get caught on things causing them to rip, splinter, or tear; this causes pain, bleeding, and sometimes infections
🐾 long nails can hurt humans and playmates during play, or even during normal movement of every day life like trying to sit with us
🐾when nails become overgrown, they can grow *into* the paw pads and become embedded, which can also cause infection, which is extremely painful and requires a vet visit
For more information about nail trims, please take a look at the article below (link in comments) regarding the importance of proper, regular nail trimming.
If you're able to start young, and follow the steps in this article, you may be able to successfully cut your dog's nails yourself.
If not, please seek out a professional groomer. Unfortunately, it's yet another unregulated industry in the dog world, so be cautious about who you're trusting your dog with. Being rushed, or forced, to do nail trims can end in trauma for the dog, which will make future nail trims even more challenging.
* This sweet rescue is 1.5 years old, and as far as we can tell, they've never had a nail trim... but pawsitively pampered grooming did an amazing job at keeping them calm and relaxed during the entire process, and just look at the difference in how the foot looks before and after the trim! Plus, they are still a very Happy Dog! *
