DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL!
It may be really disappointing and frustrating when our dogs are not the social beings we expected them to be.

Many believe dogs should just naturally get along with other dogs, after all they’re the same species.

Some believe the “unsociable” dog has a behaviour problem that needs to be “fixed”.

Early, appropriately timed and correct socialisation is vitally important, but sometimes despite all of this, some dogs are just not that sociable.

Sometimes this can be improved, especially if the cause is from a negative experience, but genetics, breed tendencies, individual personalities, health and age all contribute to tolerance and sociability, which also change throughout life.

If we, as a human species, don’t get along with everyone we meet, how can we expect our dogs to?

Do we label every person that has an argument, doesn’t make friends with everyone they meet, doesn’t like every other person, prefers not to socialise - as having a problem that needs to be fixed?

Why is it so easy to accept that every individual person is different than to accept that every individual dog is different?

When we have done what we can to improve our dogs’ social skills, we need to accept and acknowledge our dogs for the individuals they are, allow and respect their choice of whether to be sociable or not and never force interactions that a dog is not comfortable with.

Wed 7-8am Little Legs Only Agility Class (for small dogs), begins Jan 31 for 5 consecutive weeks, mixed level (Hacienda Pinilla)

Classes are Saturdays Nov 4-25, Dec 2-9 8:30-9-30am in Hacienda Pinilla.

I picked up a few extra snuffle mats today while in Liberia! So excited to see these are available. Let me know if you want one! *I had people ask how the mats are used… this is how😊!

Why should you train your dog to do agility and tricks? -improved focused attention on you -impulse control -enhances recall training -helps mentally challenge a bored dog -leaves a dog feeling calm and fufilled NEW ONLINE CLASSES ARE FILLING! Don't miss out! Beginning Agility (2 spots left) or Trick Training (2 spots left) -Each class meets on line for 30 minutes twice a week for 4 weeks beginning Sept 7 Beginning Agility Tues and Thurs 11-11:30am Trick Training Tues and Thurs 12-12:30pm What you don't have to worry about: -any prior training with your dog -no need to drive anywhere -no special equipment (everything you need you have in your house, trust me!) What you get: -a total of 8 30 minute classes for just $40 (yep that was written correctly!) -a dog with a purpose! This transcends to a dog with more confidence, impulse control, better manners and improved focus -a better communication style with your dogs training is fun for you both -a tired dog when class is over! Rehlein is learning to ignore distractions that are important to her on a walk (birds, iguanas, monkeys) and return to me when cued. Recall training is done in a step by step way with slow addition of distractions to set her up for success. I think she is doing very well😀!

Tracking!
Tracking!

Tracking is a dog sport that uses a dog’s nose very much the way it was intended... to find stuff! Mick and Drew are one of our intermediate teams. Mick is able to find and follow a scent trail to an item of clothing left behind by the track layer. This is the same way a search and rescue dog would follow a trail to find a missing person. Here Mick is learning to turn a corner as the scent changes direction. Tracking class is every Fri morning at 9am. Contact me for details!
