Horses normally graze for about 60% of the day!
The way the horses digestive system works means they have to eat a lot of fibre and should never have an empty stomach.
This means horses produce A LOT of manure- about 40-50 pounds per day per horse.

I have a lot of horse manure in sacks just inside our drive in Folgate lane if anyone would like some for their garden please help yourself.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the info on the fence, but I know everyone would like to get to know our horses and ponies a bit better.

If you'd like to see the horses up close, please drop me me a message so I can encourage them to come to the fence and tell you a bit more about them .

Current circumstances mean family groups only at each time but just let me know when you're coming.

All age groups welcome even if you want to know why you should pass wide and slow when you're driving.

Afternoons are best for me.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone!

Hi everyone,

I have downloaded some interesting pictures of horses with their skeletons drawn on which I will put on the fence.

There are some colouring/worksheets which you could download yourself from www.HORSESINSIDEOUT.com or I could put them out if necessary.

Message me to let me if they're needed!

The healing effects of hawthorn
9 February, 2001 00:00
The hawthorn (crataegus oxyacantha) is a deciduous tree of which there are approximately 1000 different species. Crataegus oxyacantha is a variety of the English hawthorn – it can grow to 15ft and produces a pink flower but rarely bears fruit.

Hawthorn has been used for centuries as a general heart tonic, and its components can help improve blood circulation and increase the blood supply to areas of local injury.

The flavenoids present in hawthorn have shown to enhance the connective tissue structure of the endothelial lining of heart cavities and the blood and lymph vessels.

Hawthorn dilates the coronary artery and thereby enhances blood flow to the heart muscle.

Hawthorn is also a peripheral vasodilator and dilates blood vessels away from the heart. This lowers blood pressure and relieves the burden placed upon the heart.

The effect of hawthorn on horses and ponies

Hawthorn forms a natural part of the horse’s diet. In the spring, many horses can beobserved eating the new, young leaves from hawthorn trees.

Horses with specific conditions such as laminitis and navicular syndrome can benefit from hawthorn where blood vessel dilation and strengthening will improve the circulation t these “local” injury areas.

However, caution must be observed where a performance horse is prone to bleeding. It is generally accepted that liquids are absorbed more efficiently than solids. It is also vital that the herb/plant supplier can guarantee thattheir source is sustainable and that their growing and harvesting cycles have not been treated with any organo-phosphates or man-made chemical fertiliser.

Winter highjinks..see how the herd move together.
Bucking & rearing whilst an important attack / defence move is also used in play & hierarchy & seldom connects in a play scenario.

Cant beat a good scratch in this warm dry weather. Not only does a roll feel nice but it sheds winter coat & mud & dust can act as a sun screen & insect repellent.
Rolling is also courageous like yawning so you will often see more than one animal roll at a time.

Visit our Field full of Horses at PE14 7HY Folgate Lane during your daily Lock-down exercise. Herd watching can be enjoyable pastime but best not touch or feed the animals at the moment (social distancing). Feel free to post here with any non riding related questions - why not draw a picture of your favorite horse / pony as the field info sheets or perhaps your favorite lives elsewhere. If there is anything we can help with for home schooling please post here. Enjoy.
