The Dangers of Retractable Leashes

As a professional pet care provider, safety of my clients' pets is my top priority. While retractable leashes might seem convenient and are marketed as a tool to give your dog more freedom, they come with significant risks that every pet owner should know. It is for the following reasons I no longer use retractable leashes on walks:

1. Limited Control
Retractable leashes allow dogs to wander up to 30 feet away. This can lead to accidents, such as:
- Running into traffic
- Approaching aggressive dogs
- Startling cyclists or pedestrians
-Eating something hazardous off of the ground without you being close enough to stop it

2. Risk of Injury
A retractable leash can cause severe injuries such as:
- Burns or cuts if the cord wraps around you or your dog; the cord can cut to the bone
- Broken bones and other injuries to the human if the sudden stop or pull at the end of the leash causes a fall
- Eye injuries if the cord snaps, or if the clasp breaks. The cord recoils at high speeds and can injure you and/or your dog.

3. Equipment Failure
-These leashes can jam, snap, or malfunction, leaving your dog without secure control when it’s needed most.
-If the locking mechanism on the leash fails when you need to stop your dog, the dog can endanger themselves before you are able to regain control of the situation.

4. Bad Behavior Reinforcement
-Retractable leashes create constant tension because of their spring-loaded mechanism. When a dog pulls, the leash automatically extends, allowing them to move forward. Dogs quickly learn that pulling on the leash=forward movement and more freedom=rewarding excitement and impulse, making it harder to train proper leash manners. Pulling becomes a habit because the dog knows that pulling works to achieve their goals.
-Inconsistent signals and lack of clear boundaries: Dogs on a retractable leash do not learn to stay within a set distance from their handler, as the leash allows them to roam at varying lengths. Furthermore, dogs cannot distinguish whether they are being pulled back for correction, whether you locked the leash, or whether they hit the very end of the leash. This leads to unclear communication and dogs become conditioned to ignore leash tension altogether.

Alternatives:
✔️ Use a traditional leash (4-6 feet long).
✔️ Employ a headcollar such as the Halti or Gentle Leader.
✔️ Train your dog to walk politely on a loose leash.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, friends!

Heat stroke is by far the most common hazard that effects pets once the weather warms up. Heatstroke happens when a dogs body temperature exceeds a healthy range, and the consequences can be deadly. Just a few minutes in a car on a hot day can be enough to send a dog into heat stroke, research has shown that on a partly cloudy 93°F day, a car can heat up to 120°F in just 15 minutes. Heatstroke can also occur when dogs exercise in hot weather, so avoid giving them exercise in the middle of the day and wait until it cools down. If you must exercise with your dog, having water with you is a must as well as taking frequency breaks in a shady area.
