Have a Heart Namibia - Spay and Neuter Project

Have a Heart Namibia - Spay and Neuter Project Have-a-Heart Namibia, saving lives through sterilisation and medical care! THANK YOU!

This is the official page of the 'Have-a-Heart Namibia' project - a much needed project that allows us to provide free spay and neuter services to dogs and cats of low and no income families across Namibia, also in areas currently without veterinary services. Have-a-Heart is a registered non-profit organisation in Namibia (21/2014/0378) which aims to reduce stray animal populations in a sustainabl

e and humane way, thus eliminating the need for mass euthanasia. Since starting in 2013, Have-a-Heart has grown to having teams working in several towns across Namibia and has collectively sterilised over 22,800 animals (October 2024). The project is run by volunteers and fully dependent on donations - every cent of your donation is used for the welfare of Namibia's dogs and cats. We received a lovely message from the great team at Beukes Veterinary Consulting in Gobabis, and we are so happy about it:

"Good day Geesche,

We had a spay day for the first time at the Skoonheid settlement on the 29th of January 2024, 112km North of Gobabis.

We had a lot of people showing up, but unfortunately only 8 people wanted to have their dogs spayed/neutered.
So we did 7 sterilizations and 1 castration.
But we will make a turn at Skoonheid again, because there are definitely a lot of dogs in the area!

Attached are some photos of the day.

The next day we decided to get some dogs from the informal settlement in Gobabis and 12 dogs showed up at the practice!

So we did another 7 sterilizations and 5 castrations.

Regards
Beukes Vet"

How awesome is this!!! We love visiting new areas, and we 100 % understand and respect and also love when owners are at first a bit sceptical about trusting people they don't know with their dogs! The freedom to decide and check what is going on is important to us, as good things will happen only with mutual respect. Asking questions, having conversations, and checking out all is okay; this is how long-lasting trust and animal welfare at the grassroots work.

With YOUR support, we will be able to reach more responsible dog and cat owners and offer them the freedom of choice for a healthier future for their pet, the family and the whole community!

Thank you so much to everyone involved, the vet team, the sponsors, the owners! Together we are making the world a better place, one dog and cat at the time!

In case you wonder why Have-a-Heart Walvis Bay and Ocean Conservation Namibia teamed up, have a look below :-)

Despite helping other species, we are all passionate humans and animal love and welfare have no boundaries, and we always look out for each other.

While feeding one of the feral cat groups at the harbour, the Have a Heart volunteer noticed a seal with a plastic strap around its neck. Realising the urgency of the situation as this plastic strap could be fatal for the seal, the fantastic OCN team was notified. They immediately went out and managed to remove the strap. Please look at their videos about the fabulous work they are doing!

Teaming up with OCN means more eyes to make sure animals in distress get the help they need are around, and we couldn't be happier about it!

Thank you - together we are making the world a better place!

Everyone, meet Lulu, our second emergency C-Section girl from last weekend.

Lulu is a much loved dog from Rehoboth and when she had trouble giving birth on Saturday, her owner immediately contacted AANWO vet clinic in tears.

Thanks to Animal-Kind International and the very awesome Penny and Dr Rakel from AANWO, Lulu and her two already born babies were rushed to the clinic where Lulu had her emergency C-Section.

Sadly three of her unborn babies had already died, but one boy made it and Lulu went back home today and is now resting while looking after her three little ones.

Penny and Dr Rakel are constantly stepping up for Rehoboth's animals and they didn't hesitate a second to give up their free day for Lulu - true heroes

So happy she made it

So happy she made it

Giving birth to such huge puppies would have ended with her dying a slow agonizing death 🥺

Had she been spayed earlier, none of this would have happened.
Spaying her would have prevented this painful, very risky and expensive situation 🥺.

But for now we are happy that we can tell you that she has survived the operation and is waking up 🐶.

And she'll never have to have puppies again 🥳👍.

Thank you Cveta from Southern Cross Veterinary Practice for sacrificing your Sunday to save this doggy 🙏🙏. We are very grateful that you are always there to help the animals.

We save lives through sterilisation of the pets of people with a very low or no income and we trap-neuter-return feral cats.

Because sterilisation is the solution.

We depend on donations.

Therefore we unfortunately do not have the funds to help all.

Please spread the word and consider supporting our work to help animals in need. 🐾 🩷

What a crazy weekend we had!

One of the many reasons we say spaying a dog before having puppies is to prevent suffering. This weekend, not only one dog but two struggled with giving birth. This beautiful girl in Walvis Bay and Lulu from Rehoboth couldn't give birth to their puppies and needed emergency C-sections!

Both are much loved by their families, and we are beyond happy and blessed to be able to help both dogs in tough times. This is only possible because of the donations Have a Heart gets from generous people. People who care about dogs and cats they most likely never meet but know they are loved by their families.

In addition, a sick dog is currently being treated at the clinic in Tsumeb, and the Have a Heart team in Omaruru is worried about a feral cat.

What is our dream for the future? We dream that dogs and cats can be spayed and neutered BEFORE needing emergency treatments like C-Sections, injuries due to fights or TVT treatments. Our dream is that every single dog and cat in Namibia has the privilege to visit a vet when sick or injured, and this is what we are fighting for.

Together with all of you—the fantastic supporters, the loving and responsible owners, the most amazing volunteers, and the passionate and caring vets—we ARE making the world a better place. For over 23000 dogs and cats in Namibia already - and counting!

See our next post for a happy update about the beautiful girl from Walvis Bay and tomorrows posts about Lulu

Update in the next post 🐶🐶
🚨 Emergency: A Dog in Trouble During Labour

Today, we are doing what we can to help this little dog struggling with severe labour complications. The puppies are stuck and won't come out.

Cases like this show how important it is to spay and neuter our pets.

Our Story

This is the official page of Have-a-Heart Namibia - a much needed project which provides free spay and neuter services for dogs and cats of low and no income families across Namibia in municipal townships and informal settlements, in some areas currently without any veterinary services whatsoever.

Have-a-Heart is a registered non-profit organisation in Namibia (21/2014/0378) which aims to reduce stray animal populations in a sustainable and humane way, thus eliminating the need for mass euthanasia.

Have a Heart is solely relying on donations and run by volunteers. All donations received are used for spay, neuter and necessary medication. Our volunteers go out of their way to improve the lives of animals in townships and informal settlements by providing advice and physical help to pet owners who would otherwise have no access to such information or service.
