Who is "Frozen Horsesemen Canada?" We are a community of private, small stallion owners who have come together to be able to offer their stallion semen worldwide. Collective transports are organized by the Collecting Center "Freeze and Breed, GER", which makes it possible to bring the stallion semen to the respective countries, because the costs would be too high for a single stallion. The frozen semen is then available directly in the respective countries to the local breeders, who no longer have to pay for international shipping. In this way, small, private breeders can make themselves independent of the large German studs.

Ok - finally getting some time to further explain the German Knabstrupper books and what this all means for North American breeders.

Last fall, you might recall that there was confusion over Westfalen’s ability to passport, inspect, grade and license horses for a Westfalen Knabstrupper book. There was some oversight from when the North American entity went from RPSI to Westfalen which meant the German agricultural department did not have “approval” from the Danish agricultural department for a specific Westfalen Knabstrupper book. This issue has been rectified and Westfalen’s Knabstrupper book is again fully functional.

There were some comments from breeders that Westfalen’s Knabstrupper book is somehow subpar. I’d like to clarify these comments as I think a lot of them come from a lack of understanding on not just the breed’s history in this country but how the “books” work:

1. One of the Westfalen judges who still handles much of the gradings in North America, was one of the first Knabstrupper judges for North America before KNN ever even offered gradings in this territory. He is an accomplished judge who primarily judges Warmbloods and is very capable of assessing a horse of another breed based off the breed standard that is outlined in the breed’s “book”.

2. Any of the German Knabstrupper books, Westfalen included, MUST follow the KNN’s rules and there are specific rule books that are governed by the agricultural departments to ensure there is consistency in one country vs another.

3. Regardless if you passport with KNN or Westfalen, you will STILL need to have mares (and stallions also need additional testing) presented for breeding book approval at the age of 3. Having a passport is just a document which shows where and when a foal was born, it’s parents and what “race” the foal is. That’s it. It is not future breeding approval.

4. A foal passported Westfalen Knabstrupper vs KNN vs another German Knabstrupper book has absolutely no difference in quality. One book is not “easier” than another. It’s *the* *same* *rules* and upholds the same requirements.

I’m a little tired of the narrative some breeders are putting out about “x” book is somehow more “pure” than another. While we are very fortunate to have KNN come to the USA every other year, having additional registries who can help assess young stock and breeding stock ONLY HELPS THE BREED ADVANCE IN NORTH AMERICA. THIS IS THE GOAL. Westfalen has a massive geographical reach for North America that will probably never - or at least not anytime soon - be achievable by KNN Denmark. This means areas that are otherwise difficult to get to for KNN will still be able to have youngstock and breeding stock judged and ANNUALLY vs every other year! This is a huge win for the breed and North American breeders.

KNN has not made any announcement when they plan to come to North America this year. It is assumed September/October and people are welcome to contact Ena/KNN directly to be added to the venue list for the 2022 tour:
