A British-owned African grey parrot named Nigel went missing for four years and returned speaking Spanish. According to The Independent, Nigel disappeared from his home in Torrance, California in 2010. When he was finally reunited with his owner, Darren Chick, in 2014, his British accent was gone and he had picked up fluent Spanish instead.

Nigel was discovered by a dog groomer named Julia Sperling, who noticed the parrot speaking Spanish phrases like “¿Qué pasó?” and even barking like dogs. Sperling, originally from Panama, suspected the bird had learned Spanish during his time away. According to Animals Around the Globe, Nigel was eventually traced back to Chick through a microchip and old pet store records, thanks to the efforts of veterinarian Teresa Micco.

The story took another twist when it was revealed that Nigel had spent part of his missing years with a Guatemalan family, learning Spanish from the grandfather who had adopted him. In the end, Chick returned Nigel to that family, recognizing the bond they had formed.

Yellow-naped Amazon chicks take flight in Guanaja, Honduras 💚
It’s been a successful breeding season for the Critically Endangered Yellow-naped Amazon, thanks to the dedicated work of the Green Island Challenge_Guanaja Green team.

With 30 protected artificial nests, around 50 chicks have successfully fledged and joined their wild parents in the forests of Guanaja. These parrots face serious threats from poaching for the illegal pet trade, but local conservation efforts are helping to turn the tide. In the past, many of these chicks would have been stolen from their nests long before they had a chance to fly free.

Green Island Challenge isn’t just protecting nests, they’re also empowering local communities. Last year, they brought parrot-focused environmental education to 7 of the island’s 8 schools, sparking awareness and inspiring the next generation of parrot protectors.

We’re proud to support this vital work to protect Yellow-naped Amazons, promote community engagement, and ensure a future for parrots in the wild.

(jc)

Wildlife Wonders: The Green wing Macaw

The green wing Macaw (Ara chloropterus) is one of the three largest macaw species in the Peruvian Amazon. It has a long, pointed tail, a red head and body, mostly blue wings with green upper wing coverts. Its white face is marked with distinctive red lines, making each individual as unique as a fingerprint.

From our canopy towers, you can spot them flying over the forest or tending to their nests during the breeding season (November to March) — one inside the nest, the other perched nearby, communicating with soft calls.

Would you like to watch them from above, right in the heart of the rainforest?
