We had a broody hen that wouldn't stop being broody no matter what we tried. Broody hens will sit on eggs all day and night waiting for them to hatch. The problem is, they won't eat or drink while sitting on the eggs and we were concerned about her health in this heat. Not to mention we have no rooster so the eggs she was sitting on, would never hatch.
We decided to get some chicks to make her think she hatched the eggs.
She was over the moon and has been the best mama to these chicks! Today, she took them out of the coop and crumbled up food for them to eat while keeping a watchful eye out. They have been a joy to watch and although we didn't need 6 more chickens, we're happy it turned out so perfect.

So as you may have noticed, we are not doing the Orange Farmer's Market this year. I started a new job in February and coupled with me in the final throws of my master's degree, it was just too much.
We are still selling honey though! We're hoping to spin a big batch in about 2 weeks so stay tuned, delicious honey is coming your way soon!

We lost 3 hives over the winter but we added some Sakatraz girls to the apiary today! Sakatraz bees are known for their high honey production, mild temperament and excellent overwintering abilities.
There was honey left in some of the failed hives so we'll have some honey available late May.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy new year. Also, with the 60 degree weather yesterday, all the hives were out and about! It's hard to tell in the picture, but it's always so exciting to know they're doing ok!

Did you get a chance to go to the Orange Country Fair this weekend? Did you see our award winning honey?
We still have a few jars left for purchase. We'll be at the farmer's market on Thursday so you can pick up some of our blue ribbon honey!

On the left is honey we harvested in early June. On the right is honey we harvested 2 weeks ago. Notice the color difference. The color of honey changes with the nectar source.
Early honey is pale colored and comes from the early nectar sources such as clover and heather. By the end of summer, bees feed on nectar from late blooming sources such as knotw**d, goldenrod, and sedum which produces a dark, molasses-like honey.
Every color has a distinct flavor but they're all equally delicious!

Just a reminder that there is no farmer's market this week due to the firefighters' carnival. We did pull a gorgeous super of honey today and we'll have some available when the market resumes on the 11th.
Check out the 3 different colors of honey on this one frame! It reminds me of the old Caldor logo (for those old enough to remember).

We will not be at the Farmer's market today. With the high temperatures we didn't get a chance to get into the hives and we have no more honey available. Hopefully we can get in sometime this week and we'll have more available when we come back August 11th.

Come visit us at the farmer's market today (from 4-7) and get the last of our early spring honey!

Started scraping some frames into the spiner tonight. Check out how pale and beautiful this early spring honey is! We remove the top layer of cappings, then put the frames into our spinner. Centrifugal force removes all the honey from the comb. We save our bees a lot of work by not destroying the comb and giving them back the frames to fill again.

We will once again have a booth at the Orange Community Farmer's Market this year. The Market starts on June 30 and runs every Thursday from 3:30-7pm. Unfortunately we won't be at the first market, but we'll resume on July 7.
This year we'll have honey, eggs, wax wraps, and hand rolled beeswax candles. We can't wait to see you at the market!
