Boundary Training Part 4
Some little hints and tips
🔸Start with one bed, nice and simple, then over time you can move it around and introduce new beds
🔸Anything could be a boundary once they know the cue and you have used a few different beds - a bench in the park, an area of the garden, a towel you take with you to cafes or pubs
🔸Reward your dog if they choose their bed on their own
🔸While on the bed, if they show signs of relaxing, or even changing position, reward
🔸Reward calmly and slowly. This is supposed to be an activity of calmness
🔸Multi task. Boundary training is easy to do while doing something else. Maybe at work sitting at your desk or while watching TV in the evening
That's it for the videos. There is lots more I could say, and I'll add some stories and future posts but these 4 videos give a good base to get a great boundary foundation.
Let me know how you get on.
Boundary Training Part 3
Introduce
🔸Duration
🔸Distance
🔸Distractions
Do these one at a time, not all at the same time!
Do really small increments, don't go too far or too long too quickly.
Keep that value on the bed.
Release regularly.
Be unpredictable and mix it up.
Some fun with a few puzzle games yesterday. Some are ones I've bought, others are home made from egg boxes or dish cloths! It's fun to be inventive and find new ways to challenge and entertain your dogs.
Some interesting observations
🔸Cactus managed the test tube game for the first time 👏
🔸Ava was a bit worried about the moving treat dispenser
🔸Didi was not worried about the moving treat dispenser 😂
🔸Bobby was a very quick learner but can give up quite easily
Boundary Training Part 2
🔸Introduce a word that means your dog should go to their bed. It can be place, mat, bed, anything really!
🔸Say the word after you have released them and they are heading back to the bed.
🔸Repeat a few times
🔸Reward generously for returning to the bed
🔸Reward less for the release
🔸Move around and cue them to their bed from different places.
The idea is, they stay on their bed until you say they can leave it. I prefer not to tell them to "stay", going to the bed is an implied stay.
Next we will start adding duration and some distance.
Check out stories and highlights for some trouble shooting.
Boundary Training Part 1
This is such a great skill to teach your dog. It can help develop calmness, prevent jumping up and counter surfing. Help in a multi dog household. So many uses.
🔸Start simple by getting your dog used to a bed.
🔸Feed the bed! Lots of high value food to the bed to make it clear where the value is.
🔸Introduce a release word so they know when they can get off.
🔸Move on to the next stage when they automatically return to the bed after release.
Keep sessions short initially. Use one bed, and then over time any bed or surface can be used.
Was hoping to use the new 3 minute reel feature but mines not working yet! So here's a post instead!
This was a little session with Didi, covering what I taught in my beginners class on Saturday. This is fairly typical of a session I do with my dogs, just a few minutes of a few different things.
We did
➡️ Orientation game
➡️ Follow me
➡️ Touch
➡️ Boundary games
➡️ Aeroplane feeding
➡️ Catch
Keep it short.
Keep it fun.
Love Ava and Didi playing. It didn't start like this! It's taken a while. Giving Ava space from the puppy and letting her decide when she's ready rather than trying to force them to be besties!
We knew when getting another dog Ava would probably find it a bit tricky... And she did. But every day they are getting on better and I couldn't be happier 😍😍
Didi has actually learnt really quickly when to stay out of Ava's face! Unlike Cactus, who still, 2 years on gets growled at by Ava every morning when he comes to say good morning! Ava is not a morning dog 😂😂
If you have multi dogs do they all get on?
Trying something different, a 7 day IGP Heel work course with @theschoolofcaninescience.
First session was great. I look arkward and Ava looks beautiful and graceful 😂😂
Love learning new things.
Good way to start a Monday. Training done ✅
This set up may look weird and more like a children's soft play area than a dog class 😂
But this was the life skills class this Saturday for our beginner dogs. Lots of unusual, novel, noisy, moving challenges to test and build their confidence. 🛹
All the dogs did so well and showed they were all confident pups. ❤️❤️
Watch out for the New Year Class dates.
Gorgeous walk this morning with ABCD 😍😍 Oh and J!
Just managed to get a photo with all 4 sitting!
A little paws up... Didi's first time... And won't be her last! She's already so much fun to train and play with. 😍😍
This is for scent class 😊
The start of a passive indication with a coin.
