We're excited to announce that we can now offer surgical procedures!

Thanks to collaboration with Caroline Langlois, a veterinary surgeon with premises in Mahón, Consulta Veterinaria Menorca we can offer a range of day-case surgical procedures, such as:
* spaying and neutering
* dental procedures
* hernia repairs
* lump/tumour removal
* eyelid surgery
* bowel and bladder surgery

If your pet requires surgery in the future, we will:
- provide you with an estimate of costs for the procedure
- provide you with pre-op information
- schedule an appointment to meet you in Mahón
- be responsible for your pet’s care, with Martin carrying out the surgery whilst your pet is monitored throughout by Caroline or Kerry
- discharge your pet back into your care later that day with appropriate pain relief and aftercare instructions

We’re pleased to be able to offer this important service but rest assured, our home visits will continue as normal.

A-Z of pet health conditions.

F is for fleas and parasites.

We are all familiar with the problems that fleas, ticks, and internal parasites can cause, but we have to move away from blanket-treating every pet every month, as has often been the case in the past.

We have to consider the impact of pesticides on the environment.

We must remember that some parasites can be extremely harmful and sometimes prove fatal to pets. Parasites also pose a risk to human health, so strategic treatment of both external and internal parasites is required.

Treatment of pets needs to be based on the risk; a single elderly cat that doesn't hunt or venture far will have different treatment requirements than a multi-cat household of avid hunters.

Currently, we don't know if oral treatments are less harmful to the environment than topical treatments - more research is needed.

Get in touch if you would like to discuss your pet's parasite control.

E is for eye problems 👀

Early detection can prevent more severe complications

Pets feel pain like we do, and a sore eye can be extremely painful, so appropriate pain management is an important part of the treatment.

⚠️⚠️ Xylitol, a sweetener often used in chewing gum, sweets, and some brands of peanut butter, is now being labelled as ‘Birch Sugar’ or its food additive code ‘E967’.

Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs, and a small dog would only need to eat 1 or 2 pieces of gum for dangerous effects to occur.

Xylitol causes a rapid drop in blood-sugar levels and can also cause liver damage, so call us immediately if your dog has eaten anything containing xylitol.

English translation is in the comments. There are many ways you can help.

We go when we can, but more help is needed.

Thank you! 🐴

A - Z of pet health conditions

🦷 D is for dental disease.

Dental disease is more than just bad breath - it can lead to serious health risks.

Unchecked tartar and gum inflammation can cause:

☹️ painful infections
☹️ tooth loss
☹️ increased risk of heart, kidney and liver disease as bacteria spread through the bloodstream

What can be done to improve your pet’s oral health?

Preventative care ✔️

🦷 Regular dental check ups are important and this is something we check during the annual healthcheck before administering booster vaccinations.

🦷 A scale and polish under anesthetic may be necessary to remove tartar build up and remove any problem teeth.

🦷 Incorporate at-home care such as brushing teeth, offering dental chews or special kibble designed to reduce the build up of tartar.

Get in touch if you have any concerns.

It's a busy time of year for Santa's elves, and our Elfie was feeling a bit under the weather.

She thought she may have had a urine infection because her usual water intake had decreased as it's the season to drink Baileys!

The good news is that microscopic examination ruled-out infection and confirmed increased presence of snowflakes, resulting in a diagnosis of snowflakeitis.

A short spell of rest and increased warm water intake should do the trick and see her return to her important festive duties very soon 🥰❄️

A - Z of pet health conditions C is for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a common condition in older pets, particularly cats. Early detection is key to improving quality of life.

Signs to Watch For:
• Increased thirst and urination
• Weight loss and decreased appetite
• Vomiting or bad breath
• Lethargy and weakness
• Poor coat condition

Treatment Options:
While CKD can’t be cured, it can be managed:
1. Dietary changes: Prescription renal diets help reduce kidney workload.
2. Hydration: Often when first diagnosed, it is necessary to administer intravenous or subcutaneous fluid therapy to flush the kidneys. Access to fresh water day and night is essential.
3. Medications: To control nausea and blood pressure.
4. Regular vet monitoring: Blood tests, BP monitoring and urine checks are useful tools to monitor the condition.

If you notice these signs, contact us to arrange an appointment.

🐕 Let them sniff! 🐕

Sniffing is your dog's way of making sense of the world around them and it provides lots of mental stimulation, which can help keep their brain healthy as well as their body.

10 minutes of sniffing is equivalent to an hour long walk in terms of enrichment for your dog.

Let them sniff! 🐾🐾
