Arlo’s a bit overexcited that we have a new dog in the house. Rocky is not over impressed with the great lump 😁

Left over cardboard packaging makes for an awesome, cheap bit of enrichment. Dissecting is a natural behaviour, if you allow an outlet for it you can help prevent unwanted destruction

Adolescent dogs don’t have the best impulse control (there’s my understatement for the day 😁) I really don’t need Arlo’s nose in the dishwasher while I’m trying to load it, so I’m teaching him to back up a bit and give me some space.

Importantly, I’m not asking for a sit or down it stay. I’m just rewarding him for giving the dishwasher some space, whatever position he puts himself in. I’m effectively teaching a ‘settle’, as you would if you were taking your dog to a cafe.

Reward what you want to see more of. Dogs are more than capable of working that out. And the more they’re rewarded, the more likely they are to repeat the behaviour

For some reason Arlo really likes this. This video is maybe the 4th time we did it.
I’m just trying to get him to be a little bit aware of his back end and how to move it. The length he is, he really doesn’t need to move anything other than his head to reach the treat!
Also, using muscle groups in a slightly different way is as good for him physically as it would be for us.
Using his brain to figure it out is beautifully mentally enriching too. So much so that he’s fast asleep as my feet 5 minutes later 💕

Arlo’s not a fan of the thunderstorms today. Inside on his blanket ok. Outside with that big noise is not! Thankfully, all our dogs are pretty non-reactive to thunderstorms, fireworks etc. as long as they are in the house, doors and windows closed. Inside the house is a safe space, they’ve got us and each other 💕 Today is not a good day for long walks. The noise is terrifying for some dogs and away from home they could bolt with fear. Today’s a home day, inside in the safe and warm

All the dogs have had chews. Stinky tripe 🤢 which they all love, and are high value enough that Arlo can get a bit grumpy with a couple of the other dogs. So, he has his outside, to keep everyone’s stress levels to a minimum. But, as he finishes his so quickly, he asks to come back in before everyone else is done.

This gives me a great chance to practice him leaving the rest alone while they finish. The most important thing here is that I don’t want him bothering the others and then have to ‘correct’ that (stressful for them and harder for him). I want to show him a better way to behave in the situation. So much so that it becomes his default behaviour when there are chews about.

All I’m asking is that he stays close to me and leaves the others alone. I didn’t put him in a down stay, he chose how he was most comfortable, I just asked that he stayed near me (so I can reinforce him and keep an eye on him)

Rest assured, left to his own devices he would be going round the other dogs, lurking too close, stressing them out and making them feel that they have to defend their chew. Teaching him an alternative behaviour saves all of that and keeps a much more harmonious house. We’ll, as much as possible with this many strong personalities!

Adolescence. A period of development that everyone should know about, but few people seem to. We all know, and expect, the puppy stage to be hard work, but few people are prepared for the teenage months. This is the time when so many dogs go up for rehoming, or find themselves handed in to shelters. Why?

Hormones. Females gearing up for their first season, males flooded with testosterone. And just like in human teenagers this can have a big effect on their behaviour.

The brain is rewiring at this age. From as early as 6 months until up to 2 years the puppy brain goes through massive changes causing fluctuation in behaviour.

The body has also gone through a period of rapid growth, leaving you with an adult sized dog with a puppy brain. A puppy that has to relearn how to use this great big body. Even something as simple as a sit, they have to approach it differently, and may regress a bit in their training.

Breed will out. Adolescence is often a time when you will see breed specific characteristics come into play. Herders start to chase movement, guardian breeds start taking on the world. And these behaviours can be quite exaggerated for a period.

It’s important to remember that this period will pass, but you may need some help through it. Understanding and managing the environment can be crucial. And with some dogs, it’s really not easy.

This week, Arlo’s had one day where he felt he needed to take on all the other dogs in the house. Play with his usual best mate tipped dangerously close to going over the edge a couple of times. I did have to remove him and keep contact with the others to a minimum for one day (and there will be other bad days!)

Happily, for the time being at least, normal equilibrium has returned 💕

25/01/2022

The knock in effect of teaching Arlo how is like him to behave when he’s loose with the birds (post yesterday ) is that the chickens and ducks have also learned. They have no need to move out of his way, or worry that he’s coming through. Positive results all round 💕

So, my car finally left the mechanic’s after nearly 5 months 🤦‍♀️ Unfortunately, during that time I’ve not been able to take Arlo anywhere other than the surrounding countryside, which has not been great for his socialisation and exposure to the real world.

Today, we hit the mean streets of Femes to break him back in gently, few cars, few people, but lots of smells and interesting sights.

I’m hoping that the time we’ve missed won’t have too much of an effect on his development. If this morning is anything to go by, I think we’ll be ok 😅

Guys, I’d say very little chance of him sharing. And even less of him leaving any 😁

In today’s instalment of what it’s like to be a hormonal Bardino, Arlo’s so far:

Barked at one of the guys who works for my husband, who he sees every day, because it was a bit dark out there this morning.

Barked at himself, and me, in the full length bedroom mirror, that’s been in the same place since he arrived 6 months ago.

Barked at Daddy because he could only see the top half of him behind the sofa.

It’s a tough place in his little brain at the moment 😁💕

Adolescence 😅

14/10/2021

Training without building frustration (actually what we’re covering in a group class tomorrow ) Holding a position can be very boring and very frustrating, especially for a young, adolescent dog. Here, Arlo has just completed 2 sits with duration and when I ask for a 3rd he lets me know that he’s getting fed up. So, we switch position and make it a bit easier. Always take your cue from your dogs. They’re not machines, and how they’re feeling is the most important thing
