DOG TALK TUESDAY: Stalking

Stalking behavior is part of the predatory sequence. It typically includes a focused hard stare, a head lowered, sometimes the body is crouching down, and a slow, quiet walk towards something or someone OR holding still in place.

This behavior has been bred to be exaggerated in certain breeds of hunting dogs. But for the purposes of behavior in our pet dogs, I wanted to bring it up. While our pet dogs may often stalk small animals such as birds and squirrels, they do sometimes stalk other dogs (especially on leash walks) and yes I’ve even seen dogs stalk people. And this is NOT a behavior that you want to take as cute or friendly! If this behavior is displayed towards other dogs or people, I recommend to interrupt it immediately.

I often hear about dogs on walks who will “stalk” another dog on leash and then eventually when they meet nose to nose their interactions are “fine.” But even in those cases, I recommend not to allow it. The stalking behavior can be seen as threatening from the view point of the other dogs, causing them to become defensive once they get nose to nose. Also, I find that a lot of younger adolescent dogs tend to stalk other dogs on walks, and as they grow into social maturity, it can absolutely turn into aggression on the leash when that tension and anticipation is encouraged over and over again.

So when it comes to other dogs and people, don’t let it continue.

As always, when reading body language we have to remember to read it like we would read a sentence. Understand that it’s all the words together that create the meaning of a sentence, not one word alone. Thereby we also need to take all of the dog’s body language signals combined to create a meaning, and not focus on one single body part by itself.
