Support kill pounds- odd statement isn't it, but take a moment to read.

Before I knew anything about dog rescue, before I took in my first dog, before I took the time to learn, and educate myself, I thought, like many people that kill pounds were bad places with heartless people working there.
We have all seen the images of dead dogs laid out on the floor all down the hallway. I, like so many people thought how could they do that? how could they kill dogs? why couldn't they save them all?
However, I was so wrong, I had not realised, or understood what they are up against, and have to deal with every day. Since working with these places, I have a far better understanding of how it works, and how they do their jobs. The abuse these workers take every day is not ok, and is un justified, and people should be ashamed.

“Kill pounds” are brick and mortar buildings, required by law, to take in all the strays collected off the streets. All owner surrenders, and all animals seized by the police. Unlike rescues or charities these places can’t say “no, I’m sorry we don’t have (space, time, or money"
Therefore, we shouldn't be angry at these places, we should be angry at the idiots, breeding, and advertising puppies for stupid money. At the idiots that rented somewhere to live, but didn't check with the landlord if pets were allowed. Be angry at the couple who got their puppy five years ago, included them in their baby announcement, but now claim they’re “heartbroken they can’t give them the life they deserve.” Be angry at the person giving away free puppies on Facebook, to anyone that comments, from their unwanted litter, because they couldn't be bothered to neuter their dogs. Be angry at your coworker who bought that cute mini fluff ball, that (insert any breed here) doodle, or that next craze mixed breed online who couldn’t be bothered to do the bare minimum to check on the living conditions of her puppy’s mom and instead put stupid money into the hands of an animal abuser via PayPal.

These are the people you should be angry with, not the people trying to help, and be part of the solution. Take the time, educate yourself, you may be surprised what you find out!

Do you like it when people wander over and grab a chip off your plate, or a sip of your wine.
Do you like it when people take your stuff without asking?

No...... then why should your dog have to put up with it!

Resource guarding is so common, and something you need to understand.

We all guard our resources, it’s a natural reaction to a threat of something we value being taken away.

It’s essential for survival and dogs or other animals would not survive in the wild if they didn’t guard their resources.

We also don’t get to decide what’s valuable and what’s not – different things have different value to different dogs and at different times.

Food is usually the most common, but toys, furniture, different items, places, or even a certain person are all things that may be seen as a valuable resource.

A dog turning their head away, freezing, a hard stare, whale eye, moving away, growling or snapping may quickly escalate into a serious bite in an attempt to protect that valuable possession.

Punishing or forcing a dog to give something up is probably one of the worst things to do.

Resource guarding is rooted in the emotion of fear – the fear of that resource being taken away.

Punishment and force further increase that fear, which only increases and reinforces the need to protect that resource.

When a dog is guarding food or an object, we can change the negative emotion of that fear into a positive one by swopping or trading something that has a similar or higher value than what the dog has.

This is one of the most effective ways to address resource guarding of objects as it works at the root cause of the behaviour by changing the emotional response.

A dog resource guarding a person is more complicated to address. A full history of the individual dog, family dynamics, attachment styles, situation and environment all have to be assessed before planning and working on a solution.

Resource guarding can usually be prevented, managed and addressed and by starting early, understanding why dogs feel the need to resort to this behaviour and doing what we can to prevent it from happening in the first place.

This old dog came in over the weekend... neglected, hungry, infected and unloved 😒.... thankfully bloods showed nothing serious.

Many people are nervous about adopting direct from abroad... This has come about due to bad rescues, sending sick dogs, dogs with major behaviour issues, offering no support or advise.

I can proudly say that my rescue is not like that... Julie adopted from me, she was so nervous when she first contacted me this is what she has to say on the process :)

I'm Tired, i'm tired of it all at the moment... this feeling will pass it always does, however, the compassion fatigue is real, so bear with me if I take even longer to answer you, or ignore you entirely.

RESCUE IS HARD. It is unforgiving. It is a lifestyle that I have chosen, so I get up every day, despite what is thrown at me via animals or people.
People believe I cuddle puppies and play with dogs all day but that is not reality. I deal with public hate, the juvenile attacks from other rescuers, so many lies, disgruntled potential adopters when we choose a different home because it is the right choice for that dog, daily financial stress, and worry, heartache, loss, and pain.

The financial strain is real, donations are down 65% on last year. I understand I really do, many are struggling, but I really don't know what to do.... everything is rising from feed to transport costs....

There is no let up, no day off, no helping hands, so all I can do is just keep swimming, just keep doing what I do..... until I can't do it mentally, physically or financially anymore.... 😪
