Hi Everyone. Are you looking for a great treat to reward your dog?. Try the recipe below. However, this should only be used for dogs and puppies over 6 months old. This is a high value treat. If you cut it into cubes and freeze it in batches, it will last for ages.

Ingredients

450 g lamb or ox liver
450 g self raising flour
3 eggs
Milk or water

Method

Crack the eggs into a measuring jug
Add an equal volume of milk or water to the measuring jug and whisk
Blend the liver in a food processor
Add the flour and the egg mixture and blend to a sponge consistency
Empty contents into a greased baking tray or cake tin.
Bake at 180 degrees for 35-45 minutes
Allow to cool

09/05/2021

Hello everyone. We are looking at starting dog training on Sunday 16th May at 11.00. As we have changed our training we would like you to join us for our first session without your dogs.As we have to consider covid we will need to know if you are attending so that we can organise each session. Please bring a drink with you,and a mat to sit on.We would appreciate it if you could wear a mask. Please email me : pamboyson @ gmail.com if you would like to join both Louise and I on Sunday

05/04/2021

We had hoped to start dog training next Sunday but, sadly, it's not going to happen as Lauzun is further than 10 kilometres for both Pam and me. By the time we get the opportunity it will probably be too hot to work. Very frustrating. Take care and we hope to see you - eventually!!!

06/01/2021

Hello Everyone,

We hope you had a lovely (if limited) Christmas and New Year. Sadly, we can't see the club getting back together for some time yet. Cross your fingers and hope we can start up again - maybe - in late Spring or early summer. Meanwhile many of your dogs are missing the company of other dogs and Pam is trying to arrange a walk in Lauzun so that they can all race round together again. Stay safe and we hope we can meet up with you soon.

06/01/2021

Hi Everyone. I'm hoping to organise another dog walk.If you are interested then please either private message or WhatsApp me and we can fix a place date and time. Xx

30/10/2020

Hello Everyone. Sorry but Lockdown is with us again and, as a consequence, we must cancel dog training until further notice. I hope you all have a few things to practise (only ten minutes at a time) and we look forward to seeing you again - eventually!!!

03/10/2020

In view of the weather today and the forecast for tomorrow, dog training is cancelled. Hope to see you next week.

01/10/2020

Yesterday afternoon, in glorious warm sunshine, a group of lovely volunteers began the renovation of our agility equipment. We now have beautifully painted weave poles and pretty much everything else is covered in grey primer (that includes Mackie who looks as if he's trying to be a dalmatian with grey spots on his back). It was a fun afternoon - the addition of six dogs just adding to the excitement. A big, big thank you to Pam, Sandy, Angela, Dave, Chris, Pete and Melanie for all your help. Next time we'll paint what's left. I had two very tired dogs at the end of the day, which is always good!!

25/09/2020

This Sunday, 27th September, we are moving to Les Hirondelles at Lauzun. Lesson times are also changing - the puppy class will be at 11 a.m., intermediates at 12, advanced at 1 p.m. After we have refurbished our agility equipment, we shall also be starting an agility class at 2 p.m. Watch this space, folks.

20/09/2020

As long as the promised storm stays away, dog training is on today. See you there.

01/09/2020

Hi Everyone, Dog training is restarting on Sunday 13th September. For those of you who are new to us, please bring treats for your dog and a mat for them. Looking forward to seeing everybody.

26/07/2020

Forecast is for cloud today so dog training is on!!! It'll be at the usual times - 2.00, 3.00 and 4.00 p.m. Hope to see you there.

18/07/2020

33 degrees tomorrow so - sadly - no dog training again. Hope to see you all soon.

11/07/2020

Apparently it's going to be 30 degrees tomorrow, so dog training is cancelled. Can you all keep your eyes peeled for an empty barn or a shady field that we might be able to use? It would be good if we could keep going in spite of the weather. Thanks.

11/07/2020

According to Meteo France, it's going to be 30 degrees tomorrow. Much too hot for dog training. So, hopefully, we will see you all next week - weather permitting. Please can you all be on the lookout for a shady field or an empty barn that somebody might be willing to let us use, so that we can continue without being quite so dependent on the weather?

20/06/2020

Just a reminder that we're having a drop-in at Barking Mad tomorrow, Sunday, from 2.30 to 5.30. Cakes and drinks will be provided. All are welcome.

11/06/2020

Pam, Suzy and I have decided it's time to restart Barking Mad Dog Club. But, as we've been isolating for so long, we thought we would have a drop-in session on Sunday 21st June from 2.30-5.30. There won't be any training, but it will allow us to meet up, have hot/cold drinks and cake and the dogs can have a play with their friends. Even if you don't belong to the club at the moment, feel free to join us with your pooch. We would love to see all our friends and any potential new friends.

08/05/2020

Hello Everyone. I hope you've survived lockdown intact. However, although there will be an easing up of restrictions on Monday, I think we all need to take care. I'd like your opinions on whether to restart the dog club, with a few extra rules. Obviously observe social distancing, use the handsprays provided before having your cup of tea and avoid touching anyone else's dog but your own if possible. If you find these rules acceptable, we can start up again at 2 p.m. on Sunday 17th May. Let me know what you think.

15/03/2020

Sorry folks. Things have moved on since I wrote yesterday and we are now in Stage 3 of the attempts to stop this pandemic. As a consequence, we are cancelling dog training until further notice. It's a shame as it's such a lovely day today, but I think health considerations need to take priority. I'll let you know when we're starting again.

14/03/2020

Dog training is on this Sunday and it's supposed to be warm (19 degrees) and sunny. See you there.

13/03/2020

Hi Everyone. The welcome change in the weather probably means that we can have dog training on Sunday. However, in view of the impact of the coronavirus, would you prefer that we postponed dog training indefinitely. We will go with the majority verdict. Please let me know before by Saturday afternoon. Thank you.

Separation Anxiety - Fact vs Fiction

A long read but an excellent article. I learned so much from this.

Separation anxiety is something of a hot topic, something many trainers and behaviourists avoid like the plague and something widely misunderstood by the majority! So what IS it, and what ISN’T it. Separation Anxiety is used as an umbrella term to cover any anxiety based issues regarding separatin...

07/03/2020

I don't think it will come as any surprise to anybody that the field is waterlogged so there is no dog training tomorrow. Cross your fingers for next week.

29/02/2020

No dog training tomorrow - all the rain has left the field somewhat muddy!

Lewis Nicholls Dog Training

This is a good article and especially relevant to easily excitable dogs like the collie. This philosophy underpins most of the training we offer all dogs at Barking Mad. Calm owners, simple rules and less crazy. Hopefully!

The problem with a lot of dogs in today’s society is chronic stress.

We put them in situations that are too stressful whilst expecting far too much of them and very little from ourselves in terms of training.

Another problem we then add is too much crazy stuff (constant ball throwing etc) with very few rules and little to no training that involves calmness and problem solving.

The crazy stuff in itself isn’t an issue. I play tug and throw balls for lots of dogs. But it can become a problem if we don’t spend some time teaching them that there are rules as well.

And contrary to popular belief, if your dog is bouncing off the walls, they unlikely need more exercise. The chances are they are constantly stressed and just can’t switch off. Stress isn’t always ‘bad’. Distress is the ‘bad’ stress and eustress is the ‘good’ stress in a nutshell. But too much of the good stuff isn’t good either. Constant crazy stuff (which is getting the eustress going) will just turn your dog into a wired machine. That’s not good. Unless you want them working all day long.

So mix up the crazy stuff with the calming stuff. I prefer to do much more of the calm stuff (some scent work training) and much less of the crazy stuff.

In fact some days I’ll skip the walk and just do some calming, problem solving training with the dogs. If I do then go for a walk it might just be a slow sniffy walk with no crazy or ‘fun’ stuff happening.

Loki loves chasing things which is to be expected. Him being a border collie and all. But I don’t want him just chasing things as soon as they move.

I also know it’s not hard to get a border collie excited, so I don’t need to add to much excitement for that to happen. However, I do know it will likely be harder for him to chill, so that’s why we are focusing a lot more on slow calming training, like indicating on a kong.

Less crazy, crazy. More trainy, trainy!
