International association Chaar Appaloosa Aim of association is to revive, preserve and popularise kyrgyz aborigine Chaar horse
(1)

In 2012
Munarbek Kuldanbaev started work on breeding Chaar horses, with the aim of reviving and making the Chaar horse known worldwide. The Chaar horse is known worldwide thanks to the film "True Appaloosa" directed by Conor Woodman and Munarbek. In 2022
Friends of Munarbek from France, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, USA decided to support him and share his mission, most of us participating

in his breeding program to increase the number of purebred Chaar horses and help him to make this horse known. The Chaar Appaloosa Association aims to recognise, safeguard, enhance and promote the Central Asian Chaar horse and the nomadic culture that accompanies it. We wish to mobilise and raise awareness among local communities in Central Asia and the general public. We are working on the recognition of this breed as the original strain of the Appaloosa horse. The Chaar horse represents both a heritage and a richness of Kyrgyz culture. Thanks to the support of a local association "Chaar Appaloosa Kyrgyzstan", we are contributing to the restoration of the Chaar horse through a breeding programme that is part of an ecological approach to preserving biodiversity. Winter time is most difficult period of the year for horses and for us too.
Our breeding program is going well and number of horses are growing and we need more hands to take care of them, for daily feeding, to train, to coral herds to the farm and for many other daily works in the farm.

We are looking for volunteers who are ready to join our team from January till March 2025.

The Kyrgyz Chaar Appaloosa horse is a unique breed known by film “True Appaloosa” directed by Conor Woodman. This horse is highly valued for its strength, endurance and agility, which make it ideal for long distance travel in the rugged mountain terrain of Central Asia. Moreover, the breed is known for its gentle nature, intelligence and loyalty, making it a beloved companion for riders of all ages and levels of experience. Unfortunately, this breed is facing several challenges, including habitat loss, and crossbreeding. As a result, preserving this breed is crucial. The International Chaar Appaloosa Horse Association aims to revive the endangered Chaar Appaloosa horse breed through breeding programs and cultural events, the association seeks to preserve and promote these horses for future generations.

We are inviting everybody to join our efforts by donating, purchasing CHAAR merchandise, adopt foals or participate in our chaar expedition. Do not forget that even small amount makes a big difference.

Chance observations by an Appaloosa breeder in New Zealand have led to a fascinating debate whether the revered breed was brought to America by the Spanish – or they came from Kyrgyzstan.

Sarah Gottshall: Adam connected me to Munarbek and I reached out to him with my idea, and was pleased to receive a response the same day. In true Kyrgyz hospitality, he invited me to travel to Toktogul so we could meet, visit his farm and the horses, and discuss our ideas for collaboration. The next week, I found myself traveling the ~12 hours from where I live in Karakol, through Bishkek, and on to Toktogul.
I arrived in Toktogul late in the evening; Adam and I had planned to camp at the farm where the Association’s horses spend the winter safely tucked away from wolves, but as it was dark and raining...

This spring has provided us with numerous advantages. Ample rains have nourished the grass on the lower pastures of Tyan Shan mountains, enabling the horses to gain weight rapidly. The foaling season of our indigenous chaar horses is in full swing, and each visit to pasture brings with it an exciting anticipation of seeing the newborn foals. It's a magical moment that's challenging to convey in words.
meantime herds will remain on the lower pasture until June. Typically, at the end of May, in Ketmen Tobo valley, we experience a week of stormy weather, and the higher pastures become blanketed in snow. This unpredictable and treacherous moment demands extreme caution, as horses left on those slopes risk sliding down and suffering fatal injuries. Sadly, we learned this lesson in 2021 when we lost 10 horses.
Since that tragic experience, we've become exceedingly vigilant, keeping the horses on the lower pasture until the beginning of June, despite their annoyance with flies.
Meanwhile, our local team is diligently preparing for the upcoming winter of 2025.

For the upcoming season, we are planning to purchase 15 tonnes of barley and 1500 bales of dried grass. this amount of fodder will help us to keep our herds in pens during the nights and protects them from wolves attacks.

Our estimated budget for the coming year is 40,000 euros, which will be allocated to purchasing fodder, veterinary care, annual wages for horsemen , restoring old pens, building new ones, and acquiring a lorry for horse and forage transportation. I believe, with support of each of you, as usual we will be able to reach our goals to continiue suistanable kyrgyz chaar horse revival breeding program.

I'd like to express my sincere gratitude to all of you for being with us and supporting our efforts over the years. What we're doing is incredibly important, and together, regardless of where you reside on this planet, we are a formidable force.

For those who have recently joined us, I'd like to remind you that our budget is formed through:
1. Donations: you can make a one time donation or choose a formula of monthly donation starting from 10 euro. I would like also inform that for citizens of France has a tax refunding advantages on donations. know more

2. Participation in our accelerated breeding program: know more

3. Purchasing our CHAAR merchandise: it will take couple of minutes to choose a CHAAR item, to fill up address form and make a payment through secured payment system. withing few days your CHAAR item will be delivered to your door, wherever you live.
