You've probably already seen or heard that forage should form the basis of your horse's diet. But do you know why? ๐ง
First of all, forage is the best source of energy for your horse. His digestive system is designed to digest and assimilate fibre (small stomach and large intestines). โก๏ธ
For horses with low needs or who don't work very hard, forage (hay, grass, etc.) will be more than enough to cover your horse's energy requirements (although be sure to provide a suitable supplement for minerals, vitamins and trace elements) ๐ฅ
Even for horses that need concentrates, forage should remain the staple and make up at least 50% of the ration โ๏ธ
As well as providing nutrients, forage helps to meet one of the horse's fundamental needs: continuous eating. In fact, it is the type of feed that takes the horse the longest to eat and meets its need to feed for most of the day and night ๐ฝ
Finally, forage will help keep your horse's intestinal flora healthy and as we have seen, this flora is closely linked with your horse's health. ๐ฆ ๐
