A horse's muscles make up a significant portion of its body weight, with estimates suggesting that the majority of a horse's muscle mass, often referred to as "locomotory muscles," accounts for over 90% of its total muscle mass, making it a large part of its overall body composition.

A horse has approximately 700 muscles in its
These muscles are primarily designed for strength, speed, and endurance, allowing the horse to run and carry weight effectively.

Important muscle groups in a horse include the back muscles, shoulder muscles, lumbar muscles, and hind leg muscles.
Gluteal muscles:
The gluteal muscles, located in the hindquarters, are considered particularly powerful and play a key role in propulsion.
So if your horse has issues, don't ignore the fact that it's possibly muscle ones. As humans, we have lots of muscle issues; tight ones, sprained ones etc..and we work these horses hard sometimes.

Get your horse and Equine muscle specialist out to check for any issues

Trying to put it simply: Fascia.!
Myofascial lines on a Horse. The entire structure is covered in fascia and where injury occurs it can show up as lines; If there's blockages (once blood circulation has improved, they can show up then. They ae there to protect the muscular skeletal structures. Yesterday Ludo came out in fascia lines at the end of his massage. Fascinating to see how he was then massaged in that area using nyofascial release techniques. This is the before and after photos; once I worked on him. Great example.!

The Pelvic Tilt. Make sure your horse is aware of your position and rub the top of his tail to relax and reassure. Put your hands either side of the horse and scratch downwards towards the hamstrings this is to relax and get the reflex activated. Performing the pelvic tilt will engage the core and is an excellent method to initiate the contraction of the major and minor core muscle groups. If your horse is known to kick. Please don't do it. Some videos attached of my clients this week. Some good demos.

I've been talking to a lot of my clients about the Hyoid and mechanisms of the face this week and in my clinics. I focus a lot on the horses face when massaging. It's complex and allows the horse to trust and relax into you. Don't forget the head works hard.

Sometimes as therapists; we need to make a call when the horse needs specialist attention, such as chiropractor or Osteopath treatment first. The owners did the right call and got someone out. The Horse had acute pelvic issues!? Trust your therapist.
