This pair fairly cheered me up today 😍 It's just lovely having Josie back from her holidays. Archie, on the other hand, is not allowed sticks because he obsesses over them. However, if there is a stick to be found in a mile radius, this guy will find it. And if there aren't any sticks, he'll dig up a tree root 😅 His wee face was so confused when he realised he couldn't jump into the car with it ❤️

Annnnd because rabbits are never straight forward... This dude is coming into work with me at the vets to see a bunny doctor. Fingers crossed it's just weird swelling and the abscess isn't refilling... 🤞🏻😥 (not holding out much hope for this outcome...)

I popped into The Wee Spotty Dog this weekend for some of Frank's absolute favourite chews - goats horns! He isn't especially fussed with antlers and nothing else lasts five minutes... Except these 😁🐐

I'm starting to think I might be cursed...

This is Simon, my own bunny. Simon is what my granny would have called a "wee besom" 😂 He is a really grumpy little fella with no front teeth, who likes to ride the roomba hoover into battle at 3am.

I checked all five rabbits over head to toe on Wednesday and they were 100% fine. Fast forward to this afternoon and Simon had a huge abscess under his wee chin. I'm going to assume this was possibly thanks to a small nibble from Maureen who is a bit of a floor shark but also only really likes Simon out of all living things in the universe 🤷🏼‍♀️ The heart wants what the heart wants!

It has been lanced and drained and will be properly cleaned out under anaesthetic on Monday because rabbit abscesses are a pest to treat properly and often come back if you don't nuke them. He's got antibiotics and pain killers until then. Massive thank you to Ardene House for squeezing him in at the end of the day ❤️

Sorry Simon. Today sucked for you 🐰

Dog mutilation: three men have been jailed after they cropped three puppies' ears

➡️Here at Veterinary Voices UK we are aware on the growing trend and market for dogs with cropped ears.

Since the release of a documentary back in 2021 highlighting the distressing and illegal UK activity, the market is still sadly thriving.

These men are unfortunately in the minority of those getting sanctions for their actions.

It's time to Stop The Crop!

➡️Ear cropping is unnecessary mutilation.
➡️It is done for no other purpose other than aesthetics.
➡️There are no proven health benefits to this procedure.
➡️It is illegal in the UK - for good reason.

Heartbreaking:

💬 “Two puppies were found bleeding with stitches in their ears and were hardly breathing. Another puppy was found with the same injuries hidden behind a sofa. A further three puppies were in the property but had not had the procedure.”

➡️ Sadly dogs can experience behavioural, psychological and physiological effects from this. They are unable to express natural body language, they can experience aversion to their ears and face being touched and surgery sites can become infected.

How can I help?

✅ Help disseminate good information on this illegal procedure
✅Continue to educate
✅Speak out against celebrity endorsement
✅Do not buy or import cropped eared dogs
✅Report suspicious activity
✅Report sales of very young dogs with cropped ears
✅Lobby the government or support appropriate petitions

This pair never fail to make me laugh. They are a brilliant double act with all of their shenanigans. In the distance, we see Holly in her natural habitat, lying down, getting ticks and waiting for something worth getting up for. Millie is up front, waiting for snackos. Every biscuit must be accounted for 😅

Raise your thumper if you're having a mega moult? 😅

Meet Noir 🖤 Noir really doesn't love being groomed. Brushing? No thanks. Nail clip? No way. Scent glands? HAHAHAHA. But we did it and she must feel soooo much better.

Lots of rabbits are having really severe moults this year - presumably due to the extreme heat we've had. Can rabbits ingest hair? Yeah, sure - a regular amount - as long as they are eating lots of hay, are well hydrated and moving about lots. Rabbits aren't made to ingest as much hair as we have bred certain breeds to have. They need some help. I was super happy to show Noir's humans different brushes and techniques to practice to help her get through this moult.

I *am* really busy but I *will* make time to see rabbit grooming clients because it can be a genuine welfare issue if it's not addressed 🐰❤️

🌈 It has been a really emotionally and physically draining week for me. The family said a last goodbye to a special, four legged friend who has a special place in all of our hearts. I apologise to anyone that's had to wait for a reply. I'm doing my best 🌈

With that said, this gorgeous lot are just some of the animals who have made the last couple of weeks happy. I'm so lucky that every animal I care for is an absolute delight - as well as all of their owners being lovely. It means the world to me that people trust me with the most important little creatures in their life because I know how few people I really trust with my pets ❤️

🧊 Cooling products 🧊

Amidst the current heatwave, it may not come as a surprise to you that we are receiving a huge increase in calls regarding cooling products.

We wanted to reassure owners that whilst there is a potential risk of gastrointestinal obstruction if large pieces are ingested, these products do not contain any toxic components.

Enzo's owner called the Animal PoisonLine recently after he was caught chewing on a plastic ice block. He had managed to pierce the block and expose some of the liquid within. After some quick thinking from his owner, Enzo remained well after his encounter and his owner sent us over this gorgeous picture of him - isn't he handsome!

🐶🧊 Folks, it's perfectly safe to give your healthy dog ice cubes. That Facebook post is absolute rubbish. Ice cubes, frozen treats and frozen Kongs are a fab way to keep your fit and well pooch cool. 🧊🐶

🥵 If your dog has heat stroke, don't give them ice. Get them wet and take them straight to the vet. While we're at it, lemon juice 🍋 will not prevent heat stroke in any way and if I catch anyone even thinking about putting ice cubes near their dogs back passage... Social media really does have a lot to answer for! 🙄😅

Can dogs have ice cubes? There's a lot of misinformation circulating on this topic and we’re here to clear that up.

Meet Archie - the flippin' liability and tick magnet 😂❤️ This boy has energy to burn! Because of this energy, we've been going places that he can have a really good explore on the long line while working on recall - which is currently non-existent.

Please note, Archie is tangled here because he was sniffing for a biscuit in the long grass. He's a super smart dog and can 9/10 times untangle himself when he's finished the very important biscuit search. But he did look silly here 🤣

But seriously. This hit 24 degrees this afternoon. I wouldn't drag my own dogs for an hours walk in this heat, so I wouldn't do it to yours.

The pavement is boiling. Dogs don't wear shoes. Dogs can't sweat. Dogs rely on humans to make sensible decisions for their welfare. I will make every effort to take dogs to forest or grass paths in this weather. When it's this hot, a 20min pootle for a p*e and a poo followed by sniffy games in the garden or cool house is what our dogs need. If required, I'll even hose them down with cool water from my dog shower to help keep them cool.

I just bought a dog paddling pool for Frank, Merlot and their puppy pal, Callie. I'm sure it'll last 5 minutes, but it'll be fun. Stay cool, humans and hot dogs ☀️🐶

Hello lovely people! I've had a super busy week and it isn't over. I'm working all weekend at the vets, so won't be free to reply to messages or emails unless super urgent.

I'm taking Monday and Tuesday off (despite working Tuesday night at the vets 😅) to try and recharge a little and spend some quality time with loved ones. I'll get back to messages on my return 👍🏻

It's just too hot out there for dogs like Holly to go a walk 🔥🥵 It's 3.30pm and my car is saying 21 degrees outside. Instead of a walk today, I hosed Holly off in the garden with my wee portable shower and played some sniffing games in the long grass. This means that Holly has had some good stimulation without having to exert herself in the heat. Her sisfur, Millie, came for a short, shaded woodland walk with loads of streams to paddle in. Happy dogs ❤️🐶
