I provide chiropractic assessments and treatments to horses and ponies within Aberdeen and the surrounding areas. During my years as a vet I have developed a strong interest in orthopaedics and sport horses. I strongly believe that successful equine health and fitness is a team approach; involving vets, farriers, chiropractors and physiotherapists to enable your horse to perform at its potential a

nd to live a happy and long life. Due to my veterinary background I am able to tailor chiropractic treatments to your individual horse, ensuring that any ongoing niggles or veterinary issues are incorporated into the treatment and rehabilitation schedule.

A very frequently asked question.....should I box rest my horse??

Box rest in some circumstances is absolutely essential, such as suspected fractures or severe soft tissue injuries, however if your horse is just a little bit off it might not be the best course of action.

Recent research on complete rest/immobilisation in both horses and humans has shown that it can have detrimental effects!
In a matter of days there can be structural changes within bone and cartilage, affecting joint health.
Muscles are also negatively effected as they require constant use to maintain muscle mass and begin to atrophy with disuse. Because muscles provide approximately 80% of joint stabilisation they are vital in preventing musculoskeletal injuries and so it is important that rehabilitation programmes are tailor made to the injury as well as the amount of rest your horse has completed.

If you would like advice rehabilitating your horse and to know how chiropractic treatments could help improve your horses outcome then please give me a call for a chat!

Do you and your horse do carrot stretches???

🥕The humble carrot and the power of 5 ⭐️

Studies demonstrate that dynamic mobilisation exercises such as carrot stretches 🥕 will increase the size of the multifidus muscle - a primary back muscle that stabilises the spine.
Exercises were based on 5 stretches per day and 5 days per week.

Why is this important for you and your horse??

Stabilisation of the vertebrae of the spine is necessary for transmission of forces from the hind limbs i.e propulsion from you horses back end!

Take home message 📚

Work with your horse with carrot stretches to improve their core strength and then you can look forward to more propulsion 👌
