So, so chuffed with myself today! My brain managed to work out how to mount, together with more strength, Henry and I were on fire! 💪 I even asked if we could brave a trot next week. Jumps were up, tempting but will have to settle for some gear changes on the flat first! 😁

Anthelmintics

The scale of anthelmintic (wormer) use in horses and why we need to tackle this.

There are an estimated 847,000 horses in the UK (British Equestrian Trade Association’s 2019 National Equestrian Survey) and it is estimated that 1.1 million horse wormer doses were sold in 2018 (Rendle, 2021).

Why do we need to worry about anthelmintic resistance :

🪱 No new anthelmintics are being discovered or developed. We have a limited number of anthelmintics available and worms display resistance to many of the major anthelmintic groups.

🪱 Moxidectin and Praziquantel previously were 2 of the only anthelmintics for which resistance had not been reported. This is no longer the case. Worm resistance is now arising against these too.

🪱 Moxidectin (in Equest and Equest Pramox) is the only effective drug against encysted small redworm.

🪱 Praziquantel (in Equest Pramox) is one of only two effective drugs against tapeworm.

🪱 If widespread resistance develops to moxidectin and praziquantel, we won’t be able to treat severe worm burdens in horses in the future. Continued unnecessary use of these drugs will give rise to resistance.

Further reasons to avoid unnecessary anthelmintic usage :

💧Environmental contamination when excreted in faeces, affecting water sources, reducing biodiversity and insect populations (Wentworth & Robertson, 2020), particularly dung beetles.

🐴 Impact on horses gut health.

How to avoid unnecessary anthelmintic usage :

👍 Risk based approach to worming. In the UK, only 1 in 4 horses have a tapeworm burden high enough to require treating. Most horses do not have a large encysted small redworm burden. Therefore most do not require moxidectin and praziquantel.

👍 TEST for tapeworm and encysted small redworm with a blood sample or tapeworm saliva test.

👍 Regularly poo pick fields (at least 2x per week) to remove worm burden. This is far more effective than regularly administering anthelmintics (Herd, 1986).

👍 Quarantine and test new arrivals. Do NOT worm and immediately turn out.

👍 Rest pastures, co-graze with other species and avoid over-stocking.

🔊 And importantly SPREAD THE MESSAGE amongst horse owners about the value of diagnostic tests and the risk of unnecessary anthelmintic usage.

Rehab well and truly under way, thanks to Jackie Taig for helping me whoop my ass into gear! Had to swap horse to pony as not enough strength to get aboard. The lovely Henry came to my rescue. Balance better than expected but ground still moving too much, bit like riding through waves on the beach. I used to event with JT so she knows what I was capable of but today we had a gentle walk and chat around the arena. Baby steps, looking forward to next week already!

Creating a “buzz” with Pro-Equine wound care!

In the era of “Superbugs” and bacteria which seem to be outpacing the production of new and effective antibiotics, the efficacy of natural alternatives is being closely examined. This has also included discovering the medical uses of honey, particularly for wound care.

Manuka honey is at the forefront of natural health sciences, few other natural products compare with the complexity of natural components at work in manuka honey to deliver antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and anti-fungal properties.

Formulated with medical grade Manuka honey, our Aloe Vera and Manuka Gel combo creates an invisible protective barrier. When applied to wounds, it promotes the best environment for healthy skin tissue repair. A particularly good product to use on the challenging lower limb regions to battle common healing problems such as high bacterial counts and excessive wound retraction, due to minimal soft tissue cover and joint movement.

Changes of routine and feed means now is is the best time to stock up on Pro-Equine Colikare! This fast-acting liquid feed supplement is designed to absorb intestinal gas and quickly help a horse feel more comfortable.

Helps reduce gassy build-ups – and tastes good! Ideal for horses prone to a grassy stomach or who react at times of stress. Colikare can be fed daily or only when needed to help disperse uncomfortable gas and relax stomach cramps.

Many horse owners like to give Colikare at times of lush, spring grass or autumn ‘grass flushes’, or when their horse is stressed or has a change of routine, or may have eaten his bedding, wind-sucking and crib-biting.

Catching up with Fiona Herd, our Brand Ambassador who uses Pro-Canine Activgait on both her working Cocker Spaniels.

Fiona who is a doctor at the children’s hospital and does agility and canicross with her two working cocker spaniels, Joey and Ellie in her spare time. Keeping active and also enjoying walking in the countryside, Fiona says, "The dogs have been using Activgait for over a year now, I like that it is a natural product that keeps my dogs feeling good and able to run at their best".

We had a flying visit from Fiona on our stand this year at Defender Blair Atholl International Horse trials, just in time to wish her luck as she headed off to the Scottish Agility dog of the year finals at Kelso.

Thirty-eight of Scotland's top agility dogs and handlers took on a fabulous finals course set by judge, Hannah Wade. There wasn't room for a dog to put a paw wrong and speed was critical as each combination fought hard to be in the winning lineup.
Fiona and Ellie (Belle of Cabrach) did a paw perfect speedy round winning the small Scottish agility dog of the year 2024 and claiming the biggest rosette I've ever seen!

Chorioptic Mange Mites, more commonly known as feather mites live on the surface of the skin and at less than half a millimetre they are not easy to spot! Your horse will show signs of these little critters when they start stamping, chewing and rubbing the lower legs. Although these mites don't bury into the skin they can cause havoc and considerable irritation. No breed is safe but they are much more prevalent in feathered breeds. It's also important to know that mites can live anywhere on the horse, in the stable, grooming equipment and rugs, basically anywhere they can find dead skin debris to feed on!
Symptoms if left untreated include reddening of the skin, crusty scabs - often mistaken for mud fever - hair loss, skin thickening and lower limb swelling, open wounds and secondary fungal or bacterial infections can occur.
Mites absolutely hate Neem Oil! Apply some neem to your finger tips and massage deep into the base of the feather and skin areas. Remember to clean equipment and change bedding.
Pro-Equine Neem Oil range includes sizes starting from 250ml RRP £9.95. The neem spray is also useful for spritzing around the stable and on rugs and equipment.
Finding the right neem product for your horse is easy when you visit our online store. Products include pure cold pressed neem to shampoos, sprays, gels and hoof applications.
