The focus box is such a useful and fun activity to do with your dog. It is an excellent training tool offering multiple behavioural and emotional benefits. By engaging in this activity, dogs can:
➡️ Work on their impulse control: Asking your dog to wait or perform tasks calmly to earn rewards teaches self-discipline and reduces impulsive reactions.
➡️ Improve resilience: Dogs learn to navigate challenges and stay composed under controlled stress, reinforcing their adaptability and coping mechanisms.
➡️ Build focus: Concentrating on the task of earning food through specific behaviours sharpens their ability to engage in a controlled manner.
It’s a brilliant tool for dogs who lack confidence. It allows them to focus on an action (like keeping their head in the box or their nose on an item) while external distractions that might otherwise make them uncomfortable are present.
The focus box isn’t just a feeding routine - it’s a low-stress, highly effective way to nurture emotional balance, mental strength, and behaviour change in dogs. Whether in calm or challenging environments, it provides a foundation for healthier, happier, and more resilient canine companions.

This is your reminder that with Confidence Building Month coming to a close, any activities you do to help build your dog’s confidence don’t need to involve lots of planning! 🐾✨
The lovely Emily with Ivan recently used her environment to encourage Ivan to get some food perched on top of a sign. One second he was complaining that he couldn’t reach, and the next he had launched himself straight up there! 🤣👏
What have you been up to this month to help build your dog’s confidence? 🐕

There has been a lot of discussion recently on Honest Hounds about organic engagement, which is when a dog chooses to connect with you without being given a signal or a command.
Here is a nice little clip from a recent walk where both dogs are offering organic engagement and checking in at regular intervals. I am part of their world and matter to them. If they hear or see something that they are unsure of, they look to me for guidance. For the most part, that guidance is, “there is nothing to worry about, keep moving.” However, it’s important to realise that I don’t give that guidance verbally - I demonstrate it through my body language by remaining calm and continuing on our walk.

Betty arrived for a board & train to work on her stranger issues as well as some dog reactivity and resource guarding around other dogs.
Over the last week I have spent a lot of time getting her endorphins up out and about amongst a pack of dogs as well as ensuring she has had quality downtime in her own separate space, a crate. Just over a week later (and with lots of practice) she is now able to settle in close proximity around another dog whilst eating a chew - she is absolutely smashing it and I am so pleased with how she is coming on!
More updates to come on her journey!

Every month on Honest Hounds we will be focussing on a particular theme to help our members have the best relationship with their dogs. Tomorrow we will be launching a new theme, can you guess what it might be? Comment below if you think you know the answer 👀
HANNAH'S HOUNDS TRAINING FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARY 🎉🎉
🌟 Mantrailing Workshop - Yorkshire 🌟
Mantrailing is a dog sport which uses the natural instincts of the dog to find missing people after taking scent. It's a great way to elevate your relationship with your dog and is very stimulating tuning into the power of your dog's nose. The sport is great for engaging your dogs brain, tiring them out and allowing them to sniff! It's a great way to build confidence in reactive or timid dogs around their triggers and also focuses and slows down dogs that are more excitable.
The session will cover:
🐾 the use of appropriate equipment
🐾 the benefits mantrailing has for you and your dog
🐾 confidence building
🐾 trails that suit you and your dogs needs and abilities
Our affiliate trainers @hannahshoundstraining and @properpaws_dogtraining are hosting a mantrailing workshop during our time in Yorkshire on Sunday 22nd September 9-12. This workshop is suitable for any dog with a nose and can be tailored to suit all behavioural problems. So if you'd like to get involved we'd love to hear from you!!

🌟 DO YOU HAVE BOUNDARIES WITH YOUR DOG FOR AFFECTION 🌟
We love our dogs so much that quite often we don't notice that they've managed to manipulate us on the side. They've come and muzzled in for affection, leant on us or sat all over us on the sofa. We feel needed and as a consequence we don't notice that they're demanding affection and we are freely giving it.
Affection is a really important resource and we should start seeing it as such. If we give it to our dogs for free then it becomes less valuable whereas, if we give it to our dogs when they're doing behaviours we like or that we've asked for then it actually means something. How cool is that? We get to give out affection whilst actually teaching them something 😎
Bear was all about the affection last night and he's been absolutely great since he arrived so I gave him a cuddle but on my terms. When I asked him to get off he did and as a reward I then invited him back. Boundaries can be as simple as that but they make it clear that it's on our terms and not theirs!
Does your dog demand affection? How do you handle it?
🌟 DO YOU STRUGGLE TO TRIM YOUR DOG'S NAILS? 🌟
Shadow in the last few months has started to demonstrate that he is uncomfortable when having his nails trimmed (pulling his paw away, licking my hand that has the clippers in, whining as soon as the clippers touch his nail). So I have been doing some work on it everyday to get him back to where we were previously where he used to sleep through it. I have spent 5 minutes everyday:
🔹 Holding his paw and the clippers against one of his nails, if he doesn't pull away, lick or whine then I reward.
🔹 I have continued to lengthen the amount of time that I have expected from him everyday.
🔹 In the past two sessions, this was all I expected from him but today I ended the session by trimming one of his nails. He barely even noticed as he was used to the game we were playing and was anticipating getting the food reward at the end.
Do you struggle trimming your dog's nails? Why don't you try spending 5 minutes a day helping them work through it. You will be amazed how fast you see results.
