Testing the breaks on this lovely ex-racer. Only 4th time ridden since coming off the track and having a holiday. Bitless riding him was great whilst riding in the paddock but thankfully had a bridle on when going across a field. Video missed the funny bit where I nearly had a flying lesson and will try and get a video next time 🤦‍♀️🤣

Bubba and Rocky enjoying some play time together today. Although Bubba has very different dietary needs to my other good doer boys, especially in the spring/summer, I still want her to have some herd time where she can display natural behaviours, run, play, groom and communicate. Grooming over a fence isn’t enough and I really notice a difference in her schooling and focus once she’s had play time with others. Maybe we need another TB type to come and pair up with her 🤔

Anxious and nappy horses!!
The biggest struggle for owners I’m usually called to is a horse with separation anxiety, those who nap, won’t hack alone, leave their field buddies or even walk onto the yard on their own. People just don’t know how to help their horse come away from others and feel ok.
The behaviours your horse shows when being separated isn’t them being difficult, it’s them feeling fear. It’s not natural for them to leave others and be alone so behaviours you see is your horse being scared. At this point, we have to truly understand what the horse is going through as training at this point is difficult - a frightened horse can’t learn as what we try and teach them doesn’t sink in.
Ignoring their fear and training them in way that doesn’t understand their behaviour, only reinforces that ‘thing is frightening’, and the situation gets worse. So how do we overcome this? Training starts with ensuring your horse remains within the ‘learning zone’ and working with the horse before they are anxious and can no longer focus on you.
This is often why customers say to me ‘my horse isn’t doing it with you’. This is because I’m working within their learning zone and understanding their behaviour before tension arises. I don’t want the owner to show me the anxious horse for me to see his level of ‘scared’, just so I can fix the problem. I want the owner to see the calm horse and how I’m teaching him to be confident and trusting me everything is ok. This can only be done by avoiding the anxiety and preventing the horse going into his fear zone. Then we can make a difference.

Well said! If your horse gets pushy or bites for food you need to think about what you’re doing wrong. Positive reinforcement with food rewards, can help change behaviour and is a reinforcer for teaching your horse anything from riding certain moves under saddle, trick training or dealing with behavioural issues 🥰
