Please be careful with the temperatures into next week with your dogs! During warmer weather, we either offer shady, slower and shorter walks potentionally with some water to swim in or we stay at home with your pet as an alternative to walking. During this time your dog will be stimulated in other ways such as playing games. This will keep their body temperature regulated and reduce the risk of heat stroke! Heat stroke for dogs can be fatal- Even with temperatures in the low 20's for particular breeds!
πΎ HOT WEATHER POLICY βοΈ
It looks like we might finally be coming into the time of year when the weather starts heating up! As we have several new clients this year, we wanted to remind you of our policies for hot weather.
As dogs cool themselves down by panting and can only sweat through their paws, when the weather is hot, not only can they risk burning their paws on hot pavements, but they are also susceptible to heatstroke.
With this in mind, we keep a close eye on the temperature when deciding whether to walk dogs when the weather gets hotter. We also take into consideration a whole load of other factors such as the dog's breed, age, size, whether there is shade or water for swimming, and anything owners have said with how their dogs respond to the heat. We will assess each dog individually.
When the weather is warmer, if we do walks, we will be tailoring them to suit the weather conditions, encouraging slower, sniffly walks in shady places rather than crazy ball chasing walks!
If we feel it is too hot for a walk, for owners who are out when we would normally walk your dogs, we will be offering home/garden visits as an alternative, providing your dogs with enrichment games and mental stimulation instead.
We may decide it is necessary to shorten our walks or walk earlier, and in some cases we may have to do shorter home/garden visits to ensure we can still accommodate for all - especially around our busy lunchtime period.
πΎ The health and safety of the dogs we care for is the most important thing to us, and we're not willing to put dogs at risk by walking them when it's too hot. If you have any concerns about your dogs in hot weather, please let us know and we can discuss alternative arrangements to suit you and your dogs πΎ
Keep an eye on our page as we will be posting lots of tips and advice during the summer months, not only for dogs but also cats and small pets too.
We have also put together an enrichment guide for anyone who is looking for alternative activities for their dogs when the weather is too hot for walking. These activities focus on mental stimulation as opposed to physical exercise. If you would like a copy of this, please let us know.
We hope you have a lovely summer, and take care in the heat! βοΈπΎ
