I had the pleasure of starting a day training course with Myrtle the springer this week. I'll be taking Myrtle out to help with her training alongside the hard work her mum is putting in, to help Myrtle feel more comfortable around other dogs. Myrtle has a complicated history and we've been working together for several months to try and help her in various areas. She's doing so well as you can see by how relaxed she is out and about. We had a wander and sniff, did some behaviour modification work, practiced her cues, and she got to have a game of find the ball too- her favourite! All this alongside some work at home too, we both enjoyed the session! Well done Myrtle πŸ‘ 😍

Inke, the black Buhund, had a recent behaviour consultation to help her with her reaction to visitors to the house and her prey drive on walks. She did very well in the session and I look forward to helping her further with another session out and about. In the photo shes practicing her settle on a bed even when visitors (me!) move around. Well done Inke (and her sister Puca who was desperate to join in 🀩!).

Here's some lovely work from our recent classes- the dogs have been working on their manners and life skills- like not barging through doors, not jumping up for greetings, walking calmly past distractions, and settling in a busy environment. They've all done so well ❀️

We'll be holding our next Grouchy Grumps workshop at Barkers Paddock in Whitchurch in a week's time. I love these workshops, where I invite my behaviour clients with reactive dogs together to help each other with training exercises. It's a very supportive class, and look at the space we have to work with πŸ‘πŸ˜

I had a great day at the PACT dogX conference this past Sunday. The speaker line up was great with some informative talks on problem solving in the training industry. I got to catch up with friends and colleagues from over the years too!

We've been so pleased to hold our training classes at Barkers Paddock in Whitchurch recently. Such a great environment to fine tune the great skills the dogs have been learning. This lovely video shows Dexter the lab (hes only 14mths old) practicing his steady lead walking past the other exciting dogs. I love how you can see each dog he passes has a look at him but continues to remain calm, steady and focused on their owner, who have asked them to sit and wait. And how Dexters lead stays nice and loose. All done with patience and kindness. What lovely work everyone πŸ‘

I find these guys fascinating, street dogs. They're a window into early domestication of the dog. They show how dogs lived and behaved, alongside us humans, before we intervened more to create specific breeds who perform particular jobs, or just to look a certain way to win a rosette. I'm home from a wonderful trip to Thailand and again found that I could spend hours watching them interact, together and with people and other animals. Whilst I'm sure many have a tough life, the ones we met were very steady and calm, and could clearly communicate with each other effectively. I'm lucky to share my house with an ex street dog and find her very similar- her main motivations are to scavenge food (not hunt), and find somewhere comfy to sleep!
Aren't they great!

Such sad news. Having worked at Battersea and in rescue for many years,
his loss will be felt. I hope he's catching up with old friends at Rainbow Bridge.

Battersea joins the nation in mourning the loss of Paul O’Grady - an entertainment legend and much-loved Ambassador to our charity. We’d like to extend our deepest sympathies to Paul’s family and friends. To millions Paul O’Grady is the popular TV and radio presenter and comedian who lit up their screens with his razor-sharp humour and perpetual generosity and warmth. Battersea will forever remember Paul as a devoted animal lover with the biggest heart, who fell in love with every dog he met at our centres. Paul will always be associated with Battersea, and we are truly saddened to have lost such a true friend and huge part of our charity.
