Eye Right Referrals has just invested in a state of the art ERG machine the Retivet. This machine easily allows us to measure retinal function. This can help determine the cause of blindness in your dog or cat.

We can perform ERG in all our clinics with this highly portable device, bringing high tech retinal diagnostics to Dunfermline, Dundee, Edinburgh, Stirling, Perth, and Anstruther.

Welcome to Eye Right Referrals Ruth! Ruth is our new admin assistant and will be dealing with Referral bookings.

Ruth had a career of serving in the WRNS and working for a national charity, and finished with some good years in a veterinary practice. Since retiring, Leo (German Spitz, age 9) and Ruth get to have lovely walks, bake delicious cakes, and see her five grandchildren.

It’s been just over 6 months since Eye Right Referrals (ERR) was launched so we thought we would catch up with its founder, Julia Henken, to find out how things are going.
Julia is an Advanced Practitioner and certificate holder in Veterinary
Ophthalmology. She qualified as a veterinary surgeon in 2011 and has worked exclusively as an Ophthalmologist for the last 7 years in Fife. In March 2024, she began Eye Right Referrals, an independent veterinary ophthalmology referral service for small animals in central Scotland.
Julia works from 6 host practices: Hill City Vets (Edinburgh), Broadleys Veterinary Hospital (Stirling), Thrums Vets (Scone), Parkside Veterinary Group (Dundee), Inglis Vets (Dunfermline) and East Neuk Veterinary Clinic (St Monans).
A range of ophthalmology services are provided, from complex medical cases to intra-ocular procedures including cataract surgery. The price list is available via the website (link), as Julia aims to be transparent with her competitive pricing and ensure clients are fully aware of all costs prior to procedures and appointments.
Like many start-ups, Julia has so far been responsible for all aspects of the business, but she has just recruited an experienced veterinary administrator- Ruth Smith, to help manage patient bookings and provide admin support.

A bit of free time will allow Julia to focus on further ERR developments and on her favourite hobby and side-hustle- Henkens Hives, small batch raw honey production!

Happy cat after a sequestrum removal and Conjunctival graft 4 weeks after surgery.

Sequestra are black scab-like patches that can form on the cornea and require removal. A graft like this will stop them from coming back.

Thankyou to Prescott's for delivering another two microscopes to us. This means I am now able to perform advanced corneal procedures in all of the 6 clinics I attend.

I already have 3 keratectomy procedures booked in next week so even more dogs and cats can get their eyes sorted without having to travel as far to get these big surgeries done.

Broadleys Veterinary Hospital , Thrums Vets and East Neuk Veterinary Clinic are the clinics where the new microscopes will be put to good use. Adding to Inglis Vets , Hill City Vets and Parkside Veterinary Group will full ophthalmic surgery set-up.

I get asked a lot by clients what a diamond burr is. Well, here it is!
This dog has a non-healing ulcer, called a SCCED. This happens when the healing of an Ulcer goes wrong and the top layer doesn't stick down to the bottom layer properly. These can go on for months without this procedure.

The green colour is due to a dye that we use to highlight the ulcer.

The burr is a tiny spinning metal ball with very tiny indents. It gently rubs away all the loose cornea, gets everything back to healthy tissue so healing can start again in a healthier way.

Combined with a bandage contact lens and a little eyelid stitch to partially close the eyelids during healing, this has an 85% success rate first time round.

This is one of the most common procedures that we do at Eye Right Referrals

NEWS: Veterinary opthalmology is 'Eye Right'

Julia Henken has come a long way since qualifying as a veterinary surgeon in 2011. She has now launched her fully independent Eye Right Referrals service for small animal eye care after becoming an advanced practitioner in Veterinary Ophthalmology and working exclusively as an ophthalmologist for the last six years. Based in Dalgety Bay, Julia works out of six clinics across Fife and beyond, as she is one of the very few specialists within Scotland.

She adores all her canine and feline patients and will always go over and above to save their eyes and improve their lives. Loving every aspect of Veterinary Ophthalmology but Julia especially enjoys creating beautiful cosmetic and functional eyelids for animals with eyelid problems and giving dogs their sight back with life changing cataract surgery. She prides herself in achieving excellent success rates in cherry eye surgery with a technique she has perfected over the years.

Julia explained, “I aim to make the referral process simple and time efficient for referring vets so that they don’t hesitate to refer to anyone other than Eye Right Referrals. Time is precious to general practitioners, and a simple referral process will give us an edge on our competitors, where the referral process can often seem confusing and time-consuming. I also believe in making the pricing as competitive as possible.”

Julia reached out to Business Gateway Fife and she has received a range of business advice and support from business adviser, Karen Cassells who commented:

“I was delighted to assist Julia with her business model, business plan, cashflow and funding as she started out. We were able to help secure her a Start Up grant and Fife Investment Fund loan for a cataract machine and other equipment. We will continue to work with Julia as the business progresses, particularly around development of her website. She has already built up an excellent reputation in her field.”

Many squash-nose dogs (brachycephalics) especially French Bulldogs and Pugs, have problems with their eyelids. The lower eyelid nearest the nose can often roll inwards, causing hairs to rub on their eye, or sometimes the eyelids are too big and the eye can be damaged as it is too exposed. Sometimes the only symptoms are ulcers that keep coming back, or pigment developing on their eyes.

This procedure is a medial canthoplasty and is an all-in-one procedure that fixes the above problems. It lasts for a lifetime and can prevent problems in the future. Chat to your vet about referral to us if you think your dog might be affected.
