Tethera vets is proud to work with farmers - it’s at the heart of what we do. Today we stand in solidarity with them as they protest at Westminster. For those reading this who are not connected to the farming industry, the budget announced earlier this month threatens to be the straw that breaks the camels back. As an example, in the last year the number of dairy farms in the UK declined by 5.8% (source- https://ahdb.org.uk/dairy/GB-producer-numbers). As a nation we have to decide If we want to continue to produce food in the UK and if we do then we have to find ways to work with and support our farmers.

With the unavailability of enzootic abortion vaccine for sheep this year, we are following the guidelines issued to us by the sheep vet society as outlined below. Please contact the practice for advice regarding your own individual flock and situation and it is essential to contact us in the first instance of any abortions or problems.

Toxovax is still available and unaffected.

Summary of the sheep vet guidelines

- when faced with an aborting ewe it is important to isolate from the rest of the flock and that samples are taken to diagnose the abortion agent

- it is not appropriate to use prophylactic antibiotics to control abortion- the use of antibiotics must be targeted and used in late pregnancy only in the face of an outbreak or in a group where a confirmed diagnosis has been made in the preceding year.

For flocks that are regularly vaccinated against enzootic abortion there will be a small cohort of unvaccinated replacements but the risk to them is low if the remainder of the flock is protected. They should be marked and vaccinated next year when they are not pregnant.

For flocks that are at high risk of disease there are a couple of options

- there is an inactivated vaccine (inmeva) two doses are required with the second at least three weeks before tupping and a further booster is required within a year

- unvaccinated ewes at high risk with confirmed diagnosis can have a single injection of oxytetracycline between day 96 and 126 of pregnancy.

Nematodirus Alert!

If you have lambs old enough to be grazing, using ground used by ewes and lambs last year, Nematodirus could have a significant impact on your flock leading to diarrhoea, stunted growth and mortality.

The immature larvae cause the damage so we treat based on risk rather than egg counts for this worm, as very few eggs will be produced when the Nematodirus larvae are causing damage. Using forecasts from SCOPS and field grazing histories we can decide if treatment for the group is needed. White wormer is recommended when risk is high, for all lambs in the group, risk factors include:

• Scops forecast map (https://www.scops.org.uk/forecasts/nematodirus-forecast/)
• Cold weather followed by 10 days of warmer weather (>10oC.)
• Lambs old enough to be eating grass.
• Lambs under stress e.g. pet lambs, triplets on ewes.
• Lambs grazed on the same field the year before.

Please get in touch with the practice if you would like to discuss further on 017683 51819.

Orf in Sheep – late availability of Scabigard® vaccine.
With challenges in the supply of Orf vaccine for the last two years some farms with a history of Orf may have missed vaccination. As the virus can persist for years on infected farms it’s wise to vaccinate at risk lambs if possible. Speak to your vet about latest Scabigard® availability and for more information about controlling Orf go to https://www2.zoetis.co.uk/content/_assets/PDF/MM_22119_Scabigard_A5_leaflet_PAGE_PRINT_83B6PF.pdf.
