Just two of the five dogs that attended the ridden obedience training session yesterday at Bedgbury. Both these dogs worked beautifully with their owners in the arena at the same time. More sessions coming soon.

Some very tired dogs after the first training day. No surprise when you know just how much we covered!
All the dogs learning how to stop when running in a direction AWAY from their handlers. The time when you are most likely to need it.
Everyone managed to carry a cup full of water in their lead hand barely spilling a drop.
One adorable 9 year old lurcher begins to retrieve for the first time in his life. Exciting stuff!

One of the most useful behaviours when out hacking with our dogs, and one that is tested frequently at a very high level in competition is the “Stay”.

When teaching stays I build them paying attention to three separate contributing aspects which helpfully all start with the same letter!

1. DISTANCE
2. DURATION
3. DISTRACTION

When hacking out with your dog and you require it to stay in a specific area you may be a considerable DISTANCE away. Perhaps asking him/her to stay for a long DURATION while you navigate a particularly awkward gate. You are constantly moving-DISTRACTION- and often away from your dog-which is the hardest time for them to comply with you. This requires obedience at a very high level!

Practice stays on the ground first. Using a mounting block to stand on can help you emulate being on a horse, gradually building up the DISTANCE away from you and the DURATION of the stay.

When you practice be mindful of only increasing one aspect at a time.
If you are going to increase the DURATION of the stay, have the dog at the same or less DISTANCE than you have been practising previously and don’t include DISTRACTIONS.
At first stays are best practiced when the dog is tired at the end of a ride perhaps incorporating it into the routine as you dismount.
Keeping notes can be helpful.
Stay is an important exercise that can keep your dog safe.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Alison Wright and I live in Sussex with my two Road and Carriage Dogs, and more often than not, a visiting whippet.

I am passionate about dogs accomplishing what they were bred to do, or having a “job”.
I am a qualified international Road & Carriage Dog trainer, and founded the Road & Carriage Dog trials in the UK in 2003.
Since then, I have organised, competed, judged or made a nuisance of myself at virtually all the trials.

If you are interested in starting your dog (any breed) to work with horses-hacking out, competiting, or even just horse proofing your dog, do drop me a message.
Likewise if you have a Dalmatian you want to introduce to carriage work.
