As you know, things have been very difficult this past year here at Eccles Hedgehogs and due to a family bereavement, we have been on a break.

Numerous circumstances have changed, many of which are totally out of our control. After a long hard think, it has been concluded that reopening our part of the hedgehog rescue in the future is just not going to be viable. This is a decision that has not come lightly with a lot of torn up feelings and guilt.

We have rescued and rehabbed literally hundreds of hedgehogs since we opened which could not have been done without your amazing support so thank you to everyone one of you.

Our volunteer Jenna will continue to take in a small amount of hedgehogs directly via vets and we will remain as a collection point for your supplies for both Jenna and our colleagues in Strood.

This way we can still do our small part in helping to save hedgehogs in the future. Supplies can be left in the usual collection box by the front door.

All that remains is for me to wish you all a very merry Christmas.

Regards

Philippa, Heather and Emily

Just to give you a heads up, due to bereavement leave, Eccles Hedgehogs won't be taking any more hedgehogs for the rest of the year. We still have 4 under our care who are currently with volunteer Jenna.

It is reasonably calm here at Eccles at the moment with just 3 hogs in pens, 2 in the shed and 4 with our volunteer Jenna. We are however getting a little low on dry cat/kitten food and meat in jelly pouches/tins. Your help always appreciated.

More hedgehogs have gone to their release sites. Bye bye and good luck.

Apologies for lack of updates in recent weeks. This is due to a family bereavement.

We have had quite a few comings and goings. Welcome back Harrogate, Shibden (pictured) and Whiskey who have all returned from volunteers to finish fattening up before final release.

Our new additions Featherstone, Appleton, Cowling and Bursea are all doing well so far. York is still with us in the shed too. Adel and Bolton have gone to our volunteer Jenna's for some more intensive top up feeds.

In the pen we currently have Friendley, Ossett, Coley, Otley, Thornton, Vodka, Burley and Agglethorpe.

Brook and Pine are at release weight and will be on their way to release sites shortly.

We have new admissions. Meet Cowling, one of the newbies admitted. He was covered in flies eggs and underweight. He is being helped along with additional top up feeding but we are really low on Royal Canin Puppy Dog Milk. Any contribution gratefully received.

This morning, I have been revamping one of the pens. Rats had made it unusable by digging their way in, pushing up slabs and making tunnels big enough for hedgehogs to escape. Whilst the problem is temporarily sorted out, we wonder if there are any amazing people out there willing to concrete the area to alleviate the chance of rats making a return permanently? Is there anyone willing to help?

A Huge THANK YOU to Hattie who made dog biscuits which she sold (with the help of little brother) to raise an amazing £100 for the hedgehogs. Some of this money will be used to replenish our supplies of puppy dog mousse of which we are getting dangerously low. Well done Hattie! You are a star!

Poor Whitby has had a really rough time of things and has had an over burden or parasites despite being so little. Fingers crossed that now she has got her appetite back, she will pick up quickly.

I AM FUMING! PLEASE DO NOT DUMP HEDGEHOGS ON MY DOORSTEP. PHONE FIRST!

I am currently in Eastbourne at my mum's bedside where she is dying and some idiot has put a box containing a hedgehog on the doorstep which my husband just found on his way in from work. I have been out the house since 9.30 and know nothing about this hedgehog. This is why I ask you to ring first! It could have been there all day for all I know!

More good news. We have been able to release some of our hedgehogs including Dewsbury.

Dewsbury came to us via the wonderful Newnham Court Vets after having fly strike on a facial injury. After a few set backs with parasites, he adjusted to having one eye and has been gaining weight and strength. As you can see, he looks like he has been through the wars.

After having endured so much, he spent a few days in our enclosed safe area with a blind hedgehog to ensure he can cope before eventually being discharged last night.

Good luck Dewsbury and enjoy your freedom which is well deserved.

We are now down to the last two or three days supply of cat meat. Can anyone help? Our young hedgehogs like Ossett in the picture are eating at least one sachet each evening. We have over 30 hedgehogs in residence. That is a lot of sachets! I hate to ask again but without help, we just cannot afford to save the lives if these little ones!

Guess what lovely people? Our stock if cat/kitten meat is running low again. Any contribution is amazing.

The first of this year's babies has got first place and Barden has reached released target weight! He is ready for release. Close behind him are Farrow in second position and Sowerby in third. Another few days and they will pass the finish line.

We need to update this year's release site list. If you live outside Eccles and can fulfil a strict criteria (pm for the criteria), would you like to be considered as a potential release site?

Stanbury has now been with us since 10th July and has battled with parasites. Finally she is gaining weight and looking much healthier. She was admitted with one back leg missing but so far has managed well. Another few days and she will be tested in a pen to make sure she can fend for herself.

Another orphan to be handreared arrived on Sunday. Baby is doing very well considering there are some signs of bruises. It is holding it's weight well. Handrearers are hard work and time consuming. They need feeding every 2 to 3 hours and it can be a slow business. We are looking for a mature volunteer who doesn't work (or sleep) that is willing to hand rear. Babies need to be kept in quiet calm conditions with no excess noise such as children, other animals or TV type noise. Please pm if you are interested.
