Hey everyone! ππ
Hope you have all had a nice relaxing weekend?
Thought I would share this video of Rooster having a bit of exploration time to 'stretch his legs' so to speak lol π
I made the 'hills' and creases in the bed deliberately. I've found that putting them on a completely smooth/clear bed does make them freak out a little bit and feel exposed if they aren't the most confident snake. So this enables them to feel slightly hidden behind each hill and gives them a bit more interest in wanting to see what's over it! π
You can see how quickly Roosters tongue is flicking, meaning he is trying to get as much information about his environment as quickly as possible. Long tongue flicks are his way of getting as much info at any one time aswell. You can also see where he changes to quick short tongue flicks when he finds a particular area of interest! π they usually do this in food mode or breeding mode aswell or when they smell another hognose. The shorter tongue flicks I translate as excitement/interest. You can even see the little head tilt which I think is them trying to process the information, kind of like a puppy does when they are trying to understand your commands! π
It's very fascinating to watch!
Hope you all enjoy watching him as much as i did π
Boys! π
Boys do tend to be the most dramatic hognoses, especially when it comes to feeding time!
This boy Chester is one of the biggest drama noodles we have. He has eaten off the tongs maybe 5 times in his lifetime! We still like to try every now and then just incase he changes his mind....
He says 'no thankyou' πππ
Apologies for the camera angle!

Hognose feeding time
Slow motion video of Storm taking her mouse. Safe to say this girl has always loved her food.
Finally uploading some video and pictures captured at the IHS Doncaster show in Sept 2021. This was not even half of what was there but as it was out first time going with the whole family, we were too busy looking around ourselves and taking it all in! Lol π
We will try to capture some more pictures and video at the next show in November π
Hope you like it π

Tongue flick observations part 2!
This is Storm. She loves her food and as you can see she is in full 'food mode' lol π
It doesn't matter if she's fed the day before, she is always very food orientated and will always act like this with the jerky, excited body language. Notice her tongue flicks are very short and quick! She is ready to pounce as soon as she gets a whiff of a mouse! Lol
This is the instance where you need them to recognise that you aren't feeding them and you definitely don't want to just stick your hand in to handle them as they will just launch for it without a second thought!
With the tongue flicks being short, they really aren't taking in much information there, and even looking at a hand won't deter them, when they are in that frame of mind, they are just going to take their chances and hope that it is food!
I've worked with this girl since we got her from a hatchling and she has actually bitten me twice, but as you can see by the end of the video, she does start to realise that food isn't coming and she does a couple of longer tongue flicks. I would usually try to touch her if I can or just give her this moment to realise and then try to pick up for handling.
This is a prime example where you will get bitten by a hognose, so don't mistake this for happy behaviour because they want to see you and go straight in. There needs to be a clear signal/response or something that is done differently to feed day that they can learn and recognise, so they can snap out of that mode.
I hope this video is helpful and if you would like to see more please like or comment π
p.s. please excuse her enclosure..no one said hognoses were tidy! π€£π
Just having a conversation today about tongue flicks and how to recognise what 'mode' your snake is in, so I went looking for videos and thought I would share this one.
This is Foxy, as you can see she is feeling a bit defensive. Apart from giving me the side eye π π she is doing long but frequent tongue flicks. This means she is feeling a bit defensive, nervous, not too sure whats going on, so she's trying to get as much information about her environment as possible.
They take in information in the form of smells with their tongue and take them back in where their jacobsons organ will tell them about their environment. So the more tongue they hang out, the more smells/information they can take back in and make sense of. This is typically what you will see when your snake is unsure, nervous, defensive or anything along those lines.
I will post other videos to show different behaviours and tongue flicks if it's of interest to anyone. Please like the post and leave a comment if you found this helpful π

She isn't really lonely..this is her best 'Oliver' impression! Lol but doesn't she make you feel sorry for her?! ππ©β€
Progress with Oreo
So I thought I would share this feeding video with Oreo. This girl has been sassy and defensive ever since we got her. She loves her food but would never eat from the tongs and would always hiss and bluff strike, even now, when you try to feed her or handle her or any other kind of interaction. She is also a serial musker! It's very rare to handle this girl without getting covered in some foul smelling stuff lol π
We figured this out early on and our feeding technique was to just leave it inside a toilet roll tube (a good go to method for defensive/shy ones) and she would eventually take it when she felt she could. She does have a good appetite, so lucky for us we never had a problem with this and have fed her in pretty much the same way since we got her in the summer.
Every now and then I would try and tong feed her to see if she would take it and she would show signs of being interested but never enough to take it. Of course she still had the same attitude!
In the past couple of weeks things have changed! π
She was in her humid hide (a jar of moss in her tub) at feeding time and as she was buried in quite deep i just offered the mouse to the entrance of the jar and to my amazement she came and took it!! The next couple of feeds have gone almost the same and now we are at the point in this video.
As you can see she is still weary and defensive but has now got used to me and the tongs more and now takes from the tongs in the open! Yes she still is a bit unsure but I wanted to share this video just to show that with a bit of patience and routine, they will learn and eventually get used to feeding more comfortably π
We are still taking baby steps with handling and getting over the musking, but progress is progress!
I apologise for the dodgy camera work and noise, filming with one hand and feeding with the other was a bit tricky! Also there is a cricket in the gecko enclosure that is obviously bragging that he's still alive! π€£
I hope this helps anyone t
