Phileo Equine - UK & Ireland Our products harness the power of microbes to support digestive & immune function in horses & ponies. The Equine Microbiome - More than just gut health!

As the engine room, the hindgut microbiome is irreversibly linked to the overall health and welfare of all equines. To ensure optimum health and performance, we must support the microbial community within the hindgut. At Phileo by Lesaffre, we harness the power of microbes to support this engine room, which in turn supports digestive function, immunity, performance, fertility and welfare in all ag

es and performance levels of equines. No added chemicals, no magic powder, no unsubstantiated claims. Just microbiology at its best. Phileo by Lesaffre is the pioneering animal nutrition division of Lesaffre, a global leader in yeast and fermentation. We create baker’s yeast based feed additives that improve the gut health and performance of wide range of animals, including farm animals, pets and – of course – horses and ponies. Our expertise is built on a foundation of nearly 170 years of research and manufacturing, enabling us to get the best out of the microbiological world for the benefit of your horse. On the cutting edge of innovation, Phileo by Lesaffre has R&D divisions in Europe, North America and Asia, and our veterinarians and animal nutritionists work closely with our wider research teams.

The gut-brain axis is more than an abstract scientific concept… it’s a vital (and very real!) communication network that influences equine performance, behaviour and wellness.

🔬 From neurotransmitter production to immune function and inflammation control, the hindgut microbiome is central to both physical and mental health.

DID YOU KNOW: The horse’s gut and brain are in constant conversation, impacting a huge range of systems in their body – from immunity to digestion to behaviour.

This system is called the Gut-Brain Axis.

When the gut microbiome is balanced the system works well, meaning horses are calmer, more focused and better able to cope with stress. But when that balance is disrupted, it can affect behaviour, performance and even result in health conditions like colic or laminitis.

⚠️ Not all yeasts are equal!

There’s increasing awareness of how yeast can support the equine digestive system. But with many types of yeast, species and strains on the market, it's important to understand that they don't all work in the same way or deliver the same results.

✅ Strain
✅ Stability
✅ Dose

These three factors are critical, and our flagship product Actisaf® Sc 47 live yeast probiotic is a patented, research-backed specific strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-4407, selected for its proven effectiveness and stability in the equine gut.

To determine if your feed or supplement contains Actisaf®, look for the specific strain numbers “CNCM I-4407” or “NCYC Sc 47” on the label. However, just because the product claims to contain Actisaf, it does not confirm that Phileo’s recommended feeding rates are being used. If recommended feeding rates are not being used, your horse will not be benefiting from the optimal results seen in trial work with Actisaf®.

For more information on inclusion rates within certain feeds/supplements, you can contact us directly using the details on our website: phileoequine.com

📣 Not all yeasts are created equal...

There is a lot of talk in the equine world about the benefits of "yeast" or probiotics for the gut health and microbiome of horses. But did you know that there are many different types of yeast?

Yeasts are single cell organisms and are commonly used in commercial equine feeds or supplements. Within the market, there are several types or strains of yeasts used as feed ingredients, however there are key differences between them and how they interact with the horse’s digestive system...

The strain, stability and dose rate is critical in determining the effectiveness of a yeast product. Our flagship product Actisaf® Sc47 is a patented, probiotic strain of live yeast of the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae and has been rigorously researched and tested for effectiveness and stability.

Much of the horse’s bodily functions like performance, behaviour and immunity are impacted by their hindgut, which includes their caecum and their colon. This section of their digestive system is home to trillions of microbes that supply their power, health and nutrition.

The effectiveness of Actisaf® live yeast probiotic (or any yeast-based feed additive!) largely depends on the strain of yeast and the rate at which you feed it. If your horse or pony doesn’t receive enough Actisaf® every day, you are not likely to see any effect.

Phileo recommends feeding at least 10g per day as a base, and perhaps more if the horse or pony is experiencing increased stress (e.g. change in routine, additional time stabled, spring grass or in rigorous training).

Actisaf® must be fed via a commercial feed or supplement, so if you want to know how much your horse will receive per day you can contact the manufacturer directly.

📣 NOT ALL YEASTS ARE THE SAME! 📣

Yeast has become a bit of a buzzword these days, and the term encompasses a huge range of products with varying modes of action and levels of effectiveness. From brewer’s yeast to probiotics, you might think these are ‘much of muchness’ but that is not the case.

No other yeast on the market has the same impact as Actisaf® Sc47 live yeast probiotic. Like many live yeasts on the market, Actisaf® comes from a species of yeast called Saccharomyces cerevisiae BUT is a specific strain that is unique to us. Its patented structure also protects the precious live yeast cells and ensure they survive the feed manufacturing process and make it to the hindgut intact and ready to do their job.

Be sure to ask for Actisaf® by name when speaking to your feed or supplement manufacturer because not all yeasts are created equal 💪

❄️ As we move through the changing seasons, it’s important to remember the significant impact these transitions can have on your horse’s gut health. Seasonal shifts, particularly in temperature, forage availability, and feeding routines, can cause stress and disrupt the delicate balance of the equine hindgut microbiome.

Learn more about this imbalance, known as hindgut dysbiosis, in our latest blog post ⤵️

As we transition from autumn to winter, our equines can experience a wide range of physical, metabolic and mental challenges that can cause microbial stress within their hindgut microbiome.
